A delightfully mangled fairy tale

I rarely read fairytale retellings, but I picked up The Magic Mirror and the Seventh Dwarf because its author, Tia Nevitt, is a friend of mine. Shes a former fellow SFF blogger and she lives just a few minutes away from me, so we chat occasionally and have gotten together a few times. Also, I enjoyed her first published novel, the first in her ACCIDENTAL ENCHANTMENTS series, The Sevenfold Spell, a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty which focuses on the minor characters in the story. I read it without telling her I was reading it, just so I wouldnt have to admit I didnt like it if it failed to please. (Fortunately, I did like it!)

The Magic Mirror and the Seventh Dwarf has a similar set-up. In this case, Tia delightfully mangles the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. In Tias version the evil queen has cursed a former lover, Prince Richard, with the magic mirror he must truthfully answer three questions for her every morning and evening. She uses Richards knowledge to rule her land tyrannically and to assure herself that she is still the fairest of them all. The seventh dwarf of the title is a young woman named Gretchen who is teased for being short and misshapen. When she hears about a farm where dwarves live, she goes there to try to find a husband. Soon she meets Angelika, the beautiful princess who is seeking shelter from her evil stepmother, the queen. When Prince Richard happens along and sees the princess, he must tell the truth: the evil queen is no longer the fairest of them all. This, as you might expect, causes all sorts of problems for everybody.

Tias ACCIDENTAL ENCHANTMENTS stories, published by Harlequins ebook imprint, are definitely romances. I dont usually like romance novels, but what sets Tias stories apart is her in-depth characterization of minor characters and the way she uses their troubles to explore real human emotions. In this story, I truly felt for Gretchen who sees herself as an outsider who can never fit in. She wants to be a good person, but the bullying she experiences and her jealousy of normal girls threatens to negatively affect her personality. When she decides to escape, she goes to the farm hoping simply to find people like her and a decent partner who can help her share the burdens of life.

Where does Caught in Amber rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Somewhere in the middle. I liked it, but am not passionate about it. Good book though.

Oh there is a steamy steamy love scene. Hot stuff!

Yeah, it flowed well and certainly wasn't boring. I listened to it quite quickly.

I think the author did a great job of setting up the world Sasha lives in. It is similar to earth, but with some cool differences. The characters are well developed and the heroine is a cool girl who is to be admired. I will say I'm over the "I'm going to use you to get what I need and in exchange you'll get this, but wait, I'm falling in love with you so that's complicating everything" plot. But the villain of the book wasn't always so bad, so that was interesting. I kind of liked him more that the leading man. I wanted to save the bad guy. You know, "all he needs to straighten up is the love of a good woman" thing. It's a great book. I really like Rachel Anslover too. She's got sass in her voice and plays the tough leading lady well.

I would recommend it to a sci-fi/romance reader, It is not really hard science Fiction though still sci-fi and it a fun romance novel in a way if you like lots of action and little romance in your romance novels. It does have a fun plot with star-crossed lovers, A cop who's sister is under the thumb of the Amber King dealer, Amber being the most additive drug in the universe; and a convict on parlor who he talks into going back to the King to get his sister out.

Another great whodunit framed by secret shifter society worldbuilding, two lovers struggling to make sense of it all

"Whodunit" fans will be left slapping their foreheads like a V-8 TV commercial from bygone days when the murderer--and the murder weapon--come to light. But that's not why I enjoyed this book.

Like the first book, this was another study into the lives of a woman and her man dealing with what life has thrown at them. Reb is Felis, but given she's only shifted once in her adult life (and then under duress) begs the question--is she *really*? That comes to the fore early on as she has to deal with a Pride from another city, another state, another country, another culture. As she struggles her way through the thorny questions Bran must come to terms with what he is to her. What *they* are to one another, as a couple, and what they're not and likely never will be. Though neither of them will ever stand accused of being shrinking violets, that's for sure.

Finally, romance fans will surely swoon at Bran becoming so delightfully alpha toward the end of the book. While his doing so navigates treacherous waters between what it means to be human and what it means to be Felis, he goes boldly forward believing doing necessary for him and Reb both. Though each of them seem eminently pleased with the, uhm...outcome.

Rebecca Desjardin has a problem. She's a Canadian private eye, she's a Felis, an ex-member of the local (Montreal?) cat shape-shifting Pride who still can't make the complete change to her inner Cat, and she's in love with Brandon Hanover, a human, and an investigative reporter.

