On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by President Emeritus of Chapman University, Jim Doti, to discuss the state of the US economy and the recession.
Doti joined Chapman’s faculty in 1974 and founded the Center for Economic Research in 1978 (which became the Gary A. Anderson Center for Economic Research in 1997). He was appointed dean of the School of Business and Management – today’s George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics – in 1985 and served twice as Chapman’s acting president in 1988 and 1988-89. He co-authored two textbooks and co-edited a collection of readings that received the Templeton Award for Scholarly Excellence. While serving as president, Doti continued his academic research, focusing not only on econometric forecasting but also on demand and pricing for higher education. His articles have appeared in professional journals as well as the Wall Street Journal and Chronicle of Higher Education. He also has held the university’s Donald Bren Distinguished Chair in Business and Economics since 1999.

On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by Ashwin Rangan, CIO of ICANN, and Rand Simberg, aerospace engineer to discuss the future of space.
Ashwin ("Ash") Rangan joined ICANN as Chief Innovation and Information Officer (CIIO) in March 2014. He joins the ICANN staff with over 20 years of experience serving in progressive capacities up to the Head of IT in a variety of organizations, both very large and relatively small. Ash is known as a visionary, strategist and leader in applying creative and innovative IT solutions to the ever-evolving needs of businesses and organizations. He has served as CIO at several well known brands such as Rockwell International, and Wal-Mart and most recently at Edwards Lifesciences. He is a sought-after expert in defining, developing and delivering high-value process innovations.
Rand Simberg is a former project manager with Rockwell International having previously worked at the Aerospace Corporation. At Rockwell, he worked on a number of advanced concepts, including solar power satellites, launch and orbit transfer systems, space tethers, and lunar resource utilization. He has been cited as an expert in space transportation by the (now defunct) Office of Technology Assessment, and has provided key input into a number of space policy reports. He was editor of the Space Activists' Handbook (a publication of Spacepac) for several years. For the past eighteen years, he has been the President of Interglobal Space Lines, Inc., a commercial space entrepreneurial company and consultancy, specializing in low-cost space access and tourism. He has dual degrees in engineering from the University of Michigan (concentrating in astronautics) and a masters in technical management from West Coast University, in Los Angeles. He writes regularly at PJ Media, The New Atlantis, and occasionally at National Review. He blogs regularly amd maintains his own weblog on space policy and a range of other topics at www.transterrestrial.com. He has also written for Popular Mechanics.

William (Bill) Amelio was the Chief Executive Officer of Avnet. He has more than 35 years of management and industry experience and has held senior positions at global publicly traded companies and has spent most of his career managing global technology enterprises. In July 2016, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Avnet.
Bill was the President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of CHC Group Ltd., a global helicopter services company, from 2010 to 2015. From 2005 to 2009, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Lenovo. Prior to his role at Lenovo, Bill was a Regional Senior Vice President and President, Asia-Pacific and Japan for Dell Inc. He began his career with the Microelectronics Technology Division of IBM in 1979 and later became the General Manager, Worldwide Operations of the Personal Computer Division. In 2019, Bill was elected to the S&P Global Board of Directors.
Bill previously served on the Board of Directors of National Semiconductor. He has a chemical engineering degree from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in management from Stanford University.
Bill and his wife, Jamie, founded and continue to lead Caring for Cambodia, a nonprofit organization that works to educate the children of Cambodia through building schools, training teachers and providing for basic human needs.

