WORD OF THE DAY: Conquest.

But as we pivot into the Book of Judges, the tone shifts from the celebration of the Promised Land to a much heavier reality.

Michelle pointed out a significant “weak link” as we start this book: the lack of a centralized successor. While Joshua empowered families to lead their own households, the nation as a whole began to drift without a Moses or Joshua at the helm. It didn’t take long for the “Yes, we will serve the Lord!” of the previous generation to turn into “Let’s see what the neighbors are doing.”

A conquest is anything acquired by conquering a territory or people. However, in Judges, we see three stages: the initial conquest, the incomplete conquest (where tribes failed to drive out the inhabitants), and finally, the failed conquest (where the Israelites ended up being conquered by the very people they were supposed to remove).

If you ever think the Word of God is dry, just look at the story of Ehud. It’s a gritty, cinematic tale involving a hidden dagger, a very large king named Eglon, and a daring escape through a latrine. But beneath the shock value is a deeper truth: God uses ordinary, flawed people to deliver His children when they finally cry out in repentance.

It’s easy to judge the Israelites for their constant backsliding, but Tricia reminded us that we are often just like them. We start the day with bold intentions, only to get distracted by worries or “thorns” by noon. The good news? God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on our perfection. He is long-suffering and always ready to raise up a deliverer when we turn our hearts back to Him.

Father, thank You for Your incredible patience with us. We confess that we often get distracted and fall into the same cycles as the Israelites. Help us to have a complete conquest over our doubts and fears today. May Your Spirit give us the victory we cannot achieve on our own. Amen.

TODAY’S READING: Joshua 22–24.

WORD OF THE DAY: Homeland.

We’ve reached the end of Joshua, and it truly feels like the end of an era. After years of battle and settling the land, Joshua gathered the tribes one last time to remind them of where they came from—and where they were going.

Before the tribes headed to their respective territories, a major misunderstanding nearly led to a civil war. The eastern tribes built a massive altar, and the western tribes assumed it was for idol worship. It turns out, it was a “witness” to ensure they would never be forgotten by their brothers. It’s a reminder that even among people with good intentions, communication is the key to unity.

A homeland is a native land, a place set aside for a people of a particular origin. For the Israelites, this was the inheritance God promised back in Genesis. It became their place of comfort and identity because it was the land God had “explored for them” (Ezekiel 20:6).

Michelle noticed something interesting: Joshua didn’t name a new “Moses” or “Joshua” to lead the nation. Instead, he called every man and woman to lead their own families. By stating, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord,” he set the standard for a family culture rooted in faith.

Tricia shared how this looks in her own home—from dinner table conversations about God’s work to the physical act of filling their large home with those who need care. Leading our families doesn’t require a pulpit; it requires modeling Christlike behavior, prioritizing prayer, and making decisions that align with God’s teachings in the “messy” parts of daily life.

WORD OF THE DAY: Fulfilled.

Imagine watching a promise unfold over 45 years—or even 400 years if you go back to Abraham. Today, we finally see the moment where the “dream” of the Promised Land becomes a reality.

Michelle raised a great point today: when the fighting stopped, the work didn’t. These cities were conquered, which means there was a lot of cleanup and “unpacking” to do. Yet, in the middle of the transition, the Bible says God gave them rest. It’s a beautiful reminder that God can provide peace in our hearts even when our “territory” still requires some hard work and restoration.

To fulfill is to succeed in achieving something or making a dream come true. From Genesis to Joshua, we see a chain of promises—nationhood, protection, presence, and victory. Tricia pointed out that while we often let seeds of doubt grow in our hearts, God’s track record is perfect. He doesn’t just promise; He acts.

We see the Cities of Refuge established—havens of mercy for the overwhelmed. We also see the Levites scattered into 48 towns. God didn’t want His people to have to travel far to find mercy or to find a reminder of His Law. He placed His grace right in the middle of their daily lives.

As we look into the New Testament later this year, we’ll see this theme continue. Jesus came to fulfill the greatest promise of all. Our ultimate inheritance isn’t just a piece of property; it’s a permanent home with Him. Because God is always true to His word, we can be bold and courageous in whatever we face today—from a crying baby to a difficult workplace.

Have you ever wondered if it’s finally “your turn”? After generations of hearing about a land flowing with milk and honey, the Israelites are finally seeing the map divided into real, tangible homes.

Dividing land for hundreds of thousands of people is no small feat. Tricia compared it to cutting a cake or a pie—everyone is watching to see if the pieces are equal! But Joshua wasn’t just concerned with “fairness” in a mathematical sense; he was ensuring that everyone had exactly what they needed to fulfill God’s calling on their lives.

