"The Mortals in the House" by Charles Dickens provides the framework for the tales, which include two more of his own stories. Counting Elizabeth Gaskell and Wilkie Collins among its other contributors, The Haunted House examines quintessentially Victorian themes - sex and longing, nostalgia and loss - in ways that continue to resonate today.
Ingeniously conceived and written, and spiked with flashes of Dickensian humor, this volume is a strange and sheer delight.

    Not Scary--But Rather Romantic
What did you like best about The Haunted House? What did you like least?
The best part of this book were the colorful characters and dry humor. The worst part was that it isn't really a legitimate collection of ghost stories. Although the titles of the stories offered start with "The Ghost . . ." most of the stories are simply colorful Victorian romances and humerous sketches.
Has The Haunted House turned you off from other books in this genre?
The Haunted House has not turned me off to other books in this genre--which I would consider Victorian Romance--what turned me off was that I I feel the title and the vague framework that Dickens tied it all together with was misleading. I was expecting really scary stories, like Dicken's "The Signalman"--but the book failed to produce that type of tale.
Which character as performed by Philip Bird was your favorite?
The narrator was my favorite character.
Was The Haunted House worth the listening time?
This book is worth the listening time if one is aware of what type of book it really is--namely not a collection of scary stories--but rather a collection of witty Victorian sketches.
    Any additional comments?
If you like books like those written by Jane Austin and the Bronte Sisters you would probably be pleased with the selection offered here--but if you want bone chilling tales of terror you definitely won't find it here and would be better off with an Edgar Allen Poe anthology.
    A Dickens treasure trove!
Wow! Who knew about this book and didn't tell me before? It is a series of stories written by Dickens and by friends whom he asked to participate, amongst others the great Wilkie Collins, and the longest one which is written by the glorious Elizabeth Gaskell. It is a most intriguing collection and I urge everyone with an interest in this period to listen to Philip Bird's incredible narration. He is supreme in his characterisations of material of this sort.
Not so much haunted as horrid
I sadly felt that the narratives in this compendium ghost story didn't really deliver and felt this was a poor release.

Gross, Gory, Rude, Racist, I Loved It
This is an extreme story, which is why it is included in Necro Files: Two Decades of Extreme Horror. Lansdale reads it and he does a great job. This is not for the faint hearted, politically correct, or anyone with good taste. Buyer beware.
    Dark Voices
I suggest you get Necro Files, instead of this, although this is not as bad as some of the other Dark Voices. These people seem to think playing irritating music adds to the story. In this case it distracts more than enhances. While Dark Voices attempted to ruin this, Landsdale's talent as a writer and as a performer overcame.
    Audiobook ruined by annoying music
I love Joe Lansdale, I love listening to him reading his stories, and I think that this is one of his best stories, but this audiobook is pretty music worthless due to the annoying music that plays during the whole audiobook.
If there was a version that fixed this problem, I would probably give it five stars.

You cannot kill what is already dead.

"This exuberantly entertaining horror novel is grade-A Laymon....this one hurtles from start to finish - never mind the large cast and tripartite plot - and as in all Laymons, the sex, violence and violent sex will leave even jaded readers gasping." (
    Publishers Weekly)

