What does it really take to start and to lead a nonprofit? How can we overcome the fear that comes with asking people for money? What about the "haters" - the people that will never believe in what you do?
Let's learn from one of the best. Rachel Muir is one of my absolute favorite people. Her confidence in her voice is always inspiring, as is her journey to where she is today. When she was 26 years old, Rachel Muir founded the nonprofit Girlstart in her living room, with $500 on a credit card. Girlstart is a non-profit dedicated to empowering girls in STEM.
Several years later, Rachel had raised over 10 million dollars and was featured on Oprah, CNN, and the Today show. OPRAH!
Right now, Rachel has one of my favorite email newsletters in the sector, with frequent pop culture references, animated GIFs, and lots of passion that translates right through the screen. She loves helping fundraisers raise more money and delight their donors.
Here are some of the topics we discussed:
A Rachel Muir quotable: "If you are a fundraiser and you are overworking yourself and not taking a break to do their interesting quirky things you love that fuel you - remember that those things are good for your sanity and they are also part of what makes you fascinating to your donors."