Soledad Ursúa is a principal at Orinoco Equities. She is a Los Angeles native, and an elected local official of the Venice Neighborhood Council and resident of Venice Beach.
Stewart was formerly managing editor of L.A. Weekly. She’s also served as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Buzz and New Times Los Angeles, where she focused on urban affairs, education and the environment. A longtime Southern California journalist, Stewart earned a Master’s degree in journalism from Stanford University. Stewart was formerly managing editor of L.A. Weekly. On this episode of Feudal Future, hosts Joel Kotkin and Marshall Toplansky are joined by American writer, Michael Lind, to discuss the new wave of American Leadership.
Michael Lind is a professor of practice at the LBJ School. A graduate of the Plan II Liberal Arts Honors Program and the Law School at The University of Texas with a master's degree in international relations from Yale, Lind has previously taught at Harvard and Johns Hopkins. He has been assistant to the director of the Center for the Study of Foreign Affairs at the U.S. State Department and has been an editor or staff writer for The New Yorker, Harper's, The New Republic and The National Interest. A co-founder of New America, along with Walter Mead, Sherle Schwenninger and Ted Halstead, Lind co-founded New America's American Strategy program, and served as policy director of its economic growth program. He is a former member of the boards of Fairvote and Economists for Peace and Security.
Lind has published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The International Economy and the Financial Times. He is the author of more than a dozen books of nonfiction, fiction, poetry and children's literature, including several that were New York Times Notable Books of the Year. His studies of U.S. history, economics and foreign policy include The Next American Nation (1995), The American Way of Strategy (2006), Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States (2012) and The New Class War: Saving Democracy from the Managerial Elite (2020).

The nonprofit alliance of business networks is a grassroots advocacy powerhouse that advances policies, projects, and pragmatic solutions that benefit working Angelenos and the health of the economy. BizFed is unique in its successful organization and unification of more than 225 organizations representing 410,000 companies employing 5 million people throughout the greater Los Angeles region. Its first franchise sister organization, BizFed Central Valley, mobilizes another 80 united groups from Bakersfield to Fresno.
Tracy and her close-knit team are proud to amplify the voices of a vast array of employers and civic leaders, large and small, representing all sectors and communities. Their work impacts decisions at all levels of government.
BizFed has grown in scope and impact since its launch in 2008. Tracy also founded and oversees BizFed Institute and BizFed Political Action Committee. The Institute is a 501(c)(3) that acts as the data center and educational arm of BizFed. The PAC identifies, trains, and elects pro-jobs candidates and is the only business political action committee focused on local elections in all 88 cities in L.A. County.

Robert Bryce is a Texas-based author, journalist, podcaster, film producer, and public speaker. Over the past three decades, his articles have appeared in numerous publications including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, National Review, Field & Stream, and Austin Chronicle.

Alex Trembath is Deputy Director at Breakthrough. He is the lead or coauthor of several Breakthrough publications, including Coal Killer, Beyond Boom and Bust and Our High-Energy Planet. He is also co-director of Breakthrough Generation, the Breakthrough Institute's annual summer policy fellowship, which brings together some of the brightest young thinkers in the world to work together researching policy, politics, and technology. Alex came to Breakthrough by way of Breakthrough Generation 2011.
Alex helps coordinate Breakthrough’s research, communications, and events. His writing has been published bySlate, Issues in Science and Technology, the Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Forbes, Politico,Bloomberg, and elsewhere. His research and analysis have been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg, Forbes, E&E News, CNN, and other major media outlets.

John graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 and, after decorated service in Vietnam, finished as the top graduate of The University of Texas School of Law. Following a clerkship with Chief Justice William Rehnquist at the United States Supreme Court, John tried successfully several hundred cases and arbitrations, including representation for the People’s Republic of China in their first U.S. litigation. He declined any further representation of the PRC after the massacre at Tiananmen Square and the death/disappearance of many innocent Chinese people. John has repeatedly been selected into Best Lawyers® and appeared in several hundred television and radio shows on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, Fox Business, and MSNBC. He has appeared on the Laura Ingraham, Joe Scarborough and Allen Colmes, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, and Chris Matthews shows. John is a kidney donor, survivor of four separate types of cancer and proud father, husband and grandfather.

Rony Abovitz is an American entrepreneur. Abovitz founded MAKO Surgical Corp., a company manufacturing surgical robotic arm assistance platforms, in 2004 and recently acquired by Stryker for $1.65 billion. Abovitz is the founder of the Mixed reality/Augmented Reality (MR/AR) company Magic Leap and served as its CEO from its founding in 2010.
Charlie Fink is a Forbes Columnist, and the Author of Remote Collaboration & Virtual Conferences (2020), Convergence (2019) and Charlie Fink's Metaverse (2017). In the early 90s, Fink ran VR pioneer Virtual World Entertainment. Previously, he was a VP at Disney, SVP at AOL, and President of AG & Blue Mountain. He teaches XR at Chapman University in Orange, CA.
