  • Suicide: thoughts, real attempts and confusing behaviors

Our guest on this episode of Emotions in Harmony is Dr. Isabella Vidriales, a therapist specializing in assessing individuals at risk or in crisis. Dr. Vidriales has 18 years of experience in the mental health field and in addition to her therapy services, she partners with the Los Angeles County police departments to provide law enforcement officers with training on mental health and understanding the warning signs associated with suicide.

According to a 2016 study, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, men are 3 times more likely than women to commit suicide, 70% of men who commit suicide are Caucasian, 51% of suicides are completed with firearms, and 90% of suicide victims suffered from mental health problems. Dr. Vidriales is committed to educating the population about the warning signs of suicide as well as empowering everyone with knowledge about the resources available to prevent suicides.

The warning signs of suicide are:

    1. Talking about wanting to die
    2. Doing suicide research – either methods of committing suicide or ways to get help
    3. Isolating completely from friends and family
    4. Behavioral and personality changes:
      1. Sleeping too much or not enough
      2. Consuming alcohol/drugs, or increasing consumption
      3. Irritability, rage, drastic personality changes
    5. In children, concerning thoughts written in their journals

We have all experienced something uncomfortable or difficult that we have had to work through, but with the right help and resources, we can overcome our situations to live full and healthy lives. We should be on the look out for these warning signs in our friends and family members and take the time to listen to their feelings and show empathy without casting blame, and help them seek treatment immediately if we feel like they are at risk. We want to intervene sooner, rather than later, and develop a support system for the person who is struggling. Dr. Vidriales says that the key to returning to a healthy place mentally after seeking treatment for suicidal intentions is to develop a daily routine including old or new hobbies so that you have something to look forward to as well as self-care practices such as exercising to release the stress or anxiety you are battling. Remember that you are not alone, and you do not have to face this darkness alone.

  • Loving, wise, and realistic social media boundaries for your kids

Our guest on this episode of Emotions in Harmony is Dr. Anna Seewald of Authentic Parenting. We are discussing the topic of ways that parents can engage with their children about social media, which is an unavoidable reality in today's world.

As with every other situation between parents and children, open communication is the key to modeling responsible social media engagement in children. Social media is designed to be addictive, and children are not wired to have self-discipline when it comes to putting down their devices since the culture they are growing up in is so focused on instant gratification. Though most social media platforms require that users be at least 13 years old, it is not uncommon for children to lie about their age to create a social media profile at a younger age. One of the main problems with this is that advertisements are targeted demographically, so children may be exposed to advertisements that are not age-appropriate and could be damaging to them. Ultimately, it is up to the parents to determine when they feel that their child is mature enough to create and manage their own social media profiles.

Parenting in this time of rampant social media is stressful for the parents, who can view their child's profile and scrutinize their child's decisions to post certain photos or information. Parents also need to pay attention to their child's behavior after they begin engaging with social media to be sure that they are not exhibiting any signs of depression that could be a result of decreased self-esteem or cyberbullying. Even if children do not exhibit any of these symptoms, it is crucial for parents have open lines of communication through being available, building trust, providing structure, and creating a judgment-free relationship.

Anna recommends that parents have a conversation with their children in which they collectively decide on 5 or 6 technology rules that the household will abide by (no phones at dinner, determining a common charging location rather than having phones charged in each bedroom, etc.). She also recommends that families look into purchasing a Torch or Circle technology monitoring device for the home. If parents are looking to educate themselves more on the facts and figures of the impact of technology on their children, Anna suggests Dr. Richard Freed's book "Wired Child".

  • Serenity and joy in 4-6 y/o children . Cultivating mindfulness

Mindfulness and meditation began as aspects of various religions, but are now used more broadly because of the evidence that focused breathing and meditation can ease physical and emotional stress. Mindfulness is not just sitting still and closing your eyes, as this is not relaxing for some people, but rather it is a way to train our attention and clear our thoughts. This is training our minds to be quiet and stay in the present moment as well as training our bodies to be aware of the sensations going on around us. A focused mind is a happy mind, so it is important for people young and old to learn to be mindful.

Children have less attachment to memories of trauma early in their lives, so it is important for us to teach them specific practices of mindfulness such as breathing, to give them the tools to cope with their emotions and external stimuli as they get older. Breathing is the first thing we receive after birth and it is the last thing we lose before death, and though we usually don't even realize that we are breathing, it is a tool that we can use to our advantage throughout our lives.

As part of your children's bedtime routine, have them lay on their backs and put a stuffed animal on their bellies and then practice focused breathing by having them "take the stuffed animal for a ride" as their bellies go up and down as they breathe. Another good way to teach children mindfulness is using books such as "Moody Cow Meditates" or "Spinning Inward."

I also recommend that you look into the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Susan Kaiser's video about how our anxious minds are like a shaken snow globe, and Dr. Nazanin Moali's Sexology podcast.
