Hey guys! Chris and Melissa here, we're bringing you a really big conversation today. One that is difficult for many families to navigate. According to research, one component that makes up a strong family is shared spirituality. But what happens when a family member steps away from your faith?
Research shows that last year, for the first time ever, Gallup reported America's membership in houses of worship dropped to 47%. A significant difference from the 50% reported in 2018 and even farther from 70% in 1999. This is more than just numbers. For individuals and families, this can be a really challenging dynamic.Today we have a thought-provoking conversation with Thomas McConkie. Thomas teaches courses on mindfulness and adult development through the Lower Lights organization in Salt Lake City. Where seekers of diverse faith orientations can discover new depths and heights in their evolving identity. Thomas takes us on his journey of developing his faith by leaning into the doubt he felt at a young age.
From Christianity to Buddhism and back to Christianity 20 years later, Thomas has unique insight into the root of a faith crisis. Listen in as Thomas talks about the importance of identity and how it's the questions we ask that lead us to who we really are. He talks about the transformational power that doubt has and how it can help you find a deeper quality of faith (if you let it). You'll get practical tips and practices for navigating doubt in your own life, as well as what you can do if there is a faith struggle within your family.
Join us as we discuss the healthy ways your family can grow together and how you can bring a deeper sense of belonging to your kids even if they've strayed from the path.

Hey guys! Chris and Melissa here, as the end of October draws near, we are getting close to a yearly family tradition of ours. It's one that has taught our whole family about where we come from and now we get an opportunity to celebrate them every year!
We were first introduced to this tradition by a good friend of ours back in Arizona, we were lucky enough to be invited and learn more about our friend's histories as well as our own. If you've been listening to Family Brand long you know that some of our biggest values are that our kids know they belong and have a strong identity in who they are. There have been countless studies on why it's important for people to know their ancestors and how the stories they left behind can only make us stronger.
Join us as we discuss how we like to celebrate our family through this day, the fun we have in researching our family history, and even how we keep honoring our ancestors the entire year. You'll get our best tips and practices on how you can dive into your family history and how to throw a Dia De Los Muertos party that will have your kids excited to learn about their heritage. This tradition has not only been great to learn about the far past but has created an amazing opportunity for us to hear the stories of our parents, and grandparents as well, only strengthening our sense of family.
We hope this episode inspires you to jump into your own history and share with your family the great pride that comes with knowing who you are. If you do decide to celebrate this tradition with your family tag us on Instagram @ourfamilybrand so we can celebrate with you!

Hey guys! Chris and Melissa here. Recently, we've been digging deeper about what we want our listeners to get out of the Family Brand Podcast and it's come down to one thing that we think is crucial to living a full and happy life. If you guessed courage then you would be right! But what exactly is courage, and how does it serve the purpose in our life? We think Maya Angelou said it best.
"I am convinced that courage is the most important of all the virtues. Because without courage, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently."
Without courage we wouldn't even be in Hawaii, we could research, plan, and replan again and again but the real virtue that got us on that plane was courage. Join us as we discuss where exactly courage comes from and how you can tap into that power when you most need it. We talk about the different types of courage you can have, whether it's as simple as signing up for a new class, or as daunting as moving across the world. You'll get practical tips on how you can build your courage and take that step towards your future self.
As people, we tend to make decisions through the lens of past regrets or the fear of future possibilities, but the beauty and freedom of courage comes from leaping NOW. Listen in on our best tips and tricks on how you can drop out of your head and start taking real-life actions towards the goals, dreams, and desires that you were meant to fulfill. You'll hear about an exciting moment where we were able to help our son Tate find the courage within himself and create a night that he will never forget.
His story has inspired us to take a look at our own limitations and how we can improve our courageous leaps. As well as a look into times where disappointment may have made us close ourselves off and how we can push through and live life through the pain. Your dreams are on the other side of fear, and all it takes is just 20 seconds of insane courage to make them come true.
We hope this episode has inspired you to live life courageously and instill this virtue within your own family. One of the best things we can do to take our families back is to raise individuals who know and exercise daily courage. We were so excited to talk with them because they have some great insight into how you can raise your kids to be inquisitive of the world around them. They talk about the pillar of learning within their family and how it has helped not only their children but everyone grows.

