I love Brian Harmon's ideas / stories

I love Brian Harmon's ideas / stories, BUT..... the characters fail to really develop. The girls especially remain very superficial. I would ask Brian to at least extend his use of adjectives and maybe work in some developed figurative language. My challenge to him would be to write an entire book with a female character and not use the word 'pretty'. Pretty eyes. Pretty mouth. Pretty arms. Pretty tuft between the legs..... I am frustrated as the stories are great. and this many novels along this writing style should be improving.

A good sci-fi adventure.

Book 5 in the series of 6 sends the friends split into two adventures before meeting up again. I liked the creativity of the sheer vastness of the labyrinth. I have not found any of the books particularly scary but more of a science fiction adventure that is unique enough to keep the reader entertained. There are only a couple of things I don't like about the series in general. One is the constant, repetitive sexual references and the second is that the author has the female characters often saying things no woman would say and acting like like they're from the 1950's. But then he does something with one of the female characters that kind of redeems himself, at least temporarily. Overall, a good adventure with utterly new concepts with good attention to detail.

Through a maze darkly

This part of the continuing saga ( 5 of 6) finds us back with Albert and his gal pals as they begin their exploration of the second 'temple' in the parallel world that is, or was, home to the Sentinels. There are new monsters, new scares, and a brand new box of chalk (someone knows their Greek fables - although there is no minotaur here, there is something else, much stranger and more dangerous). While the group wanders the seemingly endless maze, trying desperately to find their way through it and still stalked by the ever-present hounds (as well as other, newer, creatures), they are pursued by something which might give them an advantage later in the story. While the first part of this book seems to meander, (it is a labyrinth after all), things certainly heat up as we move towards the end. People are hurt, scared, tired, weary - although curiously not as hungry or thirsty as I might've expected (yeah had a bit of an issue with that part).

Classic Marsh

Where does Death at the Dolphin rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The books of Ngaio Marsh are classic British mysteries and James Saxon is the best narrator of them. Death at the Dolphin is one her best - although I really like Surfeit of Lamphreys best.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death at the Dolphin?

There are quite a few. The beginning, where the producer nearly drowns in an empty theater is horror movie quality. These period novels are often hilarious due in part because of the complete lack of political correctness. The detective, Chief Inspector Roderick Allyan is one of the best in fiction.

Have you listened to any of James Saxons other performances before? How does this one compare?

He's Great!

No. Not extreme.

Ngaio Marsh revels in the world of the theater

A classic English mystery with unexpected twists and turns. Peregrine Jay is a fascinating and charming protagonist who works well with Inspector Allen. There is something almost mystical about an abandoned, bombed out theater struggling to be reborn. The reader experiences "The Dolphin" as an actual character with moods and secrets and dreams.

The actors who people Marsh's mystery are believable and often hilarious. Ngaio Marsh clearly knows the nuts and bolts of producing a play. Nothing in this novel is predictable.

Lacking a twist

Another colourfully told story by narrator James Saxon, who really brings the characters to life. The story itself however simply lacks that all important twist. The writing is always superb and filled with comical character description, but Marsh just doesn't have that Agatha Christie genius for a plot.

Bender Barrel Scraping

This appears to be a compilation of articles by Gray Barker regarding the case of Albert Bender. It's very repetitive and appears to be Barker presenting material that was incorporated in They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers and MIB: The Secret Terror Among Us. Both those are worth reading. Only one section I found of interest: an item in the appendix from an issue of Saucer News in which Barker provides a list of strange reasons for why the initial release of Flying Saucers and the Three Men was being delayed.

Superb, sarcastic and full of great characters

The book itself is excellent - the student politics and characters (especially for someone who went to Glasgow University) are extremely well drawn and the story sweeps you along - flashbacks and all. My one gripe is the pronunciation of 'Rank Bajin' by the narrator, in Glasgow slang this should be pronounced as 'rank bad yin' - fan more apt for the character! Nonetheless, an excellent listen.

Loved it. Listening to another of his. Really good storyline, plenty of action, a bit off the wall, witty - and the reader was excellent. Carried the tone and pace of the book superbly. This was the listening equivalent of the book you can't put down. I do hope he's still writing!

My favourite Brookmyre, perfectly read

I usually avoid buying audio books I have read before and loved as the voice In my head always sounds so different but I thought this was marvelously delivered, I loved it and I am pleased I broke my rule for it.

Essentially this is a comic thriller involving a depressed English teacher, a policewoman and two year 7 scallies taking on a team of international terrorists. laugh out loud, edge of the seat stuff.

Loved it. Interesting story with twists and turns. Great narrator. Would definitely recommend. Will be listening to more by this author.

This book had me cringing almost the entire time with the amount of detail the author went into. Beautifully sad and twisted love story. Totally recommend it.

