  • Ep 22 - FMC Unplugged
Episode 22 is a little different. It’s like FMC Uplugged. Pete and Gretchen visit THE couch to record sans microphones, not-so-witty music quote, and theme music to get an episode out this week.
The couple covers the weekly Views from the Couch and Pete’s training. They also cover a few more shows and podcasts that have given some FMC shout outs. (Thank you, Gomers, Endurance for Everyone, and So This is Fitness!)
From there, Pete talks about a post in one of his Facebook groups where sugar is like a curse word and treated as a full-blown addiction. What do you think?
And it must be a week for Pete to be a bit annoyed as he brings up a blog (found here) about weight loss/racing weight that bothers him. But as Gretchen aptly points out, Pete is easily annoyed.
They also give out some swag! Leave a review and maybe you will too!
SPOILER ALERT: Pete and Gretchen have a talk about This Is Us, so listen at your own risk!

  • Ep 21 - Poor David (Or When David Learned About Fat-Adapted)
This week starts out with the usual wine, FMC Rewind, Views from the Couch, and update on Pete’s training. In there Pete talks about a dream (nightmare?) where he was back at his first half-marathon and it didn’t go so well. There’s also a point where Pete turns a bit vulnerable and is promptly swatted down by Gretchen. It’s an interesting look inside how these two communicate.
The bulk of the episode then talks about the day they spent with their good friends, Carla and David. Pete and David talked a lot about the fat-adapted lifestyle. As they talked about what fits in the lifestyle, poor David kept hoping some of his favorites would be ok. Spoiler alert – they’re not.
David was also interested in the science, which Pete loves and makes Gretchen’s eyes glaze over. In the end, they had some NSNG pizza and a great time!

  • Ep 20 - Disney, the Desert, and a Gomers Shout Out
Pete & Gretchen are dedicated to their dozens of fans. So dedicated that they brought the recorder with on vacation and did an episode while lounging in the AZ desert!
Episode 20 is a recap of their vacation, especially their eating extravaganza. Also, Gretchen gets in a workout? In a special way, yes!
Also, they pay tribute to Pete’s favorite podcast over the last decade – Two Gomers Run For Their Lives. Anthony and Steven have provided Pete so many hours of entertainment over the years and, as it turns out, the Gomers are listening to FatMan Chronicles! The honor of this shout out almost left Pete speechless. Almost. Check out the Gomers podcast to hear about Steven finally breaking 5 hours for the marathon, and their tribute to FMC with about 8 minutes to go in the episode.

The rest of the episode covers a few topics, including Gretchen’s weekly View from the Couch, Pete’s training update, a ton of shout outs, and their upcoming vacation. Why is Pete so nervous about eating at Disney? Does he have a point or is he nuts? Well, he’s off his rocker, but still…

  • Ep 18 - Keto vs. Fat-Adapted
In this week’s installment, Pete and Gretchen give you their usual recap of the week. Gretchen is slacking with her “Views from the Couch” but vows to take notes and do better soon.
Pete updates you on his training and some questions FMC has received about their eating habits. With that in mind, the couple discusses the differences between keto and fat-adapted. It is not an in-depth look at both plans but rather an overview with insights into how they settled on a more fat-adapted lifestyle.
NOTE – Pete and Gretchen are not doctors, dieticians, nutritionists or even very good at explaining what the heck they are doing. Please consult with your doctor before implementing anything they talk about. They are here to help once you’ve been cleared to embark on the lifestyle!

  • Ep 17 - That's Random
Episode 17 is random. More so than usual? You be the judge.
Pete and Gretchen catch up on the last week and dive into how their goals are going just a couple of days into the new year. This week’s “Views from the Couch” is brief, but enlightening as always!
Then the couple talks about a few health-related articles. Did you know about the latest diet craze? Is it good for you? You’ll learn all about CICO.
Finally, they talk about a few recipes that have really hit home. Is anyone surprised when they talk about food at this point? Hopefully, it gives you some good ideas.

Episode 16 was recorded on Christmas night because your hosts are dedicated!

  • Ep 15 - The FatMan Returneth
Episode 15 was recorded on Pete & Gretchen’s 8th Anniversary, that’s how dedicated they are to the listeners. They recap their anniversary celebration weekend, or as Pete calls it, “The FatMan Returneth.” They may have strayed from the plan. There may have been donuts involved. #blamePete
What’s interesting, but not surprising, is how the couple differs in their view of what happened and how big of a deal it was. Do they get right back on track?
After remembering to introduce the wine, it is time for Gretchen’s Views From the Couch. This installment is big and includes notes because she wants to make sure she doesn’t disappoint!
Pete updates everyone on his training which means he talks about all the podcasts. And he reveals how the Chicago Marathon lottery went for him.
The couple (well, Pete) talks a bit about sugar – what has sugar? Is sugar the right fuel? Online discussions of sugar have Pete a little puzzled and he talks that through.
Finally, they talk about strategies to deal with friends and family during holiday parties with their eating plan. Gretchen seems to have a much easier time with this as she just ignores the comments. Pete, he struggles much more.

  • Ep 14 - Searching for Why
Episode 14 is about Pete and Gretchen searching for “why” they set the goals they did in episode 13. Gretchen just couldn’t wait to talk it through. OK, no one believes that, it was all Pete.
If you get uncomfortable with a couple talking something through that they don’t necessarily agree upon, fair warning before you listen. The couple is fine by the end but there are some contentious times.
Anyway, they start out with a quick refresh of what happened over the three days since episode 13, which isn't much. There is a surprise gift Pete reveals. There is also a favorite recipe and, as promised, here it is:
This loaded cauliflower, made with butter, sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese and bacon, is the ultimate in low carb comfort food!

    Loaded Cauliflower
    Servings: 6 people
    Ingredients• 1 pound cauliflower florets• 4 ounces sour cream• 1 cup grated cheddar cheese• 2 slices cooked bacon crumbled• 2 tablespoons snipped chives• 3 tablespoons butter• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder• salt and pepper to taste
Instructions1. Cut the cauliflower into florets and add them to a microwave safe bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of water and cover with cling film. Microwave for 5-8 minutes, depending on your microwave, until completely cooked and tender. Drain the excess water and let sit uncovered for a minute or two. (Alternately, steam your cauliflower the conventional way. You may need to squeeze a little water out of the cauliflower after cooking.)2. Add the cauliflower to a food processor and process until fluffy. Add the butter, garlic powder, and sour cream and process until it resembles the consistency of mashes potatoes. Remove the mashed cauliflower to a bowl and add most of the chives, saving some to add to the top later. Add half of the cheddar cheese and mix by hand. Season with salt and pepper.3. Top the loaded cauliflower with the remaining cheese, remaining chives and bacon. Put back into the microwave to melt the cheese or place the cauliflower under the broiler for a few minutes.
The discussion takes us through the "why" of the goals set in episode 13. Gretchen reveals she is more externally motivated. Pete doesn't understand as he is internally motivated. See where the disagreement comes in? In the end, they get each other and Pete, thankfully, learns a lesson.
Pete stumbles a few times in this one which they found funny and left in unedited. Gotta be authentic!
