Another Good Installment To The Series

In the much-anticipated sequel (to me, anyway) to Orphan X, Evan Smoak is back. Evan had been a part of the secret "Orphan" project, a project that took orphaned kids and made them into hardened assassins, sent in to do the jobs that the Government wanted "off the books'. Following the death of his mentor, Evan instead chose to work pro bono to help those desperately in need of his specialised services. The deal is, you call him, he solves your problem, then you have to give his number to someone else in need.

Following his most recent job of removing a lowlife human trafficker from the world, he realises that there is one more girl out there in the process of being shipped to a buyer. He knows he has to help her, but before he gets too far, he himself is kidnapped by a sociopath, hell bent on staying young and robbing as many people as he can. He identifies Evan through an online transaction and captures him for the purpose of forcing Evan to transfer a large amount of money. No one, except maybe Evan, realises the implications that this one action will bring about.

This is a nail-biting, action-packed thriller that keeps the plot twists coming right up to the last moments. I admit that I started to wonder whether Evan would actually make it out of captivity alive, with the odds so stacked against him, but I should never have underestimated his ingenuity.

Enjoyable fluff

It's good, but there are some glaringly obvious 'would never do's, for example holding a pine cone out on an outstretched palm for a sniper to shoot it out of your hand - and hoping he didn't take your hand off! Not as good as Victor The Assassin by Tom Wood, but having said that - I can't wait for book 3!

Gripping action, brilliant performance.

A thoroughly gripping story following on nicely from the last book. Not to worry if you haven't read the others, this fills in the important details in an entertaining way.

The action scenes are penned in a gripping style and the narrator's performance is 100% convincing. Highly recommend without reservation!

A gruelling tale

I'm exhausted - not only is Evan's traumatic life keeping me constantly on the edge of my seat but I also have to keep listening until it's finished which means bed is going to be in the morning not at night!

The story of the pathetic protagonist

The protagonist, a female prosecutor in her early 30s, lacks emotional maturity. The murder game is a legal thriller without the thrill, or maybe it's a suspense thriller without the suspense or the thrill. Author Catherine McKenzie bets everything on a surprise twist at the end, only the twist is not a surprise because she gave it away earlier.

Clever move McKenzie!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The Murder Game offers alternating time frames that allows readers to follow a set of characters back and forth from their social/learning time in law school to their professional roles in the courtroom. Personally, I didn't think that some of these characters' roles in legal proceedings were ethical or realistic because of their known histories together but it was entertaining nonetheless to follow the same characters throughout the entirety of the book. All the legal what-if scenarios processed by the characters in The Murder Game kept my brain active and thinking so this book was a win-win in terms of being an entertaining brain-teaser of sorts.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The resolution of the present-day courtroom drama was a bit of a let-down if I'm being honest. This could have been my fault though. I had this book built up so much in my head after the 5-star experience of Fractured so who knows. Check it out regardless! Catherine McKenzie (aka Julie Apple) is a rock star!

The Murder Game is a legal/thriller novel written over ten years ago by Catherine McKenzie. Although it remained unpublished for all of those years, the book itself was featured in Catherine McKenzie's 2016 novel: Fractured and inspired much of the storyline.

Poor quality in a mediocre genre..

What disappointed you about The Sphinx Scrolls?

Straight paragraphs lifted from the best of the pyramadiots books... and transferred willy nilly to South America - very little to do with the title. Poor understanding of the Maya civilsation. Very bad plot, poor 2 dimensional characters, the obligatory nazis - and no saving graces.. bad relic hunters with a poor vocabulary and an embarrassing script.. an insult to the reader/ listeners intelligence

Has The Sphinx Scrolls put you off other books in this genre?

No, just it should be put to the bottom of the pile, there are many others better and more thought provoking. This had no redeeming features and was an insult to a genre that doesn't have much going for it.

The deus ex machina reading of the Sphinx scrolls of the title in a crumbling mansion kitchen... the schrolls having been earlier destroyed, they are suddenly available in translation, much reduced, and edited and delivered by being selectively read out.. it encompasses both the best and the worst of the books.. and again, how on earth did it get by the editors? Shouldn't have been published/

Does no one need an agent these days? Is there no such thing as an editor.. and how are book buyers supposed to distinguish between writing and pulp fiction ..I paid for this rubbish...

Does no one need an agent these days. Some stuff should not be published.. in defense of the waste of ink and trees, never mind the poor people who try and read it, in all innocence.

