How Dr. Amanda Massey Turned Personal Trauma Into A Passion for Performance Optimization

In this episode of Barbell Vitality, Brent speaks with Dr. Amanda Massey, a sports chiropractor for humans and animals across Central Texas. Her main location is at Tiger ATX in Austin, Texas. After a horse-related accident at the age of 16, Dr. Amanda had to go through a considerably painful period of rehab for a debilitating back injury. It was this traumatic experience through which she gradually developed an interest in becoming a chiropractor.

Dr. Amanda’s recovery included her going through a detox diet of smoothies, vegetables, and clean meats while completely avoiding dairy, gluten, and grains. This helped her to reduce inflammation in her body, which allowed her to get off of the massive amount of painkillers she depended on up to that point. She reflects on the willpower needed to get through that particular process, and the benefits it gives to anyone who is in chronic pain. It wasn’t the end of her road to recovery, but it was a huge obstacle that she had overcome.

As fate would have it, Dr. Amanda had another accident in college when a horse she was riding during a competition reared straight up as she was trying to get it to turn, causing her to fall off and separate her shoulder and slightly damage her ribcage and back. Luckily, with the help of her chiropractor, Dr. Amanda was able to get back in the saddle within only a couple of months this time around. She continues to ride to this day, though she has eased off the competitions.

Listen in and learn the three main factors that create dysfunction in the body, how to improve your fascia health, and best practices for healthier eating.

Memorable Quotes:

“Chiropractors are a weird group of people. But what’s cool about anyone in the holistic healthcare field is, we all unite together because we want to embrace independent thinking, free thinking, the ability to make your own decisions for your healthcare, and looking for more natural options for taking care of your body.”

“You never want to stretch a torn muscle. You always want to foam roll it.

“Everyone’s bodies respond to food differently, so everyone needs a different diet.”
