Fans On The Run: A Podcast Made By, For And About Beatles Fans episodes

  • Fans On The Run - Chip Madinger (Ep. 51)

It’s the first proper episode of Fans On The Run of 2021, and this time I have the right year in the episode graphic! Joining me today to chat co-wrote the legendary books “LENNONOLOGY – Strange Days Indeed” and “Eight Arms To Hold You: The Solo Beatles Compendium”, Chip Madinger! We talk about the last few Beatles deluxe editions, “The Beatles At The Beeb” series, Chip’s involvement with The Capitol Albums boxes in the mid 2000s, the utter confusion that is the many versions of Band On The Run on CD, the pre-internet research process for the original version of Eight Arms, some highlights of his vast collection, documenting the life of John down to the day,  and the mystical world of bootlegs, among many other things!

  • Fans On The Run - Ethan Alexanian (Ep. 50)

As the clock strikes twelve, a new year dawns. As the new year approaches, so does this very special celebratory 50th episode special of Fans On The Run! Friend of the show (and "queen of all Beatles media" Kit O'Toole joins us once again, but to flip the script of the show and ask me about my Beatles story! We talk about being mesmerized by the track number changing on my CD player during my first listen of the "Blue Album", indoctrinating several friends to this band on the playground, driving across town in a desperate search of the DVD for “A Hard Day’s Night”, my Michael Jackson phase of music, the genesis of this show, seeing purple Kool Aid when I first walked into the Fest For Beatles Fans and fearing the worst, long-term plans for the show, bailing out Ken Womack in a trivia contest, some special messages, and a big announcement from yours truly, along with much, much more!

Special thanks to Jim and Susan Ryan, The Fab Four, Mean Mr. Mayo, Ken Michaels, Tom Hunyady, Andy Nicholes, Ed Chen, Lonnie Pena, Jude Southerland Kessler, Lanea Stagg, Plastic E.P., Nathan Loo, Sam Whiles, Richard Philip, and (of course) Kit O'Toole for contributing to this very special episode! • Fans On The Run - Laurence Juber (Ep. 49)

“Every time a bell rings, a podcast meets some Wings”

It’s a Christmas miracle, the special finale to the Christmas-lead-up-two-a-week-episode-schedule of Fans On The Run! You may be sad that we’ll be going back down to once a week, but today we have a guest who will not disappoint. It’s Laurence Juber! We talk about his start as a session musician in the 70s, his guitar influences, a crash course in pre-decimal British money, December 1963 (no, not the Four Seasons song), how he became a Wing-man, what started his Beatles fingerstyle guitar album series, the terminology describing Lute players, the guitar he bought before that fateful trip to Japan in 1980, Christmas Music, and much, much more!

  • Fans On The Run - Richard Buskin (Ep. 48)

It’s beginning to look a lot like, a new episode of your favourite show, Fans On The Run! In this episode, I’m joined by a New York Times bestselling author, and the co-host of fellow podcast The Beatles Naked, Richard Buskin! We talk about Beatles political cartoons, “Swinging London” and Carnaby Street, practicing the “Lennon Stance” with a plastic Beatle toy guitar, the joys of Sixties pirate radio, a bizarre tale of a school performance of “All You Need Is Love” in the summer of love, the most extensive mention of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich that this show has ever seen, Richard’s tailor father making suits for The Troggs to wear on “Top Of The Pops”, how he got a bestselling book in the USA, and the emotional response to seeing Paul McCartney getting mobbed outside the MPL offices, and more!

  • Fans On The Run - Connie Mclean (Ep. 47)

It’s Friday, so you already know there’s gonna be a new episode of FoTR coming right at you! Joining me today, is a very prevalent member of the Beatles social media world, an ambassador of sorts of the 60s fashion revival, and fellow member of the “new generation”, Connie Mclean! We talk about shouting suggestive comments at The Rolling Stones on stage, sexism within the greater Beatles community, “McLennon”, that time she saw Paul, Ringo and Ronnie Wood at the O2, dancing around the fact I have not seen “Almost Famous”, the differences in pronunciation of “Beatles” across the Atlantic, the correct answer to ‘what’s your favourite Led Zeppelin album?’, and this show’s tendency to ramble on a bit. All that and more? You’d be insane not to listen!

