    Language: English
    Release date: 12-16-99

    Publisher's Summary:
The novel begins with an explorer, Robert Walton, spotting an enormous creature speeding across a frozen shore, and then meeting the monster's creator, a melancholy scientist named Frankenstein. Dr. Frankenstein tells Walton the horrifying tale of his ambitious experiment in electrical reanimation, which resulted in a large, terrifying, unhappy creation. Spurned in his attempts at human intimacy, Frankenstein's monster becomes uncontrollable and unrepentant, forcing the scientist to set him free and send him into the unsuspecting world. More than a classic tale of terror,
Frankenstein also deals with profound psychological issues, including the dangers of technology and whether scientists have the right try to play God.To supplement this reading of
Frankenstein, listen to The SparkNotes Guide to Frankenstein.
    Editorial Reviews:
This audio production gives tremendous insight into why the tale that has spawned so many others created such a sensation in its original publication in 1816. What makes it an important piece of Romantic literature is evident to listeners through George Guidall's distinguished narration. The successive narratives of "the creator" and "the wretch" himself are brilliantly done. Each voice reflects the wide range of emotions and remains distinct. No Hollywood here, but subtle haunting in elegant style.
    Members Reviews:
    Overlooked classic
This story is much better than what the movies have shown. The author's poetic language was interesting in itself, but the story is suspenseful. It's hard to find books that enthrall me but this one will keep your attention. If nothing else give it a listen to see how badly the movies portrayed this book. Finally, the reader did a great job with all the characters and voice changes.
    Symbolism and Evidence
There is so much evidence and symbolism that you will be unable to comprehend this novel with out read or listening to it at least 3 or 4 times. This is so intense and I love it. Make sure when you play this audio file that you spread it out. The whole thing is about 10 hours long. You will enjoy it completely.
    Incredible tragedy!
The story is truly an epic tragedy of the sort the Ancient Greeks would have loved, but popular culture has truncated and dumbed down beyond recognition. The hubris of wealthy young man who wanted to be a god leads Victor Frankenstein to an awful experiment. When he succeeds, Frankenstein shows himself to possess fatal flaws of character and courage. The monster is not as monstrous as his creator!
There is a lot of horror but not a lot of gore. The audiobook narrator, George Guidal, is excellent.
    A classic book well read
Where does Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    One of the best.
Which character as performed by George Guidall was your favorite?
The reading by George Guidall is superb. He does such a fantastic job, this is the main reason I'm writing this review. All the characters are fleshed out, particularly the voice of the monster.
If you could take any character from Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The Monster. Listen to the book to find out why.

Are vampires a bloodthirsty menace to mankind? Or simply misunderstood creatures struggling to survive? After hearing these seven stories, you'll be able to decide for yourself. From the horrifying to the humorous, some of today's finest authors share stories about one of mankind's oldest imagined evils, the vampire. From F. Paul Wilson's title story to Esther Friesner's comic tale of rival teens trying to best one another, these stories bring vampires to (un)life, in all their majesty and terror. Stories included: "Bite-Me-Not or Fleur de Fur" by Tanith Lee, "Food Chain" by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, "Moonlight in Vermont" by Esther Friesner, ""Madaleine" by Barbara Hambly, "Victims" by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, "Seat Partner" by Chelsea Quinn Yarbo, and "Midnight Mass" by F. Paul Wilson.

    Eh...
The only story worth listening to in that collection was "The Midnight Mass". All the rest seem to be rehashed genre pieces that I'd either heard before or they just completely lacked feeling. The readers were also a little lackluster, either trying to hard or not enough. I can't recommend this title.

