  • Karen’s Comin' to Town (ft. Dr. James Simmons, Robert Myrick, Donovan X Ramsey)

    Episode Summary:

In this week’s episode, things get real complex and complicado when Jarrett asks the question, can Black people be gentrifiers? To help answer this, and other thorny questions about gentrification, Jarrett and Tre’vell are joined by Atlanta-based commercial real estate developer and broker Robert Myrick and L.A. Times reporter Donovan X. Ramsey. It’s a thought-provoking conversation that gets into the history of this process, dissecting why Black and Brown people are the ones to lose when Karen moves into the neighborhood.

    Episode Notes:

Fill up your Thursdays with more of Tre’vell by checking out Crooked Media’s “What A Day'' or check out FANTI’s Episode 57, titled “Funky Covid-ina (ft. Nurse Alice Benjamin, Dr. Darien Sutton and Bianca Mabute-Louie).” During the Listener Feedback segment, Jarrett mentioned a thoughtful parenting social video that Destiny Bennett shared on her IG @theycallmemamabennett. Lastly, you can learn more about our guests Dr. James Simmons by following him on IG at @askthenp and our guests Donovan X. Ramsey by following him on IG or Twitter at @donovanxramsey. Robert Myrick is about that social media life.

Omarion–excuse us–Omicron is taking over, and so we invited Dr. James Simmons on the show to answer all our questions: Is it time to panic? Should we cancel our holiday travel plans? What if we’re not boosted? Dr. Simmons provides us with that good, good insight and also explains why South Africa deserves a shout out for letting the world know about Omicron. If you hadn’t heard, Dr. Simmons came correct when he explained that it ain’t South Africa’s mutation, ya’ll!

  • Respect Your Elders

    Episode Summary:

Black parents don’t play when it comes to respecting elders--whether they deserve it or not--and this can be problematic. That’s why Tre’vell and Jarrett get personal about the good, the bad, and the trauma of respecting elders. They get into the differences between white and Black parenting, how slavery factors into ideas of respect, and how “respecting your elders” still shows up in their professional and personal relationships as grown ass adults.

    Episode Notes:

Jarrett mentions Greenleaf, which is an Oprah Winfrey Network show that also streams on Netflix. The clip comparing White vs. Black Kids is from a YouTube video.

    A Tough Question

Jarrett asked Tre’vell, “Do you wanna be accountability partners?” when they set out on their umpteenth fitness journey, which sparked this conversation that seeks to define good accountability partnerships.

  • What Was Said!

Jarrett’s back from vacation where he got an acute case of the giggles, and passed them on to Tre’Vell. This week, they dive into the mailbag to respond to listener questions...and listener shade. Strap in, cause this episode covers A LOT of ground. Like, three whole continents worth of ground.  From the African continent, we hear from Akani who takes Jarrett & Tre’Vell to task for saying the COVID vaccine isn’t as available “in Africa”. Lucas in Brazil laments that “coming out” is extra burdensome for intersectional folks like them who are transmasculine, non binary, aro, ace and gay. Plus, lots of listeners from the U.S.

    Episode Notes:

We received a letter from an Ace/Aro-identifying fan. Don’t know what those terms mean? Well, OULGBTQ + Society wrote definitions.

Here is a list of episodes that Jarrett and Tre’vell recommend checking out after listening:

Episode 45 - Freelancing In Beyonce’s Gig Economy

Episode 75 - Colorism: White Supremacy’s Stank Ass Grandchild (ft. Jarrett Lucas)

Episode 77 - Colorism Part 2 (ft. Portia Bartley)

Episode 78 - No Cis-sies Allowed (ft. Da’Shaun Harrison), and after you listen don’t forget to buy Da’Shaun’s book Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness.