As the saying goes "leaders are readers" and one of the best things you can do is to surround your kids with books. You'll learn about the importance of reading and how libraries are one of the resources you should be taking advantage of. Hey guys! Chris and Melissa here, As we approach our year mark of moving from Arizona to Hawaii, we've been thinking about the ways that we have grown and changed over the course of the last 12 months. If you pay attention, where you live can teach you a lot of lessons, and our experience has been no different.
Listen in as we share the unexpected lesson of finding fulfillment with fewer things. While materialism is a big issue, we want to emphasize that wanting a bigger house, a better car, and more things is not inherently bad or even frowned upon. But we've gained a keen sense of awareness of the big difference between our simple life in North Shore and the frantic pace of living on the mainland. You'll hear our thoughts on how it's changed not only our physical space but also our mental and spiritual space as well.
Join us as we talk about how we quickly realized that even the small amount of things we brought are almost too much for where we are now. It's easy to get wrapped up in feeling like we don't have enough, which can put a strain on our wallets and our minds. We talk about the risk of comparing yourself to others and how that can lead to less satisfaction and more stress in your life. You'll hear our experience of making time to figure out where our values truly lie, and how that has given us more confidence, joy, and freedom as a family. If you've felt overwhelmed lately it may be time to slow down and take stock of what is taking up space in your life.

Hey guys! Chris and Melissa here, since moving to Hawaii we have had the chance to meet so many amazing people and hear their incredible stories. One couple in particular, who live right down the street from us, Chris and Taylor Pierce, have a story that has been particularly impactful. They have experienced a tremendous amount of loss and grief throughout their marriage. Frankly, a lot more grief than anyone should have to go through in life. Through miscarriages, a lost baby, and just last year the passing of their 8-year-old son, Griff.
In today's episode, we have a deep and honest conversation about grief and how you can support those who may be going through a difficult time. One of our mottos is "Smith's show up for people", but when it comes to loss and grief it's hard to say what that looks like. We loved learning how to better do that from the Pierces! Join us as we discuss Chris and Taylor's everlasting courage and their journey navigating loss through difficult pregnancies and miscarriages to the joy of adopting and growing their family. You'll hear the inspiring story of Griff, an 8-year-old who lived life to the fullest and always wore his heart on his sleeve.
You'll hear their advice on how you can best show up for those who are grieving as well as the different ways that people supported them through their loss. Grieving is a complex process that shows up differently for everyone, and Chris and Taylor talk about how they work through this together as a team, and a family. They share many specific ideas, including how one of the most impactful things you can do is listen.
We are so thankful and honored that Chris and Taylor were willing to tell us their story and we are so inspired by the bright and lasting legacy of light who is Griff. Our hope for today's episode is that you are able to better support the ones you love through any grieving process.

Hey guys! Chris here, as parents it's one of our jobs to make sure our kids grow up healthy and happy. Of course, this is easier said than done. We all have either experienced or known families who have suffered from recurring ear infections, eczema, and all sorts of other ailments that just won't seem to go away. If you've ever thought "there has to be another way" then this episode is for you!
Today we talk with Dr. Sheila Kilbane, a pediatrician, and advocate for transforming pediatric healthcare. Our journey with Dr. Sheila actually started a few years ago when she was a client of The Campfire Effect, but the conversations we had would shape and change how our family approached our kid's health. In this episode, we go over the importance of nutrition and how typical childhood illnesses can actually be treated and even cured through the food we give our kids.
Join us as Dr. Sheila talks about her personal health journey and how she has evolved her practice to integrate conventional medicine with proper nutrition and education so that parents (and kids) can be more confident when it comes to their health and body. Dr. Sheila has key insights into what may be causing those pesky recurring issues your child may have and you'll hear firsthand the difference these changes have made in our family. We talk about her new book and her passion to empower all families to take their kid's health back and create a stronger, healthier, and stress-free life.
Strong bodies help create strong individuals and strong families. So sit back, relax, and hit play because this episode is full of information on how you can stop worrying about the sniffles and start planning your next adventure.