    Bad first impression
This was my first Laymon book and after listening to this I am not sure I will give him another chance. Too mutch sex not enough blood and terror. Its supposed to be a horror novel not a graphic romance!
Richard Laymon is an under appreciated writer
I'm glad to see audible post some Richard laymon titles, however these are not really his best work. I recommend "In the Dark" or "The Traveling Vampire Show"
    off-putting
I read the reviews so I had some inkling this might be bad, but well, the reviews were right. It started off fairly good, but went downhill rapidly. I'm sad to say I couldn't finish. Deleted it from my iPod.
    Repulsive
What would have made To Wake the Dead better?
I was only able to make it through half of this book. I'm not familiar with Richard Laymon, but I kept thinking that this book was written by a very horny 13 year old. The sex scenes were graphic and unnecessary for the most part.Mr. Laymon cannot get into the mindset of any of the characters, it seems. But where I really threw in the towel was in one of the many many many subplots when the sex slave was portrayed as enjoying the rape?? Please! And there isn't enough focus on the mummy herself.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gene Engene?
Gene Engene while a good reader, made this bad book even worse. His style didn't fit the story at all.
    Vulgar and unnecessary
So I was looking for a good mummy story to put me in the spirit of Halloween. This. was. not. the. one. The story started off with potential, but it soon became something that took 6 months for me to finish listening to as it was so extreme and spiritually draining. There are various subplots that all seem thrown out there - no rhythm nor reason to any of them at all. All the characters are tossed around and thrown into a blender for good measure, culminating in a grand finale which is anything but grand. The author seems to have no notion whatsoever into the mindset of the obese, which struck a cord with me early on when a "crush" loses her mind and nails a cat to one of the protagonist's doors when he rejects her for the pert, know-it-all (and quite annoying) blonde. Why this level of obsession so quickly and without warning? And a cat to the door? Please. Come on. Really. As for the rest of the book, it was extremely sexually violent with little to no reason behind any of it. The author also seems to have trouble with the motivations of the truly, desperately lonely as well, turning them from sympathetic characters and into murderers and sexual sadists.

    Publisher's Summary:
Delapore. It's just a name, now. In this case, it is the name of a man returning to England to reclaim the lands of his family. The name of a man who knows the skeletons in his family's closet - or so he thinks.
Delapore. Surely it is possible to outlive the past. Surely it is possible to outrun one's ancestors, to outrun history, to outrun fate. Surely a man's destiny lies in his own hands, and not in the misdeeds of men a hundred generations dead.
Beware, England. The last Delapore has come home.
This is a full-cast, soundscaped audio dramatization of a classic work by one of the masters of horror, featuring the voice of Harlan Ellison as Delapore.
    Editorial Reviews:
Brad Stricklands adaptation of H. P. Lovecrafts gothic story of madness, generational cannibalism, and how the past tinges the present is hauntingly performed by the Atlanta Radio Theater Company, accompanied for the occasion by the award-winning science fiction icon Harlan Ellison. This tragedy of "cosmic horror" begins with what seems like a great gift, an ancestral English manor. It continues with the discovery of an infamous family legacy with ancient, forbidden practices, and ends with the continuation of a curse that once known by a descendant of the house of Delapore can never be escaped. Multiple voices and sound effects create an almost hallucinatory auditory experience lingering long after all else is silent .

    Marvelous Performance
The Atlanta Radio Theater Company did an exemplary production of Lovecraft. This particular story has a touch of controversy with it's original source material given the original name of the Delapore Cat. Not willing to upset the audience, they brilliantly used a simple creative solution towards the old racist controversy. By doing so, it doesn't distract from the atmosphere of the story.
Additionally, every spoken word had my complete attention and the production did Lovecraft justice in demonstrating the insanity and horror of the story. Great set up, gripping fallow through, and an ending only Lovecraft fans can predict.
    Lovecraft and Ellison
Very good performance. Good for a dark night. You won't be disappointed if you purchase this book.
    Awful!
Not at all what I expected & story is different than the one I know. Terrible narrating, don't waste you money.
Fantastic reading of a classic book
Would you listen to The Rats in the Walls (Dramatized) again? Why?
Of course, Harlan is a fantastic narrator and Lovecraft's work is just classic.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rats in the Walls (Dramatized)?
The book becomes more and more gruesome as time goes on. The great narration really helps you feel the emotions of the characters.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The horror in the protagonists voice as awful events unfold in front of him.

