• All of the moments in our life are connected, even when they don’t seem like it. Tom began his career studying chemistry at university and claims that, although the two don’t necessarily seem inextricably linked, there were certain exercises they would do which helped to inform his decisions as an entrepreneur. Success comes from joining the dots of the past, but you also have to make sure you’re not overdoing it.
• A massive reason a lot of people don’t succeed is that they think too much about doing stuff rather than actually doing it. But Tom actually had the exact opposite problem: he would do way too much stuff and not think about whether they were good decisions. Over time, he’s managed to balance those two mindsets.
• Tom spent a lot of his career in management and consulting, something which he feels lucky to have done as it taught him loads about good marketing strategies and how to write interesting emails. Again, it’s all about connecting the dots of the past, learning from them and using them for new ways of innovating.