    Title: Portent
    Author: James Herbert
    Narrator: Jonathan Keeble

Length: 12 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-15-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
The end is beginning. The time is just a few short years from now. But already the signs of global disaster are multiplying. Freak storms, earthquakes, floods volcanic eruptions are sweeping the earth. The last violent spasms of a dying planet. Then a series of ominous events signal the emergence of new and terrifying forces.
While scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef a diver watches fascinated as a tiny light floats past him towards the surface. Moments later he is torn to pieces as the reef erupts with shattering power. In the Chinese city of Kashi, travellers bring back reports of a strange light seen shining above the endless dunes of the Taklimakan Desert. And as the city's inhabitants watch for its return the desert rises up like a vast living thing to engulf them in a colossal tidal wave of sand. All have seen a portent: a sign of unimaginable powers about to be unleashed. A sign that something incredible is about to begin.
James Herbert was one of Britain's greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant best-seller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. Herbert went on to publish a new top ten best-seller every year until 1988. He wrote six more bestselling novels in the 1990s and three more since: Once, Nobody True and The Secret of Crickley Hall. Herbert died in March 2013 at the age of 69.
    Editorial Reviews:
The mass suicide of seven thousand king penguins is just the first of many ominous "portents" in best-selling thriller writer James Herbert's tale of escalating natural disaster. The very Earth itself seems to be fighting humanity like an immune system defending itself against a foreign virus, but there seems to be more at work, as magic, strange orbs of light, and children with psychic abilities come into play. Jonathon Keeble performs the audiobook, the gravity of his theatrical delivery bringing the full weight of this epic thriller down to the surface of our fragile planet.
    Critic Reviews:
"Herbert was by no means literary, but his work had a raw urgency. His best novels, The Rats and 'he Fog, had the effect of Mike Tyson in his championship days: no finesse, all crude power. Those books were best sellers because many readers (including me) were too horrified to put them down." (Stephen King)
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory" (Daily Mail)
    Members Reviews:
    Dreadful.
I bought this because I like Keeble as a narrator but what a waste of time this book is. Its complete rubbish and wouldnt even make a channel five movie...oh no wait it would make a channel five movie because at least then no one would watch it.

    Title: The Voices
    Author: Frank Tallis
    Narrator: Gildart Jackson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-14-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 18 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Horror
    Publisher's Summary:
From Edgar nominee F. R. Tallis comes a new novel of psychological suspense that reinvents the classic haunted-house tale.
In the scorching summer of 1976 - the hottest since records began - Christopher Norton, his wife Laura, and their young daughter Faye settle into their new home in north London.
The faded glory of the Victorian house is the perfect place for Norton, a composer of film soundtracks, to build a recording studio of his own. But soon in the long, oppressively hot nights, Laura begins to hear something through the crackle of the baby monitor. First, a knocking sound. Then come the voices.
For Norton, the voices mark an exciting opportunity. Putting his work to one side, he begins the project of a lifetime - a grand symphony incorporating the voices - and becomes increasingly obsessed with one voice in particular... someone who is determined to make themselves heard.
    Members Reviews:
Interesting premise, pay off was meh
When I read the summary, I thought this would be a really creepy ghost story similar to the Shining. It was not. The author didn't really utilize the titular voices well, pushing them to the sidelines to focus on two failing marriages. I'm not saying that it's a bad idea, but it wasn't done well. Any moment that could be seen as creepy just ended with no lasting impression, and all of the plots and subplots ended with no resolution. They just stopped.
As for the actual writing, the author went in too much depth at times, to the point that he listed all the steps to a man going to the bathroom. It never really worked and just slowed the story down even more than it already was. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book
Where is the rest of the book?
I was so excited...then it ended. Without a resolution. So disappointed. Who was the ghost?

