In this weeks episode John chats about the extremely wet weather we have had in Ireland since the beginning of October and how that will impact the start of the bareroot season.
Starting a No Dig garden is also discussed and the benefits of No Dig. A question that is asked regularly is how much compost will I need to start my no dig beds ? Well lets look at an example of that
Lets say I want to make a bed 6m x2m and I will put the compost 15cm deep in year 1 (down to 5cm in subsequent years)
So the sums are:
6 m x 2m
600cm x 200cm = 120,000 sq cm
15cm deep x 120,000 = 1,800,000 cubic cm
move decimal 6 places = 1.8 cubic mtr of compost required.
In the following years you would change the 15cm deep to 5cm deep and use the same formula to see how much you require in year 2 etc.
John also talks about planting ideas for your winter planters, hanging baskets and more.
