In our penultimate volcano episode, we explore the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington State. It's lucky that it was a weekend and lucky that the land was mainly used for foresting, otherwise, the devastation could have been in the tens of thousands of lost lives like we've seen.

November 13, 2023 Ep 65 - Engineering Disasters Part 2: Tragedy in Bhopal
This week, Farz takes us to 1980s Bhopal, India, where thousands of people were poisoned by the air outside of a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Bhopal Disaster. It's just what you think might happen. The buck was passed over and over again, but essentially, water got into a gas tank, and the tank leaked; clouds of poison chased people and animals around the town leaving many dead and many more hurt for life.
If you google it you will see some really terrible images that we didn't include. That's on you.

Join us as Farz starts a terrifying journey into engineering disasters. Starting with the 1981 collapse of the Skywalk at the Kansas City Hyatt. During an evening dance in the lobby on July 17, two suspended walkways collapsed onto each other. One hundred fourteen people lost their lives, soaking the lobby in blood and becoming the worst structural disaster in the US until 9/11.
What went so wrong? Who is to blame? Is it the engineers? Kansas City? Is it Hallmark, somehow?
(Also, we made it through this entire episode without mentioning Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce! But Taylor did sing 'Everything's up to date in Kansas City', who doesn't love an 80-year-old cultural reference!)

Webster's Dictionary defines a 'Maniac' as "a person who behaves in a wildly foolish, reckless, or dangerous manner." And boy, do we have a story about some maniacs for you! In 2007, in Ukraine's 4th largest city, three young men went on the fastest murder spree we've ever heard of. Apparently, it's possible to see one of their murders that they filmed, "Three Guys - One Hammer," but we haven't seen it and don't recommend it. Join us for this horror story today on "Doomed to Fail."
(Also, incidentally, Dnepropetrovsk is now called Dnipro, and you should read its Wikipedia page because it's fascinating. There's Catherine the Great, Many Occupations, two train bombs in 2007, nuclear weapon stockpiles, and in 2023 it's been bombed by Russia).