    Editorial Reviews:
The talents of the Atlantic Radio Theatre Company are on full display in this performance of a startling tale of scientific exploration gone awry. By way of a radio interview, Professor Dyer publicly details for the first time the horrors of what actually happened on his expedition to Antarctica in At the Mountains of Madness. This dramatization of the classic H. P. Lovecraft tale is composed of pitch-perfect narration from the radio host, Miss Ashton, whose encouraging voice is able to coax all of the grisly events out of the shaky professor to the graduate student, Danforth, whose enthusiastic and almost naive delivery makes his fate all the more tragic.
    Members Reviews:
    performance was great
Lovecrafts writing style is hard to follow sometimes because he discribes all the scary stuff with third person conversations, but this dramatazation sets a wonderful stage and was really fun to listen to. If you like Lovecraft you will like this story, the recording was fantastic, complete with sound FX and multiple actors.
    Classic Lovecraft
This was a good short story in the traditional style of Lovecraft. Full of suspense and looming danger. It again covers the ancient ones and man's interaction with them. Well acted, and entertaining, and still even a little bit scary to listen to in the dark.
    Mountains of Madness
The Book itself is a Great litterary achievement and a full drama cast only makes it Better. Written by one of the most influinchal Sci-fi writters of all time, Lovecraft was said to be "The Greatest Horror Writter of the 21st Century"
Thomas E Fuller at his best
A creative liberty taken by having the interview take place in 1946. Given that Lovecraft died in 1937. Although it makes better sense with the change historically and makes it more enjoyable and possibly relatable.
Every Character overflows with life and motivation. You can feel the tension and fear in the voices as things go wrong. The horror when things get worse is stiff with ample shock value. The insanity and sadness of it's ending left me with a strong sense of grief for the surviving characters. Very well written for audio and stayed true to the souce material save for the above liberty taken. Excellent performance of the actors and sound mixers. Thomas E Fuller was brilliant in his day. This particular recording lights a fire of interest in his other work.
Did not like this at all.
I did not like this at all. It was just weird. I don't know where all the great reviews are coming from because I would not recommend this book at all.

    Unbelivable
Would you try another book from Mary Shelley and/or Richard Pasco?
Probably not by Mary Shelley unless this was her 1st book. I would listen to another narrated by Richard Pasco.
What could Mary Shelley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The story wasn't believable. The monster spoke with words I believe he would not have used. Maybe if the monster wasn't so elegant it would have been better for me.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Richard Pasco?
I think Richard did a fine job.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment would definitely be the adjective I would use. So much so I did not finish the book.
    Any additional comments?
Not finishing the book is probably the best comment I could make.
    excellent reading
What made the experience of listening to Frankenstein the most enjoyable?
I hadn't read the tale in many years, lots of things I'd forgotten about.
Who was your favorite character and why?
the monster, as he has an arc
What about Richard Pascos performance did you like?
i enjoyed his pacing and his voice
If you could take any character from Frankenstein out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    seriously? they're all horrid people
Wonderful story, but a tough listen.
I loved the story, but it was tough to keep interest during a lot of the supporting dialog.

    Publisher's Summary:
Willy Patrick, the respected author of the award-winning young-adult novel In the Night Room, thinks she is losing her mind...again. One day, she is drawn helplessly into the parking lot of a warehouse. She knows somehow that her daughter, Holly, is being held in the building, and she has an overwhelming need to rescue her. But what Willy knows is impossible, for her daughter is dead.
On the same day, author Timothy Underhill, who has been struggling with a new book about a troubled young woman, is confronted with the ghost of his 9-year-old sister, April. Soon after, he begins to receive eerie, fragmented e-mails that he finally realizes are from people he knew in his youth, people now dead. Like his sister, they want urgently to tell him something. When Willy and Timothy meet, the frightening parallels between Willy's tragic loss and the story in Tim's manuscript suggest that they must join forces to confront the evils surrounding them.
    Critic Reviews:
"Moving briskly while ranging from high humor to the blackest dread, this is an original, astonishingly smart and expertly entertaining meditation on imagination and its powers; one of the very finest works of Straub's long career." (Publishers Weekly)

