Is it right that the growth opportunities of businesses are determined by the vagaries of the finance markets. Companies wanting to raise debt through bonds or bank loans face higher costs right now because of the rise in interest rates. Someone with a great idea could be held back because of the cost of borrowing. Whether its borrowing or issuance of equity businesses will find an increasing chunk of their earnings are being fed to the finance sector. Increasingly, a sector that minimises risks by only lending to companies supported by assets. Phil and Steve discuss whether there a role for the government to be more involved in developing a higher-risk, lower cost approach to loans.
