    2/3's of the way
    Could not finish this book
I had a difficult time following the storyline because it jumped from one topic to another without explanation or conclusion of one thread before starting another. There was some interesting info about why the U.S. went off the gold standard but then the author went off on a tangent about Egypt's King Farouk and after pages of unnecessary descriptions, I said enough is enough. I suppose if I had stuck with it that the plot might have twisted back upon itself to explain how it tied in with the initial whodunit, but I'm too old to waste time like that.

    Excellent!
I first read this book a few years ago when I borrowed it from my local library. I was absolutely thrilled when I found it was available on audible. The narration and the plot are both first rate and had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I hope that the entire series will be available from audible soon, unabridged naturally, the writing is too good to miss out on any of it.

WW2, Russian spies. Beautiful women! What's not to like?
John Lawton is a fabulous storyteller and his hero, Frederick Troy a very believable and likable character. To make it even more interesting his stories are set against the backdrop of World War 2. We have murder during the London blitz and like Foyle of 'Foyle's War', Troy is not about to let the war intervene in ensuring that justice is done and the guilty are punished. He is the youngest son of Russian emigres who fled revolutionary Russia in 1905 and now live in relative privilege in England. His older brother is an MP. In this the second novel starring Troy, he is up against two very strong women who each hold deep fascination for him in terms of their positions, the danger of involvement with them because of the dubious company they keep and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want. Like all detective heroes, Troy gets his fair share of knocks to the head and bullets to the body. The intrigue and suspense will keep you hooked. Don't just get this one, download the whole series of which there are seven. If you like your detective fiction to have an historical context with all the extra intrigue of espionage and a hero who won't give up, then you won't be disappointed.
    Seriously good..
This is the second 'Troy' I've read and I am ruing the fact that I have started them out of order as there are recurring characters and I knew what happened to several in this book as I had come across them before but anyway this is a great spy novel.
It starts with the discovery of a divers body that is believed to have been spying on a Russian ship in an English Harbour (loosely based on Buster Crabbe), Troy is brought in by the deceased diver's wife to prove that he is still alive.
From this the story branches out into international politics, corrupt Special Branch officers with Russian, American and UK Spies. Again lots of violence, the attention to detail by Lawton is stunning. He goes to the effort of describing what a railway workers voice sounds like even though the character has three words in the entire book.
Cover blurbs compare Lawton to Le Carre, I wouldn't say he was Le Carre's equal or close if you compare this book with the Smiley trilogy but he's very very good and I'm amazed he's not a top seller. Lawton is so much better than 95% of what are decribed as top thriller writers. Next please.

Loved the twisting storyline and the moral dilemma it gets you thinking about. Well paced and well read.
    Really enjoyed
I really enjoyed this book once I realised that two stories ran concurrently duh! Not my usual sort of thriller but still worth a read/listen.
    Great story
Really enjoyed this book, however was a little disappointed with the ending. I thought it would have more of a position on right vs wrong.

Length: 3 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-07-17
    Publisher: Magic Lamp Productions
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
The case involved in this Peter Sharp adventure is a dramatic escalation of the jury-tampering attempts made by organized crime back in the roaring 20's when one of their leaders' freedom was in jeopardy, in that it goes a step higher and threatens not a juror, but the judge hearing the case.
It doesn't matter to these criminals that the jury will determine guilt or innocence of the accused, because this defendant on trial is also an attorney, and he is aware of the fact, that in this jurisdiction, a judge has the power to set aside a jury's guilty verdict, and find the defendant innocent.
The usual warnings are given as to bringing the authorities into this threat, and the judge takes them seriously enough to follow that demand, leaving very few choices for a safe, favorable solution, that also brings justice to the culprits.
The clock is ticking and time is running out as the conclusion of the trial is rapidly approaching, so attorney Peter Sharp is forced into drastic action to defeat this hostage situation, and its attempt to extort an acquittal of the attorney on trial.
Thanks to assistance from an unbelievable source, Peter may have found the clue to where his plan should be put into effect so that the situation might be resolved satisfactorily, but you'll be sitting on the edge of your seat as this thrilling adventure come to an end, complete with an undercover operation, the FBI, and Peter Sharp, unexpectedly armed and dangerous.
This is surely one the most exciting of all the cases in this series of 20 books that Gene Grossman has written, that chronicle the adventures of attorney Peter Sharp, his 13-year-old computer-genius legal ward Suzi, and Peter's bitter ex-wife Myra - the top District Attorney prosecutor of Los Angeles County.