    High (metafictional) weirdness
I recently read Lost Boy Lost Girl by the author and liked it a lot, so I decided to continue reading him with In the Night Room, since it's a sort-of-sequel to LBLG. While overall I liked it alright, and the start of the novel had some interesting elements, it became a little too weird even for me. I don't mind weird and I love metafiction, but it was hard to suspend my disbelief half-way through when Tim gets together with Willy. Then not much happens until the very end, except for Willy eating a lot of sugar which made me sick to my stomach while I was reading it.
Overall, some interesting stuff here that will probably keep you reading, but none of it had any emotional impact on me like the events of Lost Boy Lost Girl. I'll continue reading Mr. Straub, my next novel by him being Shadowland, so hopefully I like that one better.
    3 and a 1/2 stars.
    I didn't see it coming...
Of all the ways this story could have gone, I didn't see it going the way it did. A definite surprise. When you want a great story, Peter Straub is the guy you want to see, every time.

©1980 Jimcin Recordings; Cover Design ©2004 Brian J. Killavey
    Editorial Reviews:
Simplicity is the hallmark of this eerie, traditional recording of Dracula featuring a full vocal cast. Told through a series of diary entries and letters, Bram Stoker's time-honored tale of a terrifying, powerful vampire sees an artful reading, with particular attention paid to the sinister, Transylvanian tones of the monster himself, while solicitor Jonathan Harker's seriousness is the perfect foil to the vampire's legendary menace. Though the audio production is pared-down, this allows the voice performances to shine, lending a solitary, ominous atmosphere to a classic tale of horror.
    Critic Reviews:
"This recording features particularly chilling vocal characterizations of the vampire and Jonathan Harker, which add greatly to the dramatic horror of the story. A highly popular recording." (Booklist)

    Great Listen
Being October, I thought this would be a good book to get me "in the spirit". Did it ever - Great book and read very well. I especially liked the way it was read by different people for different parts. "Johnathan Harker's Journal" by one reader, "Mina's Murray's Dairy" by another, "Val Helsings phonographic diary" ( the first audio book! ) by another and so on. This gave it a verisimilitude that just would not have happened with one reader. I give it five stars.
    Faithful adaptation
Enjoyable, if not slightly stilted in delivery, and some very odd attempts at English accents!
    Well done!
I have to admit, I was reluctant to get this version. We all know the story but I had never read it, so I thought to give it a try. There are many, many versions to pick from, but I'm glad I chose this one. The way the book is written from so many different perspectives makes the different narrators relevant. Each narrator takes on the characters persona and helps you remember who's view point is who's. I actually got cold chills running down my spine is some spots, which I thought was pretty telling of the narrators ability to read the book as it was intended. In a day an age where violence and vampires are so prevalent, and the public so jaded by violence in films and TV I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this original version.
    Drac of the day
I imagine during its time this was a horrific book, however, in our age it is somewhat ...plain? It is a must read for Drac fans of all ages.
    Unabridged? - I don't think so.
Caution!!!! This version has been heavily edited!!!! Check out the other version on this site. Don't make the mistake I did. What a bummer!

    Members Reviews:
Possibly may make the reader a bit squeamish
(Possible spoilers) This is a "tour de force" daydream that Anne Rice has chosen to share with the world, assigning a description of herself to the lead character (why not?). There is a sense that this built first upon a series of true events in someone's life (perhaps someone very dear to the author herself), and that through the story, the heroine is trying to come to grips with what has happened -- and reaffirm to herself that she has special gifts, not only with music, but in her ability to (as the old spiritual says) "rescue the perishing, comfort the dying".
    Loved it...
I suppose all things are in the eye of the beholder because I loved this read. Saw a lot of not so nice reviews of this book and was a little apprehensive going in, but I am so glad I took the risk and believed in Ms Rice's skills.
