Reminiscent of Phantom of the Opera with a Twist

I enjoyed listening to this book and would rate it at 4 1/2 stars. The author, Linda Rae Sande has a smooth writing style and it kept me interested. The story moved along well and featured scarred characters that needed healing. His Grace with half a face was the moniker that the Duke was given due to physical scars. This book is a standalone listen and part of a series. I thought the narrator did a very good performance. He was able to put so many expressions and emotions into his performance. This book has plenty of steam along with some great characters, and some unexpected humor. I received this book as a gift and have voluntarily written this review.

This story was way too long

It was a struggle to finish. I increased the speed of the narrative aan# still nodded off. The Ending Was Rushed. the story ended like a Korean soap opera. the rich bad guys either commit suicide or all is forgiven.

Incredible Narration

I love Theron because he is so understanding and patient.

Michael Rahal does a fantastic job of capturing Theron Drake. I love that he portrays this character as a soft spoken man of strength and character.

Not for me

I made it through the first hour, but it felt too much like a checkers game that wanted to be a chess match. The dialogue just didn't seem to fit the period, and I can't imagine any single young woman meeting a man for dinner like the heroine did. Too much of what I heard had modern sensibilities and it was jarring.

Very good story. Fantastic Narration!!!

This was a very good story, and the narration was amazing! I love Carolyn Morris' narrations.

I really enjoyed the hero Taylen very much. He was damaged, but kind. He was sexy, smart and handsome. I liked Lucinda too, she was a strong female heroine. She made a little mistake in her memory LOL but it worked out. These two made a great couple. The chemistry was good and felt real and not forced. There is a nicely written sex scene, not over the top or crude.

The story line was good and I enjoyed it. No real mysteries or villains or anything like that really. Just a good story. There was lots of dialogue throughout the entire book, which was great.

As for the narration. Well Carolyn Morris is one of my very very very favorite narrators for historical romance books. She does a good job on the male voices, everyone gets their own distinct voice and her reading voice is so nice to listen too. She reads with emotion as called for. Just love her!

Attention Holder

I was amazed at how gripping this tale is with quite a bit less dialog than most. It Facebook insight into viking daily life in their settlements and how they dealt with every day living while also providing some excellent battle scenes. The main theme of the narrative kept moving forward to a satisfying but open conclusion leaving hope that a sequel will follow.

A fantastic, action packed Viking epic

A fantastic, action packed Viking epic. I could not put this book down it was so easy to read and exciting. It had everything, interesting and loveable characters, exciting battles, humour, love, heartbreak. Some parts had me on the edge of my seat, some parts had me laughing and some parts made me cry. It's an interesting and enjoyable insight into Viking life. The story follows the life and loves of Leif and his Viking settlement as they try to recover his father's stolen ship and avenge his murder by those who wear the cross! The narrative is so wonderfully descriptive it makes you feel as you are there in that era and you get to know all the characters so well you have feelings for each of them and laugh and cry along with them. Really looking forward to a sequel.

Epic Viking Romantic Story

2 Quick Romances

I wanted to like this story more. I didn't hate it but it was kind of a light read. There just didn't seem enough time to really connect with the MC's. There seemed to barely be time for them to connect. That they were shy and sort of cautious with each other made perfect sense of course. The comparison between her coming from poverty and his having wealth was well done too. Both of the stories were clean, quick reads for adults and probably good enough for older children too. Maybe pre-teens, would be okay with both of them.

The Bonus book was called,"The Sweet Texas Cowboy."

I would like to give kudos for the book cover choice.. I liked it and thought it was really appealing.

Sweet Story

It's such a pleasure to listen to a book that has appealing characters, a romance that is clean, a plot that's not too predictable and narration that fits the story. Each book in this series is about 4 hours long so they make a great afternoon listen.

This particular book in the series is the story of Nathaniel and Katia. I have to admit the first chapter describing Katia's family gave a tear to my eye. This delightful story shows the difficulties and sacrifices they made in the name of love and commitment. I recommend this book to all ages.

The narrator does a really good job with this series. He's got a great "western" quality to his voice. There were a few production or editing errors however. A few times there were noises......it actually sounded like airplanes flying in the background. Lol. But despite that, it was a very enjoyable listen.

Heart warming and sweet

Heartwarming and unique

It was great to have read the first story first. Although the story focuses on Nathaniel Russell; the writer kept you up with the rest of the characters, especially Pryor and Moira. They are an important part of the story as well as the unexpected plot twist involving Nathaniel and Katia.

The story itself was kinda unique; although I can relate. Being in a foreign country unable to speak the language has its disadvantages. Falling in love at first sight can be overwhelming when you can't communicate. Writer Amelia Rose did a wonderful job making it work.

Between their many hard shores and struggles, everyone was willing to work together and help each other. It was heartwarming and at times heart wrenching the situations brought by language barriers.

