Scripture:
“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” — Revelation 2:4
It is possible to do the right things for the wrong reasons.
There are seasons in life when we eagerly pursue something—a goal, a milestone, or an opportunity we have long anticipated. Our hearts are fully engaged. But over time, repetition can quietly replace passion. What once felt meaningful can begin to feel routine.
The same can happen in our spiritual lives.
In Revelation 2, Jesus speaks to the church at Ephesus. He commends their hard work, their endurance through difficulty, and their commitment to sound doctrine. From the outside, everything appeared strong.
Yet Jesus says something striking: “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.”
They had not abandoned the work. They had not rejected the truth. But somewhere along the way, their affection for Christ had cooled.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we reflect on the subtle danger of serving faithfully while slowly drifting in affection. It is possible for the hands to remain busy while the heart grows distant.
Jesus does not call His people to simply do more. Instead, He calls them to remember, repent, and return—to rediscover the love that once shaped their devotion.
Christ desires more than activity. He desires our hearts.
