Brazilians have elected far-right populist Jair Bolsonaro as the country's next president.

Bolsonaro won just over 55% of the run-off vote, easily defeating his left-wing rival, Fernando Haddad.

Saudi prosecutor arrives in Istanbul

The Saudi chief prosecutor, Saud al Mojeb, has arrived in Istanbul as part of the ongoing investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The prominent Saudi critic was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 by a hit squad sent from Riyadh.

His body has yet to be found.

Mojeb is expected to meet the Istanbul prosecutor and other senior Turkish officials.

Erdogan to open new Istanbul airport

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to open what is planned to become one of the world's biggest and busiest airports.

The soft launch of the massive project is being held on Turkey's Republic Day.

Dignitaries from over 18 countries are expected to attend Monday's ceremony.

The Saudi journalist was killed in Istanbul on October 2 by a hit squad sent from Riyadh.

Spate of pipe bombs in US highlights political tensions

In the US, federal agents are zeroing in on Miami as the possible source of at least ten pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats, critics of President Trump, and CNN.

None detonated and no one has been hurt.

The attacks come less than two weeks before midterm Congressional elections that are shaping up as a referendum on Trump's agenda.

Assad regime and its allies breach Idlib ceasefire

Syria, and the White Helmet civil-defence agency says the Assad regime and allied terrorist groups are continuing to shell Idlib, despite a Turkish and Russian agreement to halt the fighting there.

In the latest flare-up, shelling killed one civilian and injured three others on Thursday.

Idlib is the last major rebel and opposition stronghold in Syria.

Japanese prime minister visits China

Japan's prime minister is in China, the visit first there by a Japanese leader in seven years.

Shinzo Abe met Chinese premier Li Keqiang and is scheduled to meet President Xi Jinping later today.

China is Japan's largest trading partner and economic ties have remained strong despite political differences.

Greece escapes major earthquake damage

And finally,

A powerful earthquake struck off western Greece early on Friday. But in good news for a change, damage was slight and there have been no casualties reported so far.

But, it was felt in Athens, and as far away as Albania, Italy and Libya.

Turkish police are still searching for the body of the prominent Riyadh critic.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's crown prince has spoken publicly about Khashoggi's murder for the first time.

Mohammed bin Salman said the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

He also spoke by telephone to Turkey's President Erdogan about the case.

Turkish authorities have identified several people in the Saudi hit squad as having ties to the crown prince or his security detail.

Bin Salman denies any involvement.

Asia shares sink after Wall Street rout

Markets now, and Asian stocks sunk on Thursday after a heavy sell-off overnight on Wall Street.

Analysts are pointing to a slew of reasons why the markets are down, but the biggest one simply seems to be, it's in their nature: they go up, they go down.

Trump has slammed the attempted cover-up of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi as the "worst cover-up ever."

Poorly conceived, terrible execution and a botched ending - is how the US president reacted to the death of the prominent Saudi journalist.

The government critic was killed in the monarchy's consulate in Istanbul by a hit squad sent from Riyadh.

Search for Khashoggi's body continues

Meanwhile, Turkey is continuing its investigation of Khashoggi's death on October 2.

President Erdogan on Tuesday described it as a "premeditated" and "brutal murder."

There is still no news about the whereabouts of Khashoggi's body, which Saudi officials say was disposed of in Turkey.

MBS to speak publicly for the first time since Khashoggi's killing

The Saudi leadership has denied any knowledge of, or involvement in Khashoggi's killing, although some members of the hit squad had close ties to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Bin Salman is expected to speak today in Riyadh at the Future Investment Initiative, which many big businesses and prominent people boycotted over Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkey has called for everybody involved in the killing of the Saudi critic to face justice, no matter who and how high they are.
