Episode 10 – LISA TAMATI

Listen Later

Lisa Tamati
Ultra Endurance Athlete & Coach

Ultra Endurance Athlete & Coach Lisa Tamati knows what it takes to overcome obstacles.  With over 140 ultra-marathons and 70,000km in training and racing to her name Lisa is constantly pushing the limits of human endurance.

Lisa is perhaps best known for being the first kiwi woman to finish the infamous Badwater Ultramarathon through the hottest desert on earth, running 217km non-stop through Death Valley (which she did twice) and for running the length of New Zealand (2250km) for charities, Curekids and CanTeen.

She has canoed down the Canadian Yukon, cycle toured through over 25 countries and illegally crossed the Libyan desert, an expedition that was completed unsupported where she and her three teammates walked 250km in 7 days, carrying their entire water and food supply on their backs.  She has run thousands of kilometres through the Sahara Desert, Arabian Desert, Niger, Jordan, Moroccan desert as well the Chinese Gobi Desert and the Australian outback. In recent years, she has participated in expeditions and races in the Indian and Nepalese Himalayas.

However, Lisa’s running came to a dramatic halt in January 2016, when her mum, Isobel, suffered an aneurysm, a massive brain bleed that left her in a coma not expected to live.  Flying in the face of medical advice and convention, Lisa dropped everything to devote her life to her mum’s recovery. This story of love, determination and courage, what a daughter will go to, to help a loved one, is simply remarkable.

Lisa has also penned two international best-selling books and her third book, chronicling the fight to save her mum, “RELENTLESS” is due out soon.

Lisa also hosts her own podcast called “Pushing the  Limits” an in depth interview series focusing on running, medical and health science breakthroughs, fitness and nutrition, adventure and pushing the limits of human potential and is a sought after motivational speaker, running coach and mindset expert.

This is her story – Lisa Tamati – Indigenous 100