Oh hello, it's Fans On The Run back for yet another delicious round! Today, I'm joined by the author of the Recipe Records series of books, and the co-host of the "She Said She Said" podcast, Lanea Stagg! Please forgive me for the horrible food puns in advance!

  • Fans On The Run - Caitlin Larkin (Ep. 45)

It's Friday, so logic indicates that it is time for another FoTR! In this episode, I am joined by one of the most prolific members of the social media Beatles world, plus my first guest with a TikTok page, Caitlin Larkin! We cover a lot of ground in this relatively short (sort-of) interview, like the rite of passage of any Beatles fan of journeying over to Liverpool, the whereabouts of the original Magical Mystery Tour bus, a proverbial tour of the "secret" Beatles corridor at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, temper tantrums at Sam Goody, dealing with price gouging at record stores, Funko Pops, buying CD box sets for almost the exclusive purpose of decoration, taking Beatles tours from other former FoTR guests, staying up late as a kid to watch "The Beatles Anthology", and the strange allure of a Beatles cease and desist!

  • Fans On The Run - Simon Weitzman (Ep. 44)

Is it time for a new episode of FoTR already? Yes it is! Today I had the pleasure to have a chat with author, documentarian, and all around creative type Simon Weitzman! As it tends to happen with this show, we jump around all over the place with this conversation; the revival of the mixtape, déjà vu, working with Tom Murray on the book about the "Mad Day Out" photo shoot, a burning question of mine about The Small Faces and the live satellite broadcast of "All You Need Is Love", déjà vu, exploring the BFI archives on the movie "Help!", the act of wearing one's needle out playing Rubber Soul, comparing the big international Beatle gatherings, a startling claim about "Revolution 9", "Ferris Bueler's Day Off", the compassion of the Beatles community, the genesis of the "Here There and Everywhere" documentary, and my seeming contractual obligation to mention Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich at least once per episode.

  • Fans On The Run - "The Three Beatle Babes" (Ep. 43)

This is the longest episode of Fans On The Run yet, but it is not an episode, it is three episodes in one! In this mega-episode, I had the pleasure to speak with three special gals who all ran fan clubs back in the 60s, Marti Edwards, Pat Kinzer Mancuso and Patricia Gallo-Stenman! Giving the Fabs awards at press conferences? Check! Making friends with Beatle families? Check! Detailed plans to sneak into the Beatles hotel? Check! Having a "birthday party" for a Beatle? Check! All three of the conversations are fab, gear, and all the other pimpily hyperbole as they say, so sit back, get some popcorn, grab your headphones and enjoy!

    TIMESTAMPS FOR EACH INTERVIEW:

    Marti Edwards - 0:22

    Pat Kinzer Mancuso - 58:34

    Patricia Gallo-Stenman - 1:37:36

  • Fans On The Run - Darren DeVivo (Ep. 42)

It's the most wonderful time of the year, because from now, until Christmas Day, Fans On The Run will be going up to two episodes a week!

To kick this celebration off, I'm joined by WFUV radio personality, and fellow podcaster, Darren DeVivo! Among topics, we talk about watching the movie Let It Be at a cinema at age five, midnight screenings at Beatlefest, some mean kid saying "The Beatles Are Dead", certain "cool" record labels, the importance of those Capitol Records '70s cashgrab compilations, the first Darren bought a mint condition record, playing the Christmas records on a bootleg reel-to-reel, Darren's Beatles Specials on WFUV the psychology behind the Mets and Yankees rivalry, and the concept of snowfall!
