  • Diesel Against Ukraine: Trump’s Barter

The controversial deal initiated by Donald Trump—which involves temporarily lifting sanctions on Russian diesel while exerting heavy political and military pressure on Ukraine—has outraged most countries in the free world.
This unilateral decision, made without consulting Kyiv, is officially aimed at lowering fuel prices in the United States ahead of the midterm elections. In return, Washington reportedly halted intelligence sharing and cut off access to Starlink terminals to force the Ukrainians to cease their strikes against Russian refineries. This deal has sparked a wave of outrage among U.S. lawmakers and European allies, who view it as a major geopolitical betrayal that indirectly funds Moscow’s war effort. At the same time, investigations are raising questions about potential financial conflicts of interest involving transactions involving the foreign assets of the oil giant Lukoil and massive profits generated by cryptocurrencies.

    After diesel, the information war
Russian diesel is allowed again, Kyiv was not consulted and the American consumer will gain almost nothing: that much is established. The rest, the threat over intelligence, the throttling of Starlink, the dealings around Lukoil, still belongs to suspicion. It is legitimate; it is not proven.
The coming days will tell what follows. On 18 October, the White House will say whether it applies the Graham Act or waives it.[01] On the 29th, the extension of restrictions on Lukoil’s assets expires.[13] Between those dates, the question raised by Eric Ciaramella remains open: an energy ceasefire makes sense only if Kyiv can threaten Russian military targets in return, which Washington has not yet authorised.[47] On 3 November, American voters will say what they think of this barter.
One front remains that this text has only touched on: information. London has announced a National Centre for Information Defence,[40] and Ed Miliband warned in Warsaw against Russian hybrid attacks across the whole continent.[39] Kyiv, for its part, claims credit for its strikes on Yandex’s data centres, though the specialists consulted see, at this stage, no demonstrated drop in Russian influence operations.[43][44] What do we know about Russian interference, what can be proved, and what does Ukraine have to offer Europe in that war? We will devote our next piece to it.

  • A Pantheon for the Lame Duck

To our faithful listeners, rest assured: we have received your mountain of complaints, some even accompanied by process servers! It’s true that the last installment of our series “Voices of Twilight”—the already legendary “The Tartuffe of the Tundra or The Dinner of Kings“—dates all the way back to last April Fool’s Day. Some saw it as a joke, others as an extended Easter break. The truth is much more prosaic: keeping up with Donald Trump’s daily ramblings has become a form of mental combat sport. Between two outings on the green, three truths screamed onto Truth Social at hours when even insomniacs are sound asleep, and television announcements that redefine global diplomacy laws every night, the pace is simply unbearable. Rather than exhausting our sanity commenting on every single compulsive tweet, we preferred to reclaim the high ground—or at least step back far enough to ask the truly, absurdly fundamental questions. So, to answer your legitimate impatience and celebrate our quarterly literary flare-up, here is the long-awaited sequel. Fasten your seatbelts: flight destination Élysée and the bizarre twists of Macronist storytelling is ready for takeoff

  • “Partners in Leadership”: Bush’s Plan for Europe (2)

Mitterrand was right, particularly twice — and that is perhaps what he was never forgiven for. Like de Gaulle before him, he had said out loud what Paris prefers to keep quiet: “France does not know it, but we are at war with America”, he confided to Georges-Marc Benamou in the last months of his life. And as early as December 1989, he had seen what Bush was opening in Mainz without naming it: that a reunified Germany could, in his own words as reported by the British archives, “gain even more ground than Hitler did” — not by arms, this time, but through the vacuum that America was preparing to leave behind. This Anglo-French link between Mitterrand and Thatcher, deeper and older than was said at the time, Admiral Philippe de Gaulle once confirmed to me in person.

Latest sign: the programme of President Steinmeier’s state visit to France was not limited to ceremonies. In Bordeaux, on Friday 9 October, it included Ariane Group and the Laser Mégajoule, the French facility for simulating nuclear tests. This stop came the day after the hearing of the Chief of the Defence Staff before the Defence Committee, and just as Pascal Lorot, of the Institut Choiseul, recalls in Le Figaro that Paris alone holds two assets that Berlin lacks: nuclear weapons and the experience of fire

  • The Pope Spoke, MBS Kept Silent

A few days apart, two visitors came to France: Pope Leo XIV, and Mohammed bin Salman. Hedy Belhassine sets them in a distorting mirror. At Saint-Denis, on the Champs-Élysées, in Metz and at Lourdes, Leo drew a fervour unseen since de Gaulle at the Liberation. The visit was apostolic, and diplomatic: the smallest state on earth, armed with 2.4 billion faithful. Macron offered a handshake, a set speech, and a side door into Mass at Metz, where Church and State are not separated. Then the Élysée returned to MBS, crown prince, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, owner of oil, sand and subjects. He has the most powerful armoury in the Arab world, but the suppliers kept the key. Trump will not move while the embrace with Netanyahu is refused; Turks, Pakistanis and Egyptians promised, and forgot. Paris offered frigates, discretion over Yanbu, and, as a diversion, AlUla and a leisure park. French Muslims, watching Leo on television, imagined a homily at the Grand Mosque of Paris, calling hearts to union, love and peace. Prince MBS kept silent.
