Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) sprint off after ghosts in the jungle in their quest to make sense of “White Rabbit,” the fifth hour of ABC’s LOST.
In the latest Down the Hatch, Josh and Mike follow the good doctor Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox), who stands front and center in his very first flashback episode. After shaking up the format of the podcast a little bit (see if you notice!) but not enough to impact the time limit (cue the wheel spin!), Josh and Mike dig deep into Jack’s emotional experience reconciling with the death of his father and the weight of their tense relationship, how those themes impact not only that character and the series at large but the podcasters themselves, and much more.
A refresher on the plot of “White Rabbit” …
In “White Rabbit,” Jack embarks on a race through the forest after laying eyes upon his father, Christian Shephard (John Terry). Only one problem with that: Christian died in Sydney, days before Oceanic 815 took flight. Jack’s bewildered trek through the island sees him recalling his turbulent past with his father, hanging off a cliff and hanging onto his sanity. On both of those latter counts, Jack finds help in the form of John Locke (Terry O’Quinn), the men of faith and science engaging in a conversation that is quietly one of the best scenes in all of LOST.
Back at the beach camp, water becomes a critical issue as a woman drowns in the ocean and the rest of the survivors’ drinking supply dwindles down to nothing — first because of their own drinking needs, and then because “some git nicked it,” as Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) puts it. The thief in question: Boone (Ian Somerhalder), who steps in for Sawyer (Josh Holloway) as the most hated man on the beach. But before everyone can eviscerate Boone, in comes Jack with the iconic “live together die alone” speech, a phrase that echoes throughout LOST forever more from that moment onward.
“White Rabbit” was directed by Kevin Hooks and written by Christian Taylor. It first aired on October 20, 2004.
About Down the Hatch …
LOST: Down the Hatch is a full-tilt spoiler-filled rewatch of LOST. Every week, Josh and Mike break down an episode of LOST with the benefit of knowing the series’ full trajectory, using the following structure as a guide:
Each episode of Down the Hatch clocks in at no less than 42 minutes. If it clocks in at longer than 108 minutes, Josh and Mike have triggered a crisis! Consequences may (and almost certainly will) ensue thanks to the Frozen Donkey Wheel.

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) crash land into the roles of two Oceanic 815 survivors in the first episode of LOST Down the Hatch Presents: Tales From The Island, “Autopilot.”
Over the course of Down the Hatch, Josh and Mike will periodically transform the podcast into a full-on tabletop roleplaying game, ala Dungeons and Dragons. The mystical and mysterious R Filly (@Wharfrat1625) joins them in the role of dungeon master, presiding over Josh and Mike’s myriad misadventures and playing the roles of various non-playable characters in this full-on fan-fiction flurry of events from LOST.
In “Autopilot,” we open on an eye, because of course we open on an eye — but it’s not just any eye. The eye belongs to Billy Wallace (Wigler), a one-eyed man with an axe to grind against anyone and everyone who doesn’t recognize his greatness. Among those people: Rodney “Roundhouse” Cesteau (Bloom), the hot-not-cute model type who comes to the supernatural beach with a surprising amount (and source) of island experience.
Despite the shared trauma and miracle of surviving the Oceanic 815 crash together, Billy and Rodney don’t exactly see eye to eye right away, on a few levels. But further experiences will bond their journeys together, as they come to learn they have more in common than they realize — not the least of which is their relative isolation from the greater group of survivors.
The events of “Autopilot” chronicle the first four hours of LOST, from the initial crash in the two-part “Pilot” through the memorial service of “Walkabout.” Along the way, Billy and Rodney will meet a woman dressed in stripes, an old police officer from upstate New York, a mysterious stranger in the “Forest,” a food-hoarding survivor, a surprising creature from the jungle, and more.
All of these characters collide in a fully ridiculous installment of Post Show Recaps Theater, which — it bears repeating — is outright fan fiction, and probably not for everyone. If it’s not your cup of tea, move right along to the next recap episode! If you’re a fan, however, Josh, Mike and Rich will resume Tales from the Island at an unknown point in the future. As always, send feedback to [email protected].