The narrator should get a medal for ploughing through and delivering, straight faced and not hamming up the audible version.. and making a very poor narrative a mediocre book.. on audible..I would not recommend reading it, or listening to it, in anything other than ironic mode., or as a how not to...

Overall a good story but found it a little difficult to follow at times. A few loose ends but not sorry I bought it. Very interesting concept and ideas.

Another quality adventure by Michael Bond. A little heavy going and lacking the spontaneous charm of the earlier books. All the traditional characters reappear like the old favourites they are. Definitely not for children, adult material only.

Charming books full of little laugh and big laughs.

I've read all the books in this series... and I re-read them from time to time because I they are so entertaining and charming.

Different but as gripping as the first

A great story and like the first in the series it extremely well told. As the book went on I began to question the characters as they seemed to change from the last book. Imogen Grey seems to lose some of her strength and grit to the point you start to ask yourself if she is the same character. As the book goes on you have to suspend disbelief and accept the number of coincidences including the cliffhanger at the end!

immediately recognisable as just another very dull pot boiler/use of casual brutality to assault the reader/ a kind of frankenstein monster approach stitching together whatever comes to hand to create a crude approximation to a thriller.

Fast paced Edgy Thriller

The story a follow on from The Teacher, operates on two primary timelines; 2 years ago describing what happened to Imogen in Plymouth causing her move to Exeter, and a present day case with definite links to the Plymouth case. A well constructed story that starts with multiple fragments which like a jigsaw puzzle gradually link up to create the complete picture.

It is however a very dark book, black in places that may not be to everyones taste! Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the book I have marked the story down a star for two reasons. Firstly there are just far too many coincidences giving story a slightly implausible feel, and secondly because one or two of the violent scenes, in particular the country house hunt, in my opinion added nothing to the plot and were unnecessary

Stevie Lacey does a great job with the narration, with extremely good characterisations. She must be getting well used to the West Country burr given that she also narrates the Charlotte Savage series. Overall I recommend the book and look forward to Katerina Diamonds next offering.

Best Crime Thriller This Year!

Refreshingly unique, highly imaginative and highly satisfying to the very end!

I recommend this author, this novel and this narrator to be the best in the foreign category of psychological crime thrillers for this year. The translation gave the appearance of this being an American book. Bravo!

Interesting

I do enjoy Mr Miloszewski's books. Rage being the third I have read and as intricate as the other two. Not sure how I feel about the different endings. The very end in the original Polish and the translated book have left me a bit confused. Perhaps all my questions will be answered if there is a next book

The plot did keep me on the edge of my seat. I liked the characters and had a vested interest in their success. They were very realistic and though they were from a different culture and nation, their humanity made them easy to identify with. At one point I thought, "Oh, here we go - typical story line - and then, suddenly- it wasn't!"

Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?

First listen - but I enjoyed him.

Excellent start to a new series.

This book follows in the footsteps of quite a few vigilante protagonists that have come before with a very similar back story. Thomas Caine, he's ex CIA assassin, betrayed and now living off the grid in Thailand. He is loyal, has powerful connections, goes by an alias and although he has the skills, he wishes to remain anonymous but will intervene to right the wrongs that affect those he considers his friends. In this book there is a group of Russian mafia who are kidnapping young prostitutes with the intention of selling them into slavery. When one of Caine's friends (a bar girl/prostitute) goes missing he declares war on who ever took her.

This book has plenty of nonstop action and ends with a lead in to the next book in what is sure to become a really good series.

Although I have read some complaints about the narration I thought the narrator did a fine job and would most certain listen to him again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A Good, Straight Forward, Action Story.

Devils Due is a straight forward action story about former CIA agent, Thomas Caine. This short story is a prequel to Tokyo Black, book one in the Thomas Caine series. Living off the grid in Thailand after being betrayed by his agency, Thomas becomes embroiled in the affairs of human traffickers, the Russian mafia and a warlord who thinks hes the devil. If you like the action/suspense genre that features ex government agents and exotic locals then you should give Devils Due a read/listen.

Bryan L. Anderson does the narration for this story and for the most part, does a fine job, but there is, (at least on my audio copy), a strange effect that almost sounds like one of those devices that distorts the voice. Ive heard Mr. Andersons voice on another book that I own and although they are close, there is a difference. Maybe its the recording environment or the recording equipment used. Overall, it wasnt a deal breaker for me, but I did notice it.

Great start to a new series
