EP 3780 It’s not my emergency

Listen Later

How often do you take responsibility for problems that were never yours to carry?

Many people spend their lives trying to rescue others from the consequences of their own decisions. They step into conflict that doesn’t belong to them, absorb other people’s stress, and sacrifice their own peace because they feel responsible for keeping everyone else happy. Over time, that pattern leads to resentment, emotional exhaustion, and a life driven by other people’s priorities instead of your own.

In this episode, I explore one of the most important mindset shifts you can make: recognising that not every crisis is your emergency. Compassion and support are essential, but they are very different from taking ownership of someone else’s choices. Whether it’s in your family, workplace, friendships, or leadership role, understanding where your responsibility ends allows you to stay calm, make better decisions, and protect your own wellbeing.

Drawing on my experience in policing, years of coaching high performers, and my own personal journey through trauma and recovery, I explain why so many of us become addicted to fixing other people’s problems. Often it comes from fear, guilt, people pleasing, or a belief that our value depends on being needed. While those habits may feel noble, they can quietly destroy your confidence, relationships, and emotional resilience.

Real leadership isn’t about carrying everyone else’s burden. It’s about remaining steady, offering guidance where it’s appropriate, and allowing people to learn the lessons that only experience can teach them.

If you constantly feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or responsible for everyone around you, this episode will help you develop healthier boundaries without losing your compassion. When you stop treating every problem as your responsibility, you create more energy, clarity, and capacity to focus on what truly matters. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is step back, stay calm, and remember: it’s not your emergency.
