Comfort is something we naturally seek.

It is possible to do the right things for the wrong reasons.

There are seasons in life when we eagerly pursue something—a goal, a milestone, or an opportunity we have long anticipated. Our hearts are fully engaged. But over time, repetition can quietly replace passion. What once felt meaningful can begin to feel routine.

The same can happen in our spiritual lives.

In Revelation 2, Jesus speaks to the church at Ephesus. He commends their hard work, their endurance through difficulty, and their commitment to sound doctrine. From the outside, everything appeared strong.

Yet Jesus says something striking: “I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.”

Have you ever wondered what was going through the mind of a leader?

There are moments when decisions made by those in authority feel confusing or difficult to understand. We may wish we could see behind the curtain of decision-making. We want clarity, explanations, and reassurance that things are being handled wisely.

But Scripture reminds us of something greater than human leadership.

In Ezra 7, a Persian king made a decision that allowed the rebuilding and beautifying of the house of the Lord. Ezra did not credit clever persuasion or political maneuvering. Instead, he gave praise to God, recognizing that the Lord had placed this decision in the king’s heart.

This reminds us of a powerful truth: while leadership operates on human levels, authority ultimately rests under God’s sovereignty. He is able to move hearts, guide decisions, and accomplish His purposes—even through people who may not recognize Him.

There will always be decisions we do not fully understand. But our confidence does not rest in human authority. It rests in the God who rules over it.

In Luke 17:32, Jesus gives one of the shortest commands in all of Scripture: “Remember Lot’s wife.” Just three words — yet behind them is a powerful warning.

Lot and his family were being rescued from a city under judgment. They were told clearly not to look back. But as they fled, Lot’s wife turned to look behind her — and in that moment, everything changed.

Every day we make choices.

What we allow into our minds.

What influences we entertain.

How we respond to situations placed before us.

Some decisions feel small. Others feel weighty. Yet all of them quietly shape the direction of our lives.

In James 4:7, we are given a simple but powerful instruction: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” The order matters.

Victory over temptation does not begin with resisting the devil. It begins with submitting to God. Submission is not weakness — it is alignment. It is the daily choice to place ourselves under God’s authority and trust His wisdom above our own desires.

When we live in surrender to God, we receive strength to resist what would pull us away from Him.