Down the Hatch hosts Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) embark on “Walkabout,” the iconic LOST episode centering on Terry O’Quinn as John Locke.
In their conversation, Josh and Mike break down Locke’s coming out party, as the knife-wielding box man breaks free from his shell and hits the ground running in more ways than one. There are many who cite “Walkabout” as one of the very finest episodes of LOST, if not the number one contender on the board. Where do Josh and Mike land on the issue? They do a deep dive into what makes both the episode and Locke as a man so special, introduce a new segment to the podcast, and once again inevitably spin the Frozen Donkey Wheel as they far exceed the 108 minute time limit — with zero regrets, one might add. Don’t ever tell us how long we can podcast about LOST, ever!
A refresher on the plot of “Walkabout” …
Boars! It’s a full-on invasion of pigs at the crash site of Oceanic 815, requiring the survivors to burn the bodies of the dead in order to keep the island’s local predators away. The pigs arrive at an opportune time, just as the survivors start running out of food. Enter: John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) and his briefcase loaded with knives, as he posits a plan to trap the piglets and kill them for sustenance. Locke’s trek through the jungle goes awry when he and the others cross paths with the dreaded Monster — but miraculously, Locke lives to tell the tale, returning to the beach just in time for dinner and a memorial service.
In a flashback, we learn even more about the miracles surrounding John Locke — specifically, the fact that he was once paralyzed, and is now able to walk again thanks to the mythical healing properties of the island. How this is possible, or what it means for Locke’s future, is as unknown as the monster that lurks in the jungle — but of course, those who have watched the series in its entirety know all too well that Locke’s fate and the monster’s identity are tied in darker ways than one could have ever imagined.
“Walkabout” was directed by Jack Bender and written by David Fury. It first aired on 10/13/2004.

LOST: Down the Hatch hosts Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) wipe their slates clean as they discuss the third hour of the series, “Tabula Rasa.”
In their conversation, Josh and Mike assess the curious case of Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly), the character at the heart of the series’ first ever full-tilt flashback installment. Heading out of “Pilot,” Kate enters the second Down the Hatch recap as the leading contender in the MVP category. Will that lead hold following her first flashback episode, or will someone come and steal her thunder? And how will Josh and Mike fare with the 108 minute time limit now that they are finally eligible for an electromagnetic crisis? Listen to the podcast for the answer — or check your time stamp for the spoiler.
A refresher on the plot of “Tabula Rasa” …
After intercepting the mysterious French Woman’s transmission, Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly) and others on the jungle journey decide they must lie to the other survivors about what they have just learned: they are not alone on this island. But Kate has more immediate concerns, and an even bigger personal lie to maintain: her status as a fugitive, a secret she keeps from everyone. Of course, it’s not a secret to Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox), nor is it a secret to the ill-fated marshal Edward Mars (Fredric Lehne).
In a flashback, we learn about Kate’s life in the months prior to landing on the island — and because Josh and Mike are ridiculous, the one-armed man Ray Mullen earns a brand new nickname.
“Tabula Rasa” was directed by Jack Bender and written by Damon Lindelof. It first aired on 10/6/2004.

The LOST: Down the Hatch rewatch begins right here, right now, as Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) head back to the island and all the way back to the two-part series premiere, “Pilot: Part 1 + Part 2.”
In a sprawling conversation that spans over three hours, Josh and Mike dig into every nook and cranny (okay, not every nook and cranny) of “Pilot,” with topics including the ways in which the opening minutes mirror the series finale, some tin-foil hat attempts to explain the monster’s motivations, the iconic ending and the “where are we” of it all, and so much more.
A refresher on the plot of “Pilot” …
LOST opens on an eye — because of course it opens on an eye. Spinal surgeon Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) wakes up in a bamboo forest, and soon finds himself helping others who have survived the sudden plane crash of Oceanic 815. Jack meets Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly), an unassuming survivor who is secretly a fugitive from the law, and the two of them join washed-up rocker Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan) on a mission to find the cockpit deep in the jungle. There, they encounter a vicious monster who kills the pilot and thoroughly horrifies our heroes.
The second half of the episode centers on Kate and Charlie joining fellow survivors Sawyer (Josh Holloway), Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and Shannon (Maggie Grace) on another trek through the island, hoping to reach high enough ground to send out a distress signal. Instead, they discover a distressing signal: a radio broadcast from a woman who has been trapped on the island for more than 16 years. “Guys, where are we” indeed. Oh, and there’s a polar bear — because of course there’s a polar bear.
“Pilot” was directed by J.J. Abrams, story by Jeffrey Lieber, Abrams and Damon Lindelof, with teleplay by Abrams and Lindelof. It aired on two separate nights: 9/22/2004 and 9/29/2004. Flashbacks center on Jack, Charlie and Kate, telling the tale of Oceanic 815’s crash from their points of view.