Narration by Charles D. Baker was once again magnificent. I enjoyed the clean voice, the tones, the emotions in the characters. Made the story come alive. Yes, I love him as an actor!

Fun, light, entertaining and enjoyable. A story that just makes you feel good when it's all said and done. This is just a clean, sweet romance with a little mystery.

This is the 2nd book of the series but the first book I have listened to. Each story in the series can be read as a stand alone.

Nathaniel has done what many men on the frontier did and contracted for a Mail Order Bride. Unexpectedly when she arrives she cannot speak English and this throws an unexpected curve into the mix. Along with the communication barrier Katia has a secret.

Mail Order Bride....with a Twist.

This is a sweet and enjoyable Mail Order Bride Story. Samuel is a lonely widower who is in need of a wife to help care for his little daughter. He answers an advertisement for a Mail Order Bride and Hannah responds to his letter. This sweet clean story has some twists and kept my interest throughout. I recommend this book to all who enjoy a good heartfelt story with good narration.

Good Story, But...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. Although it had a good storyline I was disappointed. I think with another narrator and less detail shown to the mundane I would have enjoyed it. It had unnecessary detail on what they had to eat and what they were wearing for such a short story (3 1/2 hours), in my opinion. Although the narrator was an articulate speaker, she lacked something. I felt her reading was unemotional and I did not feel connected to the characters.

What other book might you compare Hannah: Bride of Iowa to and why?

To other "Mail Order Bride" books. The subject matter is mail order brides, just different circumstances leading to becoming a mail order bride, different characters and storylines. I usually like "Mail Order Bride" books.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Emma Lysy?

I don't think so.

Was Hannah: Bride of Iowa worth the listening time?

I hate to say it, but it was not to me.

Any additional comments?

I believe it would have been an enjoyable story with a more passionate narrator. Some narrators have the ability to draw me into the story and make me feel a personal connection to the characters, this one did not. I was happy when it ended.

Great story

Loved this take on the mail order brides. I liked how it worked out for everyone. It was a good story and told in such terms that you knew what was happening without it being shoved down your throat.One lady changes identity with another. they both choose different paths and face adversity. Yet in the end they both find love. This is a good feel good story that will keep you listening until the end. Well worth the credit and the narrator did justice to all of the characters.

Cute story

The story is very cute. It has more than a few surprises and suspenseful moments so I couldn't put it down. The characters are wonderful. I have only two small complaints.

Short, clean, unexpected love

What made the experience of listening to The Governess' Debut the most enjoyable?

The vocal performance gave depth to a book that was short and somewhat shallow in character development and plotting.

If youve listened to books by Wendy May Andrews before, how does this one compare?

I am unfamiliar with Wendy May Andrews' work. I noticed historically inaccurate language/speech, but it didn't distract from the plot.

Have you listened to any of Eugenie Watsons other performances before? How does this one compare?

I really enjoyed Eugenie Watson's vocal performance. She brought the characters to life with consistency, painting pictures for me with her voice. This is the first of her performances that I have had the pleasure to experience.

Any additional comments?

I liked the match making mama aspect, especially since it was the Earl's mother pushing them together. I thought the ending came rather abruptly, with minimal conflict or angst, and no satisfactory grovel to back up the Earl's declaration of live.

Enjoyable to read!

These books are about a " Freedom Bride Program" where the prisoners could be released from jail if they married women who needed husbands to take care of them, mainly women who had lost their husbands due to death or for some other reason. The women had children who needed a father as well, so as in the other books Aida contacted the sheriff about a man named Trey. Trey and Aida were married against her father's wishes as he wanted her to marry Franklin whom Aida didn't love and wanted nothing to do with him. This is the reason for wanting to marry Trey. As the story unfolds it keeps you wanting to keep reading. There are only nine or ten chapters which makes for easy reading. The story has some twists and turns and keeps you glued to your seat! Enjoyed reading "Free to Forgive."

An Absolute Winner

Aida needs to forgive both the man who betrayed her by disappearing before their wedding and her father who blocked her marriage to him. God has worked in Trey's life to enable him to forgive himself for abandoning the woman he loved, now He helps Aida find a way to forgive. You'll have a blast reading how the truth comes out and how it really is better to leave vengeance to the Lord. This was a great conclusion to a fun western romantic series.

TRUE LOVEâS REVENGE

The story is part of the Texas Wildflowers Book series but will read as a standalone that was written by Leah Atwood and Susette Williams. This is a very short but sweet story of two people who were in love and planned to marry, but an evil man caused trouble and broke several hearts.

Trey Lawson has never stopped loving Aida Hollingsworth and she had loved him, now she is out for revenge. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Can true love triumph over evil? Will the truth of their separation be revealed and broken hearts mended? This has been a fun series and shared the message of forgiveness, second chances, and redemption.

Nice ending to a sweet series

Trey and Aida's story is a sweet and short love story about second chances and forgiveness.

Even though these books can all be read separately I recommend that you read all six but reading them out of order is not going to be confusing.