Great read or listen!

This book was awesome! Really depicts addiction at its worst. If you get easily offended or are kind of uptight NOT the book for you. I loved listening too this, I finished it in only a few days. One thing that I'm a little disappointed in is the lack of recovery. It doesn't explain in detail Damien getting his shit together and moving forward. I think that it should have shed a littttttle light on his recovery process but it was an overall great listen! You won't regret it, unless you're uptight :)

spectacular, addicting, suspenseful, raw, "etc"

I loved the story from the very beginning. This book is RAW, REAL AND ADDICTING from the start. I finished this over 8 hour book in one day. It was that good. But I like weird shit. Struggling with my own addiction, I can relate to what he struggles with emotionally and his every day quest to stay high. If you don't like raunchy, full blown narrated sex, drugs and violence then this isn't the book for you. The narrator is good with impersonating the characters but will admit, the girl impressions got a little old haha. Over all, this was a great story and would love for a part 2. Although, it was by far what I was initially looking for, and was less of a self help, encouraging, inspirational story.. I can appreciate the realness, honest and open, crude content of the storyline. this is definitely a story I'll keep in my mind for quite a long time.. like I'm a living character in the book; was sad to hear it end.. like I was emotionally attached to the characters and feel like I will miss them. If you're looking for such a type of story to be completely lost in for a couple of days I recommend this book to you.

A crazed wild ride down the rabbit hole.

If you are a fan of Fear and Loathing or Trainspotting, this one is for you. The narration was excellent, with distinct character voices keeping me entertained and attentive the entire time. The book is timely with anecdotes of the current state of prescription and other drug abuse and enters into the shocking, often crazed state of mind of its' experimenters. The story left a few plot holes that I would've like have resolved but the overall 5 star rating is for the audiobook because I'm not sure I would've read it but hearing the narrator felt more like I was watching a movie...a really harsh rated R movie that I wouldn't want to watch around my parents haha!

Perplexed

The subject matter in this book is very disturbing. If you trigger easy for inhumane crimes this book might not be for you. That being said. I thought the authors story to be intricate and cleverly told. You really get a sense of what is unfolding, early on. That's a bit disappointing. However if you redirect your mind to approach from the plot, the story becomes more appealing. I was uncomfortable with the ease the author wrote in comparison of one event to the other. I'm not certain that the two instances of the same event in different circumstances was truly relevant to the story. Overall good enough story.

TRIGGER WARNING!!

This book contains sexual violence and other kinds of abuse, and graphic depictions of mental illness. If you are sensitive to those topics, this is probably not the story for you. I am not, and it was upsetting. It's a well written story, just very heavy.

A More Relatable Gone Girl

If you like twists, mysteries, and cheering for a relatable protagonist, I highly recommend this book. I could not stop listening to it! Easily 10/10.

Waiting for the next one

The story was very entertaining. While I'm not an avid reader, I have listened to some audio books over the years. I had read good reviews of the book and decided to try Audible specifically to listen to Come What May while I did so e recent traveling. Unfortunately, I had to split the book nearly in half with two weeks between. After listening to the first half, I was eager to finish the book on the second trip.

Kevin's way of describing the world Sam was living in was excellent. I was able to picture the surroundings, buildings, people, and action. I even had a couple laughs about some of the town descriptions as they were quite accurate for reality and expressed what many people probably think as they drive through.

I look forward to future audio releases of Mr. Swaim's writings so I can listen to them all. Hopefully Mr. Tedder will continue to narrate this series, if not all of them as I believe he did an excellent job. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in action/suspense. There is no need to be a fan of vampire books to enjoy this one.

movie material!

I really think this would make an awesome movie or start to a TV series. I hung on every word. the action is great, story is on pace with the action, and character growth dead on.

Entertaining from beginning to end!

What made the experience of listening to Come What May the most enjoyable?

I'm a big fan of "Walking Dead," "Breaking Bad," and the old "X-Files," where the strange and absurd meets everyday people and American living. This looked like one of those experiences, so I dived in. I must say that Jim Tedder is an EXCELLENT narrator, and I hope he continues with the series. He makes the story come to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Come What May?

The book is never slow, and takes off right away. What fun that he explores some of the Midwest areas where I live and work. Kevin weaves in some Dan Brown-like religious mythology that is pretty impressive and fun to follow, but I believe his writing and descriptions are more like Stephen King and others who help you picture the action easily and add humor in the right places. I found myself being impressed with how the book held my attention and how fast the time went by.

What about Jim Tedders performance did you like?

No doubt Jim is perfect for this series. I hope he continues with the next. I have the Kindle version of book 2, but am resisting reading it until the audio version is released. Jim is THAT good.
