YA Parallel Worlds SciFi Tale with a Fantasy Feel
SERIES INFO: This is Book #1 of 3 in the Design Trilogy. All 3 books are available on audio.
A prickly young artist is plucked out of her dead end life in a dead end town and thrust into a dimension hopping adventure (with a chance for a bit of romance). And its up to her to save everyone. Dont worry, shes up to task. Just dont try to keep stuffing her back in the box, because shes a brainstorming kind of girl and not afraid to leap before she looks.
Storey - A very practical & levelheaded young woman, with a bit of slacker problem (possibly caused by a learning/behavioral disability). Despite the fact that she comes up with most of the ideas and solutions, it didnt come off as Mary Sue to me. It really does seem to be a natural consequence of her coming at it as a complete stranger and newbie with no preconceived notions.
Eric - Apparently didnt have much of a life before he met Storey. Possessed of a firm sense of justice and right. Once he stops fighting it, he makes a good partner.
No InstaLove or Love Triangle - he finds her frustrating; her first response to his (too typical in fiction) good looks is simply a desire to sketch him. Shes as practical about her love life as everything else.
QUOTE: Sex appeal was great, but could she count on Eric when things went wrong? She didn't know. She could only hope so. Someone needed to watch her back.
The Can I please slap him (repeatedly)? award goes to Erics father.
The science of Erics world is never fully explained, but appears to be internally consistent.
The ending resolves the main plot, but ends with a cliffhanging set up for the next book.
NARRATION: I didnt like her voice at first, but was able to overcome that.

    Sheer magic!
I have been waiting eagerly, impatiently, hungrily for Stevenson's next book in the Hinky Chicago world and A Taste of You does not disappoint. I bought it one afternoon last weekend, read it that night without putting it down, and now... I'm waiting again. I can't get enough of this world.
You might think, what with all the books these days about zombies, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and the whole panoply of things that go bump, that every possible variation on the paranormal theme had pretty much been done. Not so; Stevenson's Hinky Chicago owes nothing to any existing magic-touched world. It's the freshest and most creative concept imaginable... and the most convincing.
Not only that, the writing is intelligent, snappy, and utterly absorbing, the plot is fast-paced and enjoyably wild, and the characters are fun to be around.
This is wonderful stuff. Wonderful. Encore! Encore!
    Loved Hel and Nick
Loved this. Hel and Nick are the kind of unusual characters that bring me back to romance novels - because they (especially Hel) are PEOPLE who are interesting in their own right, not just because of their attraction to each other. Stevenson's characters are smart and sassy, the world she's created is a fun place to hang out in, and the love story comes to a satisfying but not smarmy conclusion. You can't ask for much more.
    Hinky is so fun
I like Stevenson's Hinky Chicago series - it is not highbrow it is funny, frothy, a desert you can read in a few hours. The sexuality is fun. The mysteries worked through are fun. The whole situation is fun. Fun. If you are not looking for fun do not buy this book or any of her others.
    Hel on wheels
A new and novel approach to vampire romance. Hel is on a roller derby team wear she can get the energy she needs. She gets caught up in a scheme to recover a magic coin and encounters romance on the way. I thought the book was unique and a fast read.
Excellent book and very excellent series!!
This book was different from the others in the series so far...where's Jewel, Randy and Clay?? While I did miss them a bit Hel and Nick kept me quite entertained! This is a gritty, twisty, dark but balanced with light and romance. I absolutely loved this book!! I didn't put it down until the very last page and was very sad that it was over but what a story!!! Hel has met her match in Nick, Hel is an energy demon and Nick is a Magic bloodhound and they balance each other so well I'm so happy that they found each other and really shocked to learn that Dr. Katterfelto isn't a bad guy, he's a little crazy but actually very helpful and really into the science behind the magic which I found very interesting.