    The Reluctant Reviewer . . .
I had never read or listened to any of the other Peter Sharp Legal Mysteries, but even if I had, I would find it difficult to imagine that it would have made a difference as to my level of interest and enjoyment of this title. I found both the story-line and character development to be very shallow (perhaps said characters are fully developed in earlier installments) which prevents this work from being a standalone listen. Aside from that, I certainly would not classify this as a legal thriller and/or mystery as the outcome was pretty transparent and, despite a kidnapping of sorts, I found little I would consider thrilling in the story.
The one redeeming quality of the title was the narration of Richard Rieman, whose work I previously enjoyed in the Joe Rubinstein Story of Auchwitz. In this case Rieman did what I thought was a great job in trying to add some enthusiasm to a rather unimaginative story. In fact, if not for the narration, I probably only would have given this overall listen 1-star.
I do not think I am one to be overly critical, but I was asked to submit an honest review and, with some reluctance, here you have mine. A review copy of this audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in return for this unbiased review.

The Gypsy Twist is great !
I hope there are more Max Royster tomes in the pipeline because The Gypsy Twist was a gem of a story, and Max is quite a guy. Originally from Manhattan's Upper East Side ("The Playpen"), and having spent his youth among its toney preppy denizens, Max, decades later, is a worn and streetwise cop with a penchant for confounding his superiors and charming his colleagues as he solves major crimes. It takes a writer who is native to Manhattan's meter and moves to get New York and its ambiguities as does Mr. Hickey. His police procedure is flawless and Max is a one-of-a-kind world weary we haven't seen before in the genre. What an enjoyable read ! Thank you, Mr. Hickey !
Coast to Coast with Max Royster By Peter Bordonaro
The Gypsy Twist by Frank Hickey, a âpolicierâ as the French would have it, at first appears to be a pulp example of a not-always respected genre. After not more than a couple of pages, though, a reader realizes that this novel stands apart from those with similar subject matter. Distinguished by both its readability and its authenticity, The Gypsy Twist is a gem of a page-turner. Its authenticity stems not only from Hickeyâs experience as both a private eye and a cop, but also from his lifetime of observing people, places, and things in the neighborhoods where the story takes place. I particularly enjoyed the San Francisco section where the characters and not-so-familiar setting created a genuine sense of intrigue.
Hickeyâs intelligence and superior education are evident on every page, but what keeps you reading is his talent as a writer. Max sees much that is ugly, but Hickey describes it all beautifully. Hickey is also a screenwriter, and the action here often moves like that of a movie. The Gypsy Twist is only one of several Max Royster mysteries. We are lucky to have them.
Max Royster is a fresh, unique, quirky character
Max Royster became an NYPD patrol officer at the advanced age of 42. He is an enigma to many of his fellow officers, as well as to his commanding officers. He enjoys bellowing about wanting cash and spends time at the bar across the street from his precinct house in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where he calls the regulars at the bar the
"Budweiser tribe. The orange-haired, pink-faced Irishers who always wear either bright kelly green or hairy gray tweed. Or football jerseys. Who bellow and stomp around the local saloon like young prize whiteface bulls. Cops. Or priests. Con Edison workers, bus drivers or firemen. Irishers all. When you get older, you grow beautiful heads of silver and white hair. You can always see the tribesmen on St. Paddy's day. Or at Topsy's here, sucking down those Budweisers so that the tribes carries on."
The storyline revolves around the vicious murder in Central Park of a young boy who attended St. Blaise's School, a private school on the Upper East Side, or as Max calls it, 'the Playpen'.

