Amazing summary book!

Well, this is such an interesting and helpful book to read! I have run across many in my life that struggle with anxiety. I think if we were honest, most of us do in one form or another, at different times in our lives. Overall, this is a great read for anyone going through a struggle and in need of hope. You should be able to complete title in a few sittings and come away with more encouragement and hope that is found only in Jesus.

Even An Atheist Likes It!

Let me preface my review with this: I am not religious and left Christianity years ago, but was raised in a far right church and was apart of it for about 25 years. That being said, about 2 years ago, my father-in-law printed out a blog post of his called "My emancipation from American Christianity" and it resonated so much within me. I am not a Christian anymore, but if I were going to believe in God, this would be the God that I believe in. This is the type of faith I want others to have. If you're going to believe in God, let it be one that is big. The Christianity I was raised was in is far too narrow, and there were the "them" (the sinners, obliviously) and then there were "us." (the ones who heard from God and had the RIGHT interpretation!) Shouldn't God be one that is big enough to allow for everyone. Flaws, perfect, big, small, ugly and all? There should be room for everyone at that table.

I love John's writing style and have been a frequenter of his blog for these last two years. I very much enjoy his authenticity, how he speaks openly and honestly about his journey of coming to "Build a Bigger Table". Regardless of where you fall in a spiritual journey, this is an excellent reminder that there is always room to build a bigger table.

I'm the mother of an LGBTQ child and his wisdom and gentle heart have been a rock to hundreds of us "mama bears" so I am glad that the world now gets to partake in the same goodness that we have appreciated. Wow! I know this couple from DA's time as lead elder in Kansas City, MO. I did not know them, however, in a very interpersonal way (totally my doing). From a far, they were the standard for me as to how my marriage should look. Hearing their testimony in this book leaves me with one expression, one of appreciation. They, through their transparency, have deepened my appreciation, not only for them, but for the person and work of Jesus Christ our Lord. My how Christ brings together his people by taking, as they frequently say, what is broken and making it whole! I love this couple so much. This book has provided me with much needed encouragement for my own marriage, because, unlike my flesh, the devil, and the world would accuse, my wife and I are battling some of the exact same issues. Yet, fight on they must and fight on I will. I will pass this book on to my children especially as they grow up unmarried, then going back to the beginning once they get married. The Horton's Transparency is Refreshing

This book is for everybody...married or single. Oftentimes, regardless of the area of our lives, we come across a person that we admire. Our own ambitions are sometimes derived from the life they live. However, we may feel that we could never reach their level of achievement. Sometimes, though, we don't know their background. We don't know what they went through to get to their position. This is not the case with D.A.and Elicia Horton. They opened up their lives to us. They walk you through their struggles. It was refreshing to realize that I was not the only one who has made this mistake or that mistake. It taught me that, with God, there is hope for me to not only have a gospel saturated relationship, but that I could lead a gospel saturated life.

I obtained this book because I wanted to study it as a historical document; I had paternal grandparents who were profoundly influenced by the "Second Great Awakening" of the 19th Century, in my grandmother's case quite probably through her mother. I wanted to understand the basis for their religious feeling and what seemed to me even as a child its remarkable ferocity. In Jonathan Edwards' classic sermon, I pretty much found what I was looking for. Vivid, almost-lurid description of eternal, infernal punishment of (from Edwards' standpoint) humanity's innate and inherited depravity, which just goes on and on.

I can recommend the book as an historical study while holding the theology it asserts in horrified opprobrium.

A Timeless Message

This sermon grants a splendid insight into one of the great minds of early America. The religious fervor of the Great Awakening is captured in full measure. Any understanding of the founding of the American Idea must include a deep knowledge of the Judeo-Christian beliefs and traditions brought from the Old World and re-energized with New World vibrancy by clergymen like Edwards, Cotton Mather and George Whitefield. The morality, self-discipline and pursuit of learning preached by these and countless other preachers was taken to heart by a vast majority of the founding populations of early America and was a crucial, sustaining factor in their success in establishing a civilization in the harsh wilderness

Worth reading

Good read. Interesting proposal of the Bible being compared to Jesus's incarnation. All analogies fall short, but this is a good perspective that keeps scripture in it's place as God's Word while explaining archaeology and historical discoveries. I especially liked the end when the author addressed critics responses to his thesis.

