Many people seek enlightenment as a way to escape the suffering that they're experiencing in this moment. They project that they will experience peace at some point in the future, and so the mind focuses on reaching that future moment when the goal of enlightenment has been attained and peace is known. The confusion here is that suffering is not avoided by moving the attention away from the experience of now, but by the radical opposite: moving the attention closer to the experience of now. So, in order to experience peace one must give up the idea that it lies in a future experience and surrender fully into this moment.
