    Laumer is Always Worth Reading
It has been a long time since I read this, but the rating was done just after I finished the book.
    Classic. Science. Fiction.
    What more can I say?
If you like classic science fiction, give it a try.
If you haven't read classic science fiction, give it a try -- you may find you like it.
    Surprisingly good
If the front matter is to be believed, this is a very early work by Laumer. If so, it's surprisingly mature (and makes me wonder again how he got typecast as just the author of Retief).
The title character, Greylorn, an officer in Terra's space navy, commands a mission to find a lost colony. About the first 90% of the novella is space adventure, with Greylorn battling two problems at the same time. There's pretty good suspense along the way, but when Greylorn resolves one of the two problems we just think he got lucky. What makes the story is the brief Epilogue, where we find out that his seeming luck was actually the result of careful deduction. This story structure reminded me a lot of Poul Anderson.
I did waver between 3 and 4 stars, because the help that Greylorn gets with his other problem is a classic deus ex machina, too good to be believed. But I decided to go with 4 in hopes that others will try this story and see that, though the Retief stories are fun, there was a lot more to Keith Laumer.
    Love Laumer
I simply like reading Laumer. When I was in junior college I read A Plague of Demons and was hooked. I had not come across any of his writing until recently. It is not Stat Wars, but if you like the older science fiction writing you will like Laumer.
    Cleverly written science fiction classic
I have a vague memory of having read a Kieth Laumer novel many decades ago, which I remember nothing about, except that I enjoyed it well enough. âGreylornâ is apparently one of his earliest works. It is genuine science fiction, rather than science fantasy, and tells an entertaining story of the captain of a star ship who cleverly manages to both quell a mutiny and defeat an imposing alien force. Well worth reading for science fiction fans.
    Good fun
This is not up to Laumer's Retief books, but it is still a good story. The villains are different, and then turn out to be even more different. The weak point I'd, the crew is made up of some undependable and even mutinous jerks. Such an important mission would not rely idiots to save the world.

Campbell story par excellence: weak novelistic skills combined with very strong speculative, imaginative theoretical physics. While one may be bored with the interminable lectures and rendered drowsy by the repeated space battles, but one must also admire Campbell's ingenuity in creating novel artifacts". The novel concerns a trio of heroes, Arcot, Morey and Wade, and their attempts to help a race of superdogs.

    Invaders from the Infinite
Having originally read this book in 1969/1970, and knowing how long ago it was written, I cannot give it the 5 stars I would have 50 years ago. Invaders is still a great, if dated, read and I recommend it to anyone interested in reading a work from the early years of SF.
    Give it a read.
Long before e.e. Doc Smith an epic battle of contending sciences. Man at his most optimistic. Science shows the way to peace.
I did not like it. It did not hold my interest
I did not like it. It did not hold my interest. I only read about 25% of book and then quit. Kept talking about motor drives and rays. Just not for me.
    Perfect Space Opera
Easy to read and simply fun. Campbell not only was a great editor, but as this yarn proves can write a good story. You will find better technically written stories, but this is a must read of the Golden Age of Science Fiction.
    lots of technological innovation!
Very fast paced glimpse of the author's ideas of technology not yet invented. Good thing it is a book, so the confusing parts can be studied.
    I enjoyed it

    Koby's destiny
What did you like best about this story?
This is a novella which is fast to read, grabbing you right from the beginning through to the end
    Great short story. Great narration
This is a great novella! The narration is excellent. It is fast paced and a lot happens in a short time. I cant wait to hear what happens to Koby and Destiny in the next book. The time flew by while listening to this story. We have not listened to Praying for War but it is not necessary for this story. Looking forward to another book by Hoffman.
    Oh Koby
Helps explain the intricacies of Koby! He's smart but dumb and funny but wrong. Lady Luck is on his side, but he would prefer she was on top.
Great Short Story in a Awesome World!!!
Even though this has a short listening time it is filled with an amazing amount of story. This really helps to flesh out one of the great characters from the first book in the series Praying for War; Koby. You get to hear about the beginning of the end of the world and how Koby tries to survive it. This is just an awesome listen
The narration was done by one of the authors which is always fun. Mr Moon does a very excellent job giving Kobys Destinys cast of characters each a nice wide range of variation that shows off his skill and talent. This was a fun fun listen.