Rebecca is an ex-member of the local Pride, because, not being able to totally change, she was brutally expelled, and now twenty years later Rebecca has been dragged back into the Pride's politics, first with a murder of a local Felis member in "Blood Of The Pride", and now with "Claws Bared", a human who may have been killed by a Feris member.

Jess, the tough leader of the local Pride, is now contacting Rebecca for another job. It seems that a male stripper for the Penscatta, near Pittsburgh, PA, exotic bar "Cat's Meow" (!) has been murdered. And it was a pretty nasty death, he was mauled and torn.

Vampires 101 - code for 11yr olds

I am not a literature genius or book bod but I know a good story when I hear it. This book is written in the vein (no pun intended) of Beverley Hills 90210, you know, the place were teenagers all talk like philosophical geni. The story starts with her arm being dislocated, being dragged by her hair but is overwhelmed of the beauty of the lips of her attacker, in the dark, in a graveyard with his back facing to her. She's rescued by the vamp who tears a throat and feasts on the blood but again all she can see is beautiful skin, shiny lips, muscles all the stereotypes that teen movies are made of.

I'm not a twighlight fan but I liked how they adapted the story but this, well, it's Mills & Boon do Vampires. Might be good if your 11-16 but as an adult its not really 30days of night.

Not Very Good

First I have to comment on the narration. It is horrible. Ms. Cope did not do this book justice. It may have been easier to get through if another narrator performed. As it was, it was torture to get through this book. Then, the narrator sounded like she was in an echo chamber. I did finish this book but frankly, it was very difficult to do so. I tried to find something redeeming about this book but failed to do so. It was based on fantasy, which was fine. Yes, there was lots of sex - very explicit but that didn't bother me.

WOW Seduced by Blood is bk4 in the Sweetblood series and it is a another faced paced, hot sensual romance. Its full of suspense and action packed. Sexy Love making scenes. This is Tristan Santiago's Regional Commander of the Guardian Vampire in the North Pacific U.S. and Canada. Santiago as he is called has been a prominent character in the Sweetblood series from bk 1 Bonded by Blood. He is an overbearing Alpha male always barking out orders and demands. The kind of Alpha male we love to hate. At times he is downright funny in his old world ways. He meets Agency Tracker teacher Roxanne Reynolds commonly know as Roxy. Roxy has been sent on assignment to the Pacific Northwest to help her friend Lily from bk3 "Tempted by Blood" do some special tracking. Roxy taught Lily centuries ago when she was at the Tracker Academy. Roxanne and Santiago spark flames as soon as they meet. The two have to work together to trace and find the Darkblood Villain Ventra Capelli. Ventra has outsmarted the Guardians and gotten away from them one two many times. Now she has caused an almost fatal attack on several of the Guardian causing almost fatal injuries. One of those Guardians is our hero Dom from bk one. The Agency of Guardians knows now that they have a traitor in there mist. A Guardian must be telling the DB of there plans. Roxy agrees to help sniff out the traitor and to help track Ventura. Let me just say that Ventura is one of the best written villains I have read in a long time. She is the type of female villain who is smart but very much deranged mentally. She is diabolic and meticulous in her planning of obtaining Sweetbloods and bringing down the Guardians. I love to hate her. The author Laurie London has a great knack for writing strong women characters weather they are the heroin's of the story or in this case the villain. As the story proceeds its not long before Santiago and Roxy find themselves in denial of there love for one another. They have been pretending to be married, which has lead them into very hot erotic and sensual loving making.

This is a pinch of paranormal passion

This was a great, but all too short, romance fantasy - I wish it had been made into a full book but alas it wasn't to be. Doomed and forbidden Were and Dragon shifters reunite after years of denial of their feeling and hunger for each other but with disastrous consequences. Along the lines of a paranormal version of Romeo & Juliet without the "wherest thou goest" and the reams and reams of paper !! and, just maybe, with a happier ending.

A very short listen but it packs a lot in.

Not Bad but Not GREAT

This wasn't too bad this at least had a plot and story line. The Narrator wasn't the best and her male voice almost sounded automated maybe if a different person narrated it maybe I wold have liked it more. This was about young love that was never forgotten that got a second chance.

NO NO NO NO

I like some of these short stories but this one was just so ridiculous, a female vampire bites her boss, doesn't take much blood, but hey presto, he's an electric wielding semi-vampire. Disjointed plot with an unbelievable (and not in a good way) end.

Don't waste your money there are better short stories out there.
