Dumb Gay Podcast with Julie Goldman & Brandy Howard

This episode is late because Julie & Brandy suck at life, and never want to record another podcast without Andrew Yang in it. They put it off for as long as they could, but eventually the show must go on. And in this case, the "show" is a poorly prepared podcast, without a guest, delivered late, and with very little enthusiasm. It's mostly unremarkable, but the girls do manage to move the needle with a new segment dedicated to social justice called "Close Your Legs to White Supremacy." This episode is not gonna win them any awards, but at this point, they're just happy they finished it.

This episode can only be described as: one thing: a f*cking miracle. Julie & Brandy don't often achieve any of their goals, or have any of their dreams come true, but both things happened when Andrew Yang agreed to be a guest on the podcast this week. Desperate to connect with him, while making eye contact (in front of the drug-den-bulletin-board-wall-of-listeners), the girls broke their cardinal 'no video conferencing' rule. So, while the deep connection/creepy eye contact/bulletin board backdrop were all a resounding success, unfortunately, the sound on the video call was an epic fail. Although they were disappointed, the crappy audio came as no surprise to the girls, who feel like they must have gotten black-out drunk and made a deal with the devil in order to score an interview with someone they love as much as Andrew Yang. Everyone knows that deals with the devil always come with a caveat, and in this case, their karmic-audio-retribution, was well worth it.

On this week's episode, Julie & Brandy deal with the loss of their long-time friend & frequent collaborator, Lady Red Couture. Lady Red was a well-known drag queen, black trans activist, and mentor to many in the LGBTQ community. This episode was recorded within days of her death, so the girls are still very much in their feelings, but the show must go on. So they break down the 60+ straight days of Black Lives Matter protests, before talking to Allison Riggs from the Southern Coalition for Social Justice about racial inequality and voter suppression, and what everyone needs to be doing RIGHT NOW in order to prepare to vote in the November election. All that, plus a 'So There's That' featuring an organization founded by LeBron James to help combat black voter-suppression. It won't bring Lady Red back, but this episode is dedicated to her anyway, and Julie & Brandy hope she would have liked it.

This is the second (and hopefully not last) installment of the Dumb Gay Politics: Icon Series. Some guests are just so iconic that they require a whole episode dedicated to them, and Miyoko Schinner is one such guest. She is the founder and owner of Miyoko's Creamery, a plant-based cheese & butter company that is helping traditional dairy farmers transition their farms from raising cows to growing crops needed for her vegan cheeses. Julie and Brandy were truly honored and humbled to interview someone who is not only a titan of the plant-based food industry, but an environmental activist, as well. The work she's doing is the future of the agriculture industry, and whether you're a vegan or not, this interview leaves no doubt that Miyoko Schinner is an American Icon.

This week's episode features one of the smartest, funniest, and most informative people that Julie & Brandy have ever met in their entire damn lives. If you're not yet familiar with Brandi Collins-Dexter from Color of Change, then get ready to have your mind blown. She came on the podcast to educate the girls about the #StopHateForProfit boycott in a segment called, "F*ck Facebook Schewww", but she ended up teaching an Ivy League, master class on digital discrimination, that Julie & Brandy were wildly unqualified to take. Brandi Collins-Dexter shined like a true professor dealing with 2 dumb, gay, hungover idiots who showed up to class unprepared: she didn't take it personally, and taught the damn class anyway.  And Julie & Brandy are forever indebted to her grace, because she delivered one of the most important segments that DGP has ever done.

This week, all 50 of the United States celebrated Juneteenth for the first time in history, while Vice President Mike Pence went on ABC and refused to say the words: BLACK LIVES MATTER. It's a revolutionary time in America, but Julie & Brandy are clearly the wrong people to do it justice, so they enlist the help of The Best Dressed Man in Politics: Cornell Belcher. Cornell breaks down everything from the optics of resentment politics, to the merits of mail-in ballots. And while the girls were beyond excited to talk to Cornell Belcher, they got a 'two-for' when one of their favorite, legal-eagle-listeners, Max R, sent in his gay feelings about the recent landmark, Supreme Court decision on LGBTQ civil rights.