    Misquamacus is back....
The president of the United States is suddenly struck blind. Thousands more people mysteriously lose their sight, and America descends into chaos.
Self-styled mystic Harry Erskine is telling fortunes in Miami when his friend Amelia Crusoe calls on him for help. Algonquin medicine man Misquamacus has come back to life to seek a final revenge for the massacre of his people. But, this time, the odds of beating Misquamacus are suicidal indeed.
    Members Reviews:
Exciting Conclusion to The Manitou Series
Somehow, people are being blinded. No apparent reason, but their sight fails. And it's on an epdiemic scale causing numerous deaths.
The fifth and final book of the Misquemachus cycle has a scope that the previous entries didn't, even though some of them had far-ranging impact. Chicago city blocks are pulled down into the Great Beyond, vampires stalk New York, the scope has already been pretty impressive.
Native American wonder-worker Misquemachus returns with a plan to destroy descenmdants of those who smashed his civilization. He uses obscure Hopi demons to accomplish his mission. Even the president of the United States is blinded as cars crash and planes fall from the sky.
Phony psychic Harry Erskine enlists the help of his attractive mentor Amelia -- Amelia can do it for real. Between them, they are the only ones who understand Misquemachus and muist confront him.
Masterton pulled Misquemachus from an H.P. Lovecraft quotation for his first novel, The Manitou, along with the Great Old Ones who are key to allowing the medicine man's frequent returns. The book was filmed with Tony Curtis, Michael Ansara, and Stella Stevens as Amelia. In that first novel, Amelia was casually killed off but Masterton apparently thought better of it and quietly brought her back in subsequent books (in the context of the theme, I hesitate to use the term "resurrected").
In an online interview at the publisher's website, Masterton said he sought to widen the impact of Misquemachus's vengeance since this would be the last of the Manitou books. I admit a bit of disappointment at the gimmick used for the ultimate showdown because I encountered something similar in a short story I read some years past (I don't remember who did it) set in southeast Europe. For those who haven't read that same story it will be a pretty unique gimmick, and of course the whole thing has Masterton's own twist.
Great book. Although the Erskine stories are very readable, once you get past the first 100 pages, you'll find yourself galloping towards the end.
    Blind Panic by Graham Masterton
Blind Panic by Graham Masterton was an excellent read. Masterton fans won't be disappointed. This is the continuation of Misquamacas' attempts at vengence upon any non-native american for what was done to them in the past. It's up to Harry Erskine, and his allies to stop the wonder worker again. A brilliant use of one of Lovecraft's minor characters. Misquamacas' tales began with The Manitou, and continued in Revenge of the Manitou, Burial, and Manitou Blood. They don't need to be read, or read in order, to enjoy any of the other books.

    Wowwww!!
**received the audio book of Elizabeth for a honest review. **
wow!! I had to go back and check when this was first published. 1976. and Elizabeth is 14. this book is all kinds of fucked up. I won't go in to details as to why but just read the first page or listen to the first 30 minutes or so. there is so much "not ok" stuff happening here. with all that said, I loved the story. it's very 1970 witches and that's ok, that's a good thing!
Becca Grabowski did a fantastic job reading. everything was great, I found no flaws in the quality of the audiobook. I would definitely listen to more Valancourt books.
    Creepy and worth a listen
I enjoyed this short, creepy story. there are so many strange, colourful characters and an interesting story line packed into 4-5 hours. The narration was good. Definitely worth a listen.

The post-apocalyptic world is in transition. While things may seem safer, a great danger lurks under the surface and sometimes from above.
What does the Island have to do with the state of the world, and the invisible creatures? New threats arise and evil is tracked down. Will this finally be the end for Ben and his psychopathic lifestyle?
Continue the adventure as we find out what happened to Cooper, Lisa, and the others.

    Action, mystery, and tension aplenty.
Lisas transformation has everyone up in arms. Some folks want to be assured that she is their Lisa and others are convinced its some sort of trap. At any rate she is grilled for several hours. Jeff was the only one to figure it out and enlighten the rest of the crew. Much of this volume concerns Ben, his relationship with Dawn, and their psychotic adventures and encounters with other unfortunates. Believe me, if you find yourself in company with Ben and/or Dawn your luck has just run out. Not a lot of progress on the invisible creature front, where they come from or why theyre here; evidently were saving that for another book. The characters are great and theres action, mystery, and tension aplenty. I look forward to the next book in the series.