    Title: Courting Death

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 56 mins

    Release date: 06-06-17
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
From an internationally recognized law professor comes the third legal thriller in an exciting mystery series, the Clarkeston Chronicles.
Courting Death finds Melanie Wilkerson (from Cotton, book two of the Clarkeston Chronicles) and Arthur Hughes working uncomfortably together in the chambers of a famous federal judge. While Melanie neglects her duties as a law clerk to investigate the mysterious death of a young woman in the courthouse five years earlier, Arthur wades through the horrific habeas corpus appeals of two prisoners: an infamous serial killer and a pathetic child murderer.
Melanie, a Georgia native who returns from law school in the Northeast, hoped to establish a legal reputation that will eclipse her beauty pageant queen past, which she is now desperate to disown. Arthur is a bright but naive Midwesterner who is rapidly seduced by the small Georgia college town of Clarkeston which, to his surprise, comes with an exotic and attractive landlady. The cohort of federal court clerks is completed by Phil Jenkins, a Stanford graduate from San Francisco who tries his best to balance the personalities of his volatile colleagues.
Living and working in bucolic Clarkeston comes with a price. In Courting Death, Arthur, Melanie, and Phil are confronted with the extremes of human mortality, both in and outside the legal system, in ways that they could never have expected or prepared for.

Quite well written and plotted. Law, morality, philosophy, music, a murder and some sex as well. I recommend it without reservation.

    Death, in many forms.
Loved this book, the author is hitting his stride. Look out Grisham, Clarkston Chronicles are terrific.
Suspend Your Expectations With Regard To Genre (And Enjoy).
This is an interesting addition to the Clarkeston Chronicles series. Some are disappointed that it is not more of a mystery story. In that regard, caveat emptor. This is much more of a mainstream novel. One reviewer on Amazon calls it a coming of age novel. That is close, but imprecise, since all of the characters in an ensemble cast are adults in their mid-20âs and beyond. I think of the book as a part of a large patchwork, with the setting as unifying element. In that regard it is a gutsy book, because it assumes that the readers will want to return to Clarkeston again and again, regardless of the specific time frame and the specific cast of characters.
Courting Death is set in 1988-9. Three young lawyers are serving a clerkship with a prominent federal judge. The first, Melanie Wilkerson, is a former beauty queen. The second, Phil Jenkins, has a real problem: he doesnât believe in capital punishment. The third, Arthur Hughes, is the protagonist in the story. When he comes to Clarkeston he falls in love with his late 20âs landlady who has an infant daughter who is a real charmer. At the same time he goes out drinking with Phil and is tempted by Melanie. All three are mentored and dominated by the nameless judge who carries secrets of his own. Both Arthur and Phil are bedeviled by some of the cases with which they must deal and Melanie is drawn into an unsolicited investigation of the death of a former clerk.
In other words, this is a complex mainstream novel that principally deals with the private lives of the members of the ensemble cast.

    Objection not quite overruled.
Interesting story and an unusual initial premise, but let down by poor/lazy character development. Some nice twists and turns, but becomes a little formulaic towards the end. The denouement was far fetched.
The narrator does a good enough job, but a couple of the secondary characters sounded quite similar. Made the classic audiobook mistake of reading out all the "he said/she saids". An out-take has also been accidentally left in, immediately followed by the re-read.
A decent enough listen, but no cigar.
    Great characters..
... which I hope to meet again. Legal labyrinth meets Greek tragedy. Great stuff - thank you!
    Engaging
A good mix of action scenes and legal scenes that kept my attention. Well narrated. Wasn't so keen on the ending which seemed a bit too contrived.
    Good story line
Another great story and very good narration. Can't wait to start next book.

    Publisher: Magic Lamp Productions
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
There are many types of mysteries, but one specific group stands apart from all the others: those involving a locked room in which a dead body is found...a room that would have been impossible for any person to have entered, committed the murder, and left - because of locked doors, locked windows, or other security devices making the entry and exit impossible.
Over the years every mystery writer worth his salt has tried to come up with the one that tops all the others: the secret compartments, doors locked from the inside, confused timelines, etc. It's all been tried over and over.
Jacques Futrelle set the standard with his "Problem in Cell 13", John Dickson Carr raised the bar with his The Hollow Man, and in this one Gene Grossman throws his hat into the ring, not with a mystery taking place in a locked room but with one that takes place in a room with an open door - but an apparently invisible murderer.
Because of the high-profile guests in attendance at this affair, there were a number of security guards both inside and outside of the property, all attesting to the fact that nobody entered or exited the deceased's study for at least 20 minutes before everyone heard the fatal assumed suicide gunshot - and all guests at this party, including the chief of police and district attorney, believe that there can be no other logical conclusion but suicide...at least everyone but a 12-year old amateur detective with a brain that many have likened to that of Sherlock Holmes: little Suzi, attorney Peter Sharp's legal ward. So hang on as she battles the adults to prove her case.