    Members Reviews:
    love this series!!
I've already gushed over how much I love this series in my review of Marshal of Hel Dorado. This second book is great. It was great to see Cody's struggle, and to see him finally find the mate he so longed for and deserved.
Reeling from the loss of Scarlett to Sam, Cody's wolf slinks off alone, intent on dying. Cody the man seems content with this decision. They join Kid Kane when he runs from the family he thinks hates him, and the two journey together across country. They can't deny the code of honor they live by, however, and step in to help a group of Gypsies that are being attacked by wild Indians. Enter Mariska.
A feisty Gypsy Princess, Mariska thinks to drive Cody and Kid away, but is instead left to their mercy by her family when she knowingly breaks their laws by her actions. Cody the man is entranced by her. Cody the wolf wants to kill her. Mariska is drawn to Cody, and must tame the wolf if she wants to be with the man.
I loved reading this story, Ms. Long has created a wonderful world with sexy men and feisty women. I truly enjoy this series.
    Brilliant Writing
This is the second book in Heather Long's Fevered Heart series and it starts where the first book Marshal of Hel Dorado left off. I would call this series a historical western paranormal romance. So if any of that interests you, this is a must read!
This book is about Cody and Marika's but Kid plays an important role. Cody's wolf is upset because he thinks he lost his mate. Kid has his own secrets and decides he needs to head west so Cody follows because he doesn't want the boy going alone. They help each other along their journey.
I'll warn you, once you start reading you will not be able to put this book down. It IS that good.
Heather has a wonderful writing style and I look forward to reading more of her work. Especially Kid's book.
    Keep writing, Heather.
    The wolf
After reading Book One in a collection, along with an excerpt from this book, there was no way to not keep going. Set in Texas in the mid 1850's, the series blends paranormal with suspense, romance and history. Cody, a fevered wolf shifter, and Kid, a closet fevered, leave the Kane ranch during a wedding celebration. Cody' s wolf has lost his mate to another man, and Kid is tired of his father's rejection. They travel west into New Mexico, where danger takes many forms. While book one was great, this book is even better. I am looking forward to book three.
    This one is so good
I'm not writing these reviews in order, sorry but I just can't break the flow to write an immediate review
I started with "Marshal of Hel Dorado" and loved Heather's style.

    Too long
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Faster pace and no repeating over and over
If youve listened to books by Dawna Raver before, how does this one compare?
    Was first time
Have you listened to any of Tanya Ebys other performances before? How does this one compare?
    First time
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Colour Wielders?
    ALL the contious repeats
    Any additional comments?
The story has potential, but......it is very dragged out by repeating over and over again why the colors were tainted and what dove meant and why arik doesn't like Devon, how much the whiney heroine missed her mother, that her father supposedly abounded them, and what a changeling was, how it was controlled and that Morgana is the very same from Arthur and so on and so on.
I really thought this would be right up my alley, it would have been.
I'm by no means a fan of fifty shades, but at least the flow did interest me enough to buy and read the remaining two books, color wielder doesn't even evoke the slightest interest to do so with its sequel.
I had to force myself to finish it, thinking it will pick up in pace, naw, never mind... Quinn can stay as Morgana's hostage, I give a dAng if Aric or Devon will get her, sorry, but as I said before BORING

One way or another, terror will reign tonight.
School teacher and single mom, Emma Livingston, has been through hell and back, so she thinks. While dealing with the night terrors and active imagination of her five-year-old daughter Hannah, she attempts to lead a normal life. That is, until the demon from those nightmares pays her a visit, too, and threatens both of their lives. Desperate, she reaches out for help - and finds Michael waiting.
Michael D'Angelo is known to everyone in Prophet's Point, Arizona, as their loving elementary school principal. But to The Brethren, he is the most powerful Protector. Immortal and angelic does not mean he's without doubts or fears, as protecting Emma and Hannah from Evil tests his ability to fight his tortured past.
As the Trinity is formed, ancient secrets are revealed and faith is tested. When a prophecy is exposed, Hannah becomes the main target and Emma wonders if a normal life will ever be possible again. Hope is like an anchor, but can a mother, her daughter, and an angel overcome the evil determined to annihilate the world?
    Members Reviews:
    Sweet PG 13 Paranormal
I hate to say I wasn't terribly impressed with this audio book, but of course, reading (or listening to the written word) is a subjective experience. For me, I would have liked more depth to the characters. I also like my heroes (particularly my paranormal heroes) to be a bit grittier and tougher than Micheal.
Michael is an angel, and his character was more in keeping with what is classically considered "angelic". Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. That he was also a high school principal, the heroine's boss, when he wasn't out fighting evil and saving the world was a bit, well..uh..huh?? Why? I mean, he didn't know who Emma was or what her role in his life would be beforehand. So why would an ageless immortal "protector" moonlight as a high school principal?
Emma is a teacher and the mother of an almost 6 year old daughter. She is, of course, the perfect mother. Her daughter is the classic "too cute for words" kid. Until Michael reveals that they have powers and are meant to join forces with the "Brethren" to fight evil.
There were slight (and I mean very slight) religious overtones to this book, like biblical names or phrases (ie. The Brethren), certain prayers that must be answered, etc, but in all fairness these are not a real distraction to the pure paranormal lover, and never made me feel as if I were being preached to. There was some rough language, which almost surprised me given the rather "gentle" quality of most of the book. The sex is on the tame side, and the sex scenes are very short, particularly compared to what is popular lately, but I actually found that to be a welcome difference. There was plenty of action that moved quickly, but steadily, and I found the pacing of the book to be pretty much perfect.
My real problem, I think, besides rather stereotypical characters, was the narration. I'm afraid Linda Velwest just didn't read the story with any sort of passion. She did make an effort and was, as best I could tell, consistent with the numerous male voices. However, her narration was stilted and her inflection was off. Really, it was quite a bland narration. I got this book cheaply with a whispersync deal, but I think I would have been none too happy if I'd spent a credit on it.