    Intergalactic Travel
I am going to read more of John W. Campbell Jr.. Reading science fiction written in 1930 is a little amusing at times, but I very much like the way Mr. Campbell decribes the scientific principals that are still true today. Too bad Mr. Campbell is not alive today; we would have a wonderful talent with the latest in science.
    Campbell Primer
Historically interesting though the stories are immature in their development. Perhaps a bit too much on the technology side and far too little on the personal (character) side.
rip off from EE Doc Smith's books
i read this boook thinking i have read it before and i looked at the clasic EE Doc Smith books and noticed that it was almost the same as one of his i would not bother reading it if you have read EE Doc Smith's books in the past.

    Publisher's Summary:
Six billion identical clones make up the entire population of Earth, and William 790-6 (57th Iteration) is exactly like everybody else. In his one year of life he will toil in suburban mediocrity and spend as much cash as possible in order to please his corporate masters. When 790's first birthday (and scheduled execution) finally rolls around, a freak accident spares his life.
Living past his expiration date changes 790 profoundly. Unlike other clones he becomes capable of questioning the futility of his own existence. Seeking answers in the wilderness, he discovers a windmill with some very strange occupants, including a freakish, dinosaur-like monstrosity. Which is especially strange since every animal on earth is supposed to be extinct...
Dark, haunting, and blisteringly satirical, Billy and the Cloneasaurus is the story of one "man's" attempt to finally become an individual in a world of copies.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting dystopian full of clones
William 790 (later known as Billy) is a good clone. He goes to work every day in his boring insurance sales job, has the same thing to eat every night, catches the ball game with the other clones, sleeps, and gets up and does it all over again. Each clone gets 1 year of life and then he gets slurried. Its a world of monotony, Williams as far as you can see. Yet Billy manages to avoid getting slurried due to a freak accident. He then starts questioning his life and this entire existence.
I initially tried to read the ebook but then switched over to the audiobook. The beginning reminded me of that movie Ground Hog Day. Billy does the same routine again and again, even after the freak accident because thats what his replacement would have done. So it was a little slow for me as I kept waiting for something more to happen. When I switched over to the audiobook, things moved along more quickly for me.
Billy has to get sneaky, something he isnt programmed for. He learns about an odd building somewhere in the wilds in between two Williamsport cities. Yep. All the cities have William in their name and everyone lives in the glorious country of Williamerica. Privately, this was all rather amusing to me since my husband is Bill. Ha!
OK, so Billy starts showing some initiative and the story gets more interesting. He stops to pee by the road and he happens to see this weird building (a windmill) and as he goes to investigate he finally comes across the cloneasaurus! Yes! Since this little guy is on the cover and in the title I really wanted to meet it. This reptile understandably freaks Billy out, since all animal life has been extinct for several generations of Williams. From there, Billy meets the William that made the cloneasaurus and then we finally get our one and only female, Willa.
The second half of the book was way more interesting than the first. Billy starts looking at the top of the hierarchy and how he can go on living. Hes also fascinated with Willa and some awkward conversations occur which are amusing to the reader but rather embarrassing for Billy. Hes never used his personal equipment for self gratification so hes in the dark about natural procreation.
I was a little disappointed that Willa didnt get a bigger role. Shes well read, educated in a biochemistry lab, raised by a man with radical political ideas. She has a lot of potential to be a force to change things.