It is the amount of something allocated to a particular person. While human allotments often have limits (like that missing cheeseburger in the drive-thru bag!), the allotment we receive in God is limitless. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, yet He cares about the specific boundaries of your life today.

One of the most moving parts of today’s reading is seeing Joshua—the commander of the army—receive his portion last. He didn’t use his authority to grab the best land for himself. Instead, he served the people first. This is the heart of leadership: prioritizing relationships and serving others rather than seeking control. When we lead like Joshua, we create a healthy community where everyone is cared for.

Michelle reminded us that God has always provided the “perfect allotment.” In the wilderness, it was the exact amount of Manna needed for the day. In the Promised Land, it was the specific cities and hills. Today, your “allotment” of time, energy, and resources is exactly what God knows you need. It is enough.

WORD OF THE DAY: Territory.

Have you ever felt like you were “in the weeds” of life? Today, we find ourselves in the geographical weeds of Joshua, tracing the boundary lines of the tribes of Israel.

For the Israelites, these lists weren’t boring—they were the deeds to their new homes. We see the daughters of Zelophehad finally receiving their inheritance, proving once again that God remembers His specific promises to individuals. But we also see a looming problem: the inhabitants of the land are “determined to stay,” and some tribes are starting to settle for co-existence rather than total victory.

It’s the place where we belong; our place of history and roots. Tricia noted an amazing equation for claiming your territory: Power + Persistence = Promise and Possession.

When the tribes complained about the Canaanites’ iron chariots, Joshua didn’t offer them an easier path. He told them to get to work clearing the forests and taking the land even though the enemy was strong. It reminds us of the “Even If” song by Mercy Me—even if the mountain doesn’t move, God is still able.

We see this “even though” all through Scripture:

• Even though the Jordan was at flood stage, God said cross.

• Even though David walked through the valley of the shadow of death, he feared no evil.

• Even though Jesus was buried, God had a bigger plan for Sunday morning.

Father, thank You that a little bit of faith is all we need because You are the one doing the heavy lifting. When we face our own version of iron chariots, help us to be strong and courageous. We trust in Your power to help us claim the territory You have for us. Amen.

TODAY’S READING: Joshua 12:7–15:20.

WORD OF THE DAY: Land.

After forty years of living in tents and shifting sands, the Israelites are finally getting something they can call their own: Land.

It’s easy to read through lists of boundaries and cities and miss the miracle. But as we look at these maps, we are seeing the literal fulfillment of a promise made hundreds of years prior. Abraham only saw this land from a distance; today, his descendants are planting roots in it. It reminds us that God’s timing is rarely our timing, but His arrival is always certain.

Defined as a portion of the earth’s surface distinguishable by boundaries or ownership. For the Israelites, land meant rest. It meant a legacy. Tricia shared about her ancestors in the Flint Hills of Kansas and even 14 generations back in Scotland—there is something powerful about knowing where you belong.

Caleb is a standout today. While most 85-year-olds might be looking for a rocking chair, Caleb was looking for a sword. He wanted the hill country inhabited by the descendants of Anak (the giants). He knew that giants fade when you focus on God. If Caleb had a bumper sticker, it would say: “The Lord’s promise is my motivation and His strength is my foundation.”

We also can’t overlook Aksah, Caleb’s daughter. When given a portion of dry land, she didn’t just settle. She went to her father and asked for springs of water. He gave her the upper and lower springs—more than she even requested. It’s a beautiful picture of how our Heavenly Father delights in giving us the “living water” we need to thrive in the land He’s given us.

TODAY’S READING: Joshua 10:1–12:6.

WORD OF THE DAY: Victory.

If you’ve been feeling the “heaviness” of the wilderness years, today’s reading is the breath of fresh air you’ve been waiting for. We are finally seeing the fulfillment of the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Tricia shared a sweet story about her three-year-old grandson, Hudson, winning at Mario Kart. How? Because his dad’s thumb was on the controller, guiding every move. That is exactly how victory worked for Joshua. The Israelites were doing the work—marching and fighting—but the victory was 100% steered by God. Whether it was causing a hailstorm or holding the sun in place, God proved He is the ultimate Warrior.

It’s defined as overcoming or winning in a struggle over an opponent. We see this in Joshua 10:14: “There has never been a day like it before or since... surely the Lord was fighting for Israel.”

It can be hard to read about the total destruction of these nations. However, we have to remember that God was bringing justice to a culture that practiced child sacrifice and deep moral corruption. He wanted a pure land for His “treasured possession” so they wouldn’t be led astray.

