  • An interview with Shame

Throughout this interview, we investigate the many roles Shame can play in a child’s life. We look at how they can help children develop an understanding of what they think is right and wrong, and of how to cooperate with others.

While Shame can be a positive influence in a child’s life, they can also become overwhelming for children who are living in unsafe or violent situations, particularly when influenced by Self-blame and Guilt. This is the case for Ellie, an eight-year-old girl who is witnessing much of the physical and verbal violence being perpetrated by her dad towards her mum. Ellie’s dad has become very critical of Ellie, accusing her of being too reliant on her mum. This has started to make Ellie believe she is responsible for the violence and uncertainty in their home, and has led Ellie to call upon Shame more and more in her daily life.

Shame speaks about the supports that can make Ellie feel less guilt or self-blame about her home life, like her grandmother who visits her from out of town. But ultimately, when Ellie’s grandmother leaves, she returns to many of the negative messages that are reinforced when her dad becomes violent. To find the right amount of shame in her life, Ellie needs more supportive adults like her grandmother to focus on her strengths, teach her how to talk about what she’s feeling, and to talk about the ‘big secrets’ like family and domestic violence so Ellie no longer has to make up her own understandings.

In this episode you will learn:

    • how Shame can support children to be caring, co-operative and to get along with others  [1:07]
    • how children like Ellie can come to over-rely on Shame when they are witnessing violent behaviour at home or receiving negative messages from a parent [3:32]
    • how Shame can be foremost in a child’s life when they are experiencing violence, repeating unhelpful and negative messages to the child [5:10]
    • the importance of support networks in a child’s life in providing hopeful, trusting and nurturing messages [8:53]

    • An interview with Resilience
Resilience is a crucial part of positive mental health in infants and children. It is important that people who work with children have a sound understanding of the factors that help children grow, stay strong and remain present.

    • An interview with Shame
Children who experience violence or trauma at home commonly experience increased feelings of shame over time. Without support, these feelings can have significant negative effects on children’s mental health, and can convince them that they are responsible for adult perpetration of violence.

    • An interview with Secrecy
In this candid interview, Secrecy shares the role they play in preventing children from accessing the services they need after experiencing sexual abuse. They discuss the history of their role in suppressing community awareness of child sexual abuse, and the ways in which they deprive children and adults of the information they need to prevent and respond to abuse.
Secrecy shares with us their concerns regarding the developing practice skills of many professionals who help children to disclose their abuse, and to recover from the effects. However, Secrecy still has many tricks up their sleeve to prevent practice confidence and competence in encouraging and responding to disclosures of abuse, such as convincing practitioners ‘not to open a can of worms.’
Secrecy also explores the long-term implications for children’s mental health if they do not access the support that they need, and explains how they work together with Self-blame and Shame to ensure poorer relationship, educational, financial and health outcomes for victims of abuse.
In this episode you will learn:
      •  how Secrecy tricks children into believing they should keep child sexual abuse to themselves, and how perpetrators help Secrecy to prevent disclosures [1:34]
      • the tricks that Secrecy uses to take away children’s voices [3:15]
      • the difference that it can make for children when adults shine a light on Secrecy, and help children have important conversations about safety [5:50]
      • how Shame and Self-blame convince children that they don’t deserve support for their experience of abuse, and that the abuse was their fault [12:15]
