随着中国的经济发展水平的提高，中国大众有了更多的时间投入到自己的业余活动中。中国人最热衷的娱乐运动/活动之一就是乒乓球。

乒乓球被称为中国的“国球”，首先是因为在中国它有广大的群众基础，几亿人会打乒乓球，四、五千万人经常打乒乓球。其次，乒（乓球）超（级）联赛和全国各地的业余比赛给国民带来欢乐和享受；最后， 乒乓球是中国拿到的第一个体育世界冠军。因此，中国人非常骄傲，从此乒乓球开始在中国快速发展，爱好的人也越来越多。民族自豪感。

乒乓球的流行是因为乒乓球设备简单，容易普及。跟足球、篮球等不同，乒乓球不需要很大的场地就可以打。你只需要一个桌子， 一个球。和两个球拍。中国的公园里一般都有乒乓球桌。在各个城镇的活动中心也都有室内的乒乓球设施。而且，乒乓球也很容易打。 不是一个很难上手的运动。老少皆宜：从老人到孩子都能打。可以说是一项亲朋好友的聚会运动。