Michelle reminded us of Ephesians 6—our struggle today isn’t against flesh and blood, but spiritual forces. Where do you need God to “swoop in” and take care of an overwhelming situation today? Are you ready to “stand firm” and let Him handle the controls?

Have you ever noticed how the biggest mistakes often happen right after the biggest victories? After the miracle at Jericho, Israel faced two major setbacks—one caused by hidden sin and the other by a lack of prayer.

Michelle shared a beautiful picture of moving out of a house—you don’t leave bits of dust or old hangers behind if you want a fresh start. God wants the “left behinds” of our old lives cleared out so He can fill us completely with Himself.

God was clear: don’t take the plunder. But Achan saw, coveted, took, and hid. It’s the same pattern we’ve seen since the Garden of Eden. Because of one man’s choice, the entire “camp” suffered. It reminds us that our “private” choices often have public consequences.

Later, the Gibeonites showed up with moldy bread and worn-out sandals, claiming they were from a far-off land. The Israelites “sampled their provisions” (used their physical senses) but “did not inquire of the Lord” (neglected their spiritual connection).

Where are you moving forward based on “moldy bread” logic? Is there an area of your life—maybe a habit like secular romance novels or even just the sugar in your cupboard—that God is asking you to clear out completely to make room for a new victory?

Have you ever felt like God’s instructions didn’t make any logical sense? Welcome to the Book of Joshua. Today, we are witnessing some of the most iconic moments in all of Scripture.

To march is to move in a direct, purposeful manner. The Israelites weren’t strolling or wandering anymore. They were moving with intent. But notice the order of operations in Chapter 5:

1. They consecrated themselves.

2. They renewed the covenant.

3. They celebrated the Passover.

4. They ate the produce of the land (and the Manna stopped).

5. Then the Commander of the Lord’s Army appeared.

In the spring, the Jordan River isn’t a creek; it’s a 100-foot wide, 10-foot deep torrent. In 1854, an expert swimmer couldn’t even cross it! Yet, the moment the priests’ feet touched the edge, the water stood up like a wall. God doesn’t just make a way; He makes a statement.

Joshua sees a man with a drawn sword and asks, “Are you for us or our enemies?” The answer is classic: “Neither.” He is the Commander of the Lord’s Army. He wasn’t there to join Joshua’s fight; Joshua was there to join His. This is a reminder that we don’t recruit God to our plans; we surrender to His.

Think of Rahab watching from her window on the wall. For six days, she saw a silent, disciplined army. She saw their faith in action. When those walls finally fell, every chain holding her to her past broke. She didn’t just survive; she marched into a brand-new life and into the very lineage of the Messiah.

Tricia mentioned that “the walls are falling down” in her own life as she simply marches where God asks. Where are you currently “marching” by faith? Are you moving with purpose, or just wandering?

Lord, thank You for being the Commander who goes before us. Give us the discipline to stay silent when You say “hush,” and the courage to shout when You say “now.” Help us to march faithfully into the new seasons You have prepared. Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY: Courageous.

We’ve done it! Genesis, Job, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and now Deuteronomy are complete. Six long, complicated, and beautiful books are in the books (literally). Today, we stand on the bank of the Jordan as leadership shifts from Moses to Joshua.

In the original Hebrew, this implies mental and moral strength. It’s the ability to persevere and withstand danger. God didn’t just suggest Joshua be brave; He commanded it.

One of the highlights of today’s conversation was a “lightbulb moment” from our Facebook community. For years, many of us thought the “half-tribe” of Manasseh was just a group split geographically. But as a community member pointed out, it’s actually about Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, each becoming a “half” of Joseph’s tribal inheritance. Reading in community makes the Bible “fully orbed”—the colors get brighter when we share what we’re learning!

Then there is Rahab. She had no Ten Commandments. she had no cloud by day or fire by night. She only had “town folk rumors” and a watchful eye. Yet, she is held up in the New Testament alongside Abraham! James 2 tells us her faith was made right by her actions. She didn’t just believe God was big; she risked her life because she knew He was different.

As Tricia’s friend Ally Worthington says, “Fear screams at us when we are on the cusp of a new season ripe with strength and beauty.” If you are feeling afraid today, it might be the very signal that God is about to do something incredible.

Michelle shared about an elderly widow who, despite her grief, chose to live a life of incredible courage, feeding “strays” and sharing Jesus at Walmart. Where have you seen “courage in a different face” lately? How can you mirror that today?
