CrossFit is both a physical exercise philosophy and a competitive fitness sport, incorporating elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, kettlebell lifting, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises. It is presented as a training regimen that prepares its trainees for any physical contingency, preparing them for what may be "unknown" and "unknowable". It is practiced by members in CrossFit-affiliated gyms known as 'boxes'.

James Bish is the founder, owner and head coach at CrossFit Plymouth, one of the earliest CrossFit-Affiliate Boxes in the UK. He has been involved with CrossFit for 16 years and has competed countless times and coached many competitors, including Maz Glover who competed in the CrossFit Games
