Devotionables

Jesus is preaching to his disciples about life in the Kingdom of Heaven. He continues to ratchet up teachings linking anger and murder. Jesus teaches that they come from the same place in deep recesses of sinful hearts. We must do battle with indwelling sin and look to Jesus to save us and sanctify us.

Jesus is teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven in the Sermon on the Mount. In the Kingdom, there is no grading on a curve. For those who would wish to enter, the prerequisite is perfect righteousness. That excludes everyone since we've all fallen short. The good news is that Jesus provides us with the righteousness required for entering the Kingdom!

In Matthew 5:12-16, Jesus tells us to pursue righteousness, expect persecution, and live in a way that brings glory to the Father. Using simple examples of salt and light, Jesus asks believers to live in a way that others see a difference in us for the glory of God our Father. How can you be salt and light to those around you today?

The beatitudes are renown across both Christendom and the world. As Jesus begins his famous Sermon on the Mount, he charges his disciples to be happy people because much more is given them than this world. Are we happy people? Does the world consider us happy? Let this reminder in Matthew from Jesus help us see the beauty of being disciples of Christ.

Are you the kid in class who can't be bothered to participate or do the assignments given by the teacher? The Teacher of this world - God - will grade our assignments. Many people ignore or forget God, but God is clear in his Word - he doesn't forget us, and he will judge all peoples. Don't be the kid too cool to be seen being obedient to God by loving him and his Word.

The roar of the crowd can be thrilling. When our favorite sports team completes a victory in the waning moments, we can become enthralled. Those moments are great, but they pale in comparison to the Almighty God, who is our Creator and Redeemer. The Psalmist tells us to Praise Him! Sing Praises! Clap your hands! Worship!

God is our help- a refuge in times of adversity. Psalm 46 tells us that we can trust that nothing happens that is a surprise to our God. We are assured that He is with us and brings strength in times of need.

Israel has just experienced a great defeat. It leaves the people wondering where God is, and the psalmist cries out to him for help! God's delays are not always his denials. He promises his loyal love to us, and he will help us. God is always working in more profound ways than what always meets our eyes. He is faithful. Trust him today, tomorrow, and with eternity.

There is a song based on Psalms 42 and 43 called "Satisfied in You." Some of the lyrics read, "Let my sighs give way to songs that sing about your faithfulness. Let my pain reveal your glory as my only real rest. Let my losses show me all I truly have is you. Why am I down? Why so disturbed? I am satisfied in you." This kind of speech is faith-inducing self-talk that one who knows the Word of God and remembers the promises of God can speak to themselves in moments of despair. Don't listen to the wicked who taunt, Satan who accuses, or your circumstances that despair. Fill your heart with Scripture and let the Spirit apply it as you speak the truth that we have hope in God no matter what goes on around us.

We find it relatively easy to recommend restaurants, hotels, movies, vacations, and on and on the list might go. But for some reason, too many of us as God's children share what God has done for us far too rarely. God is our help. We cry to him. He delivers and provides. When we see God act on our behalf, what should we respond? We should respond with worship, thanksgiving, increased trust, and proclaiming to others what he has done for us. Let us boldly share what God has done for us.
