Following a clerkship with Chief Justice William Rehnquist at the United States Supreme Court, John tried successfully several hundred cases and arbitrations, including representation for the People’s Republic of China in their first U.S. litigation. He declined any further representation of the PRC after the massacre at Tiananmen Square and the death/disappearance of many innocent Chinese people. John has repeatedly been selected into Best Lawyers® and appeared in several hundred television and radio shows on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, Fox Business, and MSNBC. He has appeared on the Laura Ingraham, Joe Scarborough and Allen Colmes, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, and Chris Matthews shows. John is a kidney donor, survivor of four separate types of cancer and proud father, husband and grandfather.

In the early 90s, Fink ran VR pioneer Virtual World Entertainment. Previously, he was a VP at Disney, SVP at AOL, and President of AG & Blue Mountain. He teaches XR at Chapman University in Orange, CA.

What is happening to the California dream? For some it still comes true, but for many, and perhaps most Californians, the state increasingly fails to provide ample opportunities to start a business, buy a home or move up to the middle class. The state’s performance on these issues is the ultimate test of the ‘California model’ and its validity for the rest of the nation.

We face two seemingly discordant realities. In technology, culture and lifestyle, California remains the envy of the world. The state’s aggregate economy—its GDP—has continued to grow faster than the national average, in large part due to the enormous surge of wealth created in the tech sector, where California is home to 53 of the country’s 500 largest firms and four of the country’s seven most valued firms, all in tech.

California’s 2020 $3.2 trillion GDP would make it the world’s fifth largest national economy if it were a standalone country, just behind Germany. It accounts for 14% of the US GDP, while our 40 million people account for slightly under 12% of the country’s population. The Golden State, by that metric, still punches above its weight. Yet for most Californians, the economic reality is far from rosy. Even as the state creates an ever-higher number of billionaires—24 added just last year—California workers have not shared in the prosperity. Nearly 80% of all jobs created in the state over the past decade paid less than the median income, a percentage far below our prime competitors. The inconvenient truth is that in key metrics such as housing costs and income growth, most Californians are doing worse than their counterparts elsewhere.

Overall, California now underperforms its main competitors, notably Arizona, Texas, Washington and Utah in many sectors of the economy—manufacturing, professional business services, construction and energy—that once provided steady, high-wage employment. The loss of major corporations in distribution, engineering, aerospace and technology also has eroded our economic diversity and key sources of long-term, middle-class employment.

Andrew Deye Deye is managing director of strategy and business development for JobsOhio, a private nonprofit tasked with bringing jobs and investment to the state by attracting, and keeping, businesses.
For Deye, JobsOhio, which he joined right after graduating from the Kennedy School, represented an opportunity to pursue his interest in public-private partnerships. The organization’s achievements so far include successful projects with more than 1,600 companies since 2011, involving 140,000 new job commitments, along with more than 400,000 jobs retained. But beyond the impressive numbers, this has also been an opportunity for him to do something with greater social impact after an early career spent in investment banking, and to help rebuild and reinvent his native state.

Bill Carpou is the current chief executive officer of OCTANe and a partner in Visionary Ventures. Prior to joining OCTANe as CEO, Mr. Carpou was the Managing Partner for TheGreyGroup which he founded and focused on revenue growth and operational improvement for early stage companies. From February 2010 through September 2014, Mr. Carpou served in an operating partner role at the Blackstone Group including leading a key portfolio company, RGIS. Mr. Carpou was recruited to this position by
Blackstone and was responsible for all aspects of revenue including sales,
marketing, channel expansion, strategic alliances, acquisitions and customer service.

Batya Ungar-Sargon is the deputy opinion editor of Newsweek. Before that, she was the opinion editor of the Forward, the largest Jewish media outlet in America. She has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Newsweek, the New York Review of Books Daily, and other publications. She has appeared numerous times on MSNBC, NBC, the Brian Lehrer Show, NPR, and at other media outlets. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her new book, "Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy" is available on amazon.