Intriguing to say the least

I felt like I had cold water thrown in my face. Peter Enn's book challenges me to read/interpret the bible honestly and at the same time explains why I see Christians debate and split over various miniscule issues. Refreshing.

An Irenic Solution to the Bible Wars

Some days you feel like the rope in a tug-of-war when you're a devout Christian with an interest in scholarship. From the right, the conservative school pulls mightily with inerrant force, insisting that you are sliding down the slippery slope to perdition if you think the Bible contains anything that cannot be upheld by the best in modern science and historiography. From the left, the modern scholarship team aims to win with cunning calculation, confident that well-aimed blows at the historical and scientific accuracy of the Bible will crumple the edifice of orthodox Christianity.

Into the contest steps Pete Enns, professor of biblical studies at Eastern University, with the observation that both sides do agree on something quite notable: they both agree on the premise that Holy Scripture should conform to modern standards of historical and scientific accuracy as proof of its truth and inspiration. But why, Enns insists, must we accept that premise? God incarnate was a Palestinian rabbi who fully participated in the culture of his day. He broke bread; he didn't slice it. He wore sandals, not wing tips. He never heard of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle nor learned the math behind the Schroedinger equation. And yet by faith we look past the rough exterior of Christ's earthly existence to see God's very presence in his marvelous life, death and resurrection. Likewise, says Enns, the Bible bears all the typical cultural marks of ancient middle Eastern Jewish writers. They did not have receive divine revelation in a cultural vacuum.

Beyond any expectations that I had.....the writing is excellent! This book opened new thoughts and brought me to an even deeper love and adoration of Jesus. Fantastic Read

I really enjoyed her take and prospective about Jesus hidden years. It is something we rarely discuss in our church's today. It brings hope and a renewed sense that our own personal hidden years are very important. I chose this book to take a look at what there is to learn from Christ's life in another light. I gave it 5 stars because the author speaks plainly and helps youy understand complex deep thoughts. It will refresh your soul and shed light on your own life from our prime example Christ.

Worth It!

Thank you Gail MacDonald! This book was given to me at just the right time, and I worked through it slowly. It could be a quick read, but I took it in one or two pages at a time because of the season I was in. The first few chapters were especially relevant to where I was in life. Awesome! Practical Explanation of the Two Greatest Commandments

Have you ever wondered what the greatest commandment really means? When you get down to the heart of the matter or the brass tacks, what does it really mean to love God? And how am I supposed to love Him with all of my heart, my soul, my mind, and my strength? And how about the 2nd commandmentâto love others as myself? What does that look like, in 21st century America (or wherever you live)?

Iâve heard countless sermons over my 35+ years of Christianity and all the years of Christian education, but I never quite heard the explanation to these commandments in as clear and understandable language as I did when reading Daniel Fuscoâs book âUpward, Inward, Outward.â

Jesus himself said that of all the commandments in the Bible, all 613 of them, these are the most important. So basically, all of Godâs instruction for you and I can be boiled down to two things â Love God, and love others in the same manner as we love ourselves.

Pastor Fusco divides the book into three movements, as suggested in the title. In the first movement, he breaks down into common language and understanding, what it truly means to love God through worship, prayer, solitude, and meditation.

One of my favorite quotes in this section goes like this, âGodâs joy does not depend on or ensure that everything works out perfectly. It isnât circumstantial. Godâs joy is the disposition of a heart that knows âit is well with my soulâ because God is God.

so I have both the book and the audible on the same title. What I've noticed is that the audible are a series of lectures that follow the book itself fairly closely. I think that together, they are very effective at helping me learn the material.