Big Daddy Bostwick, iconic filmmaker of the '60s counter culture, his companion Isaac Stanton, artist and filmmaker of bygone days, and three journalists doing a retrospective on the men are caught up in a whirlwind of insanity when the Headhunters From Outer Space appear in Alvarado, Texas to gather talent.

Zed and Fred, the titular headhunters, are talent scouts of a sort, that show up in Alvarado, Texas to recruit talent from the the performers and artists that gather at the club of Big Daddy Bostwick, 60's counter-culture icon. Also there to do a piece on the legend are a cynical reporter, uptight editor and photographer from a major news publication. Hers is a war fought in the dark, and like all wars, it has been costly. Friends have died, others have soured, and the rebellion that started out so strongly has broken into two embittered camps. highway to kladderadatsch
this is the difficult third novel (after what originally was meant to be only a duology) but - damn! - does that shean boy knows how to tell a story ... herding the desperate narrative threads through canyons & cross rivers [SIC] meanwhile piecemeal & steady fleshing out the characters, enhancing & diverting their personal histories, enriching their social identities & intersections ... a more than promising set up to what i can only imagine to be the ultimate kladderadatsch in "the disfigured city" !
    Good, but not great.
I need to start by saying I was given a free copy for review purposes.
I'm not sure where to start with this book. I really liked "shadow of a dying star", and was looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Shean has great world building skills, and is excellent at creating a dark and moody atmosphere. However, I can't deny this book has its problems.
Again, this book was full of spelling and punctuation errors. While i am willing to look past this in the works a self published author, the fact this was published Curiosity Quills makes me more critical.
In this Shean departs from his usual single narrator approach, and uses two alternating points of view. While one of these points of view is solid, the other comes off as less focused.
Lack of focus is an overall problem for this book. The first two books in this series had nice, simple, mysteries that slowly unfolded, this one felt more like a series of events that just kind of happened. The only goals the characters are working towards are vague and nebulous. This is not helped by the cliff hanger ending. Instead of being eager to read more, I'm left feeling frustrated nothing was resolved.
I can't give this book a lower rating though. For its problems, it does have its charm.

Enjoyable story that picks up steam as the story unfolds. In fact, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Good performance by the narrator. I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.
    Interesting
I received this book without obligation from the narrator.
What I enjoyed about this book was the get in late scenario, there was no messing about with this storyline and it was very easy to follow and unfolded really well. The plot revolved around some great 3d characters who each had so much depth and backstory that it affected the outcome of the book and really made you feel for them. Great job on the suspense and mystery surrounding this story. I did think maybe it could have been longer, because I enjoyed it a lot, and I hope that this isn't going to be the only book with these characters, it seems there's so much scope that it would be a shame if so. The world building and ideas in here support most A.I stories, that I've had the pleasure of reading or listening to, yet it didn't seem over-worked or contrived.
The narrator has a great tone to his voice for this genre, deep and gritty, which suited the MC and I found myself getting lost within the world. The different character voices were unique enough that I didn't need tags to know who was doing the talking, great job.
I look forward to more from both writer and narrator, thank you for letting me listen in.
"Cheap hoods make the world go round, Sweetness."
    Any additional comments?
One the day that his sister is ambushed and killed and Noah Carver is himself seriously wounded, the announcement is broadcast that most synthetics will be given equal rights with the human population.
Time passes. Noah buries his memories in a bottle - many bottles - but accepts a job to find the erstwhile partner of a failing magician, a Synthetic, who simply cannot hold the stage now that she has gone. He wants her back in his life again. An easy job, because Noah Carver knows exactly where to look .
An intriguing setting with it's hints of present day fears and prejudice, good character development and dialogue, and an exciting story. Complete in itself, it holds out the possibility of a continuation in a later book.
Initially, I found A.W.Salzman's narration hard to enjoy although his reading was flawless, I had difficulties relating to the cadences he employed in his reading. But this was soon forgotten as I became involved in the story and his telling of it, paced perfectly to match the text.
