I don't fail students - they don't do the work and they fail themselves. While a simple concept, this can easily be confused and just thought of that the "teacher doesn't like me and failed me". In reality I just assign the grade in the gradebook. Once of the most interesting things in my courses because of my grading structure is that students realize their own lack of effort and take full responsibility for it. Many of these students have often gone on to become some of my best mentees and lifelong friends. Enter: Alex Morehead.
This is probably one of the funniest podcasts on the EE podcast to date. Alex has an amazing balance of enlightenment, cynicism, and wit that always makes him a delight to talk with and listen to. This podcast, Alex talks about how failing a class is not the end of the world - it can actually be the beginning of it. He discusses high standards, growth, and mindset.

Spurred from last weeks episode, Ally surprised me when she said the thing she has learned the most from me was nothing physical - but a mindset. She shared several stories and said that she really thought we should do an episode on it - so here we are! An entire week of mindset! In this episode, Ally shares some things she thinks that makes me a bit different from some of her past teachers and how some of the simple practices I teach in class and as an intern supervisor have helped to evolve her mindset.
Listen in and as we laugh and share stories! I hope this episode makes you think about life just a little bit differently....

What I teach and practice in my life is the value and importance of reflection. Dedicated time to sit and reflect on where you have come from, what you have learned, what you can celebrate, and what lessons you can integrate into your life going into the future. This is so important to me that I have integrated this into one of the values of the Extraordinary Events Initiative.
