  • Tips on Becoming a Better You with Damien Rider #70

"Heart of the Sea" by Damien Rider #70

This was the most difficult podcast episode I had to title as it could have been titled so so many things, due to the insights and knowledge Damien dropped. His tag line reads: 'Triumph over adversity', overcoming PTSD, trauma and adversity is something Damien does as good as most. An incredible individual focused on surpassing his own mental and physical capabilities each and every day. A TedX speaker, an author, an ultra athlete world record holder but more important, at least in my eyes, a true humanitarian.

An individual who has experienced trauma via child abuse in his own days, has now turned his life into inspiring and helping others cope. He is not someone who hashtags key phrases, but rather someone who spends time actually taking time out of his day to make an impact. To support survivors and those he can. A truly delightful experience for myself, to have connected with someone who inspires me and shows me that anything is possible.

The YouTube Video is also live, although the sound waves of the oceans and horses in the background may distract you!

    Key timestamps:

[05:15] Damien Story of overcoming Child Abuse

[08:45] Humanitarian acts of making a difference, for Child abuse awareness

[11:20] Tips on how to achieve your goals or overcome your adversity

[16:20] Everybody has their ups & downs

[21:15] Fun Part of the Show

    [24:30] Damiens Final Message

    Key Quotes by Damien:

    "Test yourself daily"

"People forget the challenges that they have gone through life.."

"I have taken away the words, try, fail & impossible and replaced them with do, learn & possible"

  • Overcoming Your Childhood Trauma #67

"I'm Still Here" by Mike McBride #67

Mike is an infectious human being who shares his vulnerabilities and story to the world, to not only escape his own thoughts and release but to help other people. Mike has recognised through him sharing his story and finding his voice, post surviving child abuse. A sincere man, with a purpose to let people know they aren't alone and that there are ways of overcoming trauma as a child, or any abuse we may suffer.

He also discusses some incredible points around, intentional living and how this would enhance the happiness and fulfilment for all of us. Amongst this, we discuss the need to do the work on ourselves with specialists when trauma is the problem. The healing, the overcoming of shame and coming out the other side is necessary but it requires work. Real, hard work that sometimes we may want to avoid or shy away from. But only until we feel the wound can we heal the wound, as the great Robin Sharma quotes.

An absolute pleasure to have Mike on the show and I thank him for his transparency and words.

    Key timestamps:

[05:00] Mike sharing his child abuse story through blogging

[08:25] Child abuse is NOT your fault.

    [09:40] Why me?

    [16:28] Living Intentionally

    [22:22] Dissociating yourself from abuse

[28:45] Fun part of the show

[33:55] The Story of Dunkirk - "All we did was survive"

    Key Quotes by Mike:

"We do the things we want to do, and don't do the things we don't want to do" [Intentional Living]

"It's not your fault' [On being abused]

'These people were going to hurt someone. They were broken, they were damaged and they were looking for someone to hurt...And I just happened to be in the space when it happened" [On being abused]

I urge you all to please follow Mike and support his amazing journey.

  • Why Men Should Talk - Mens Mental Health #66

"Take care of yourselves and more importantly of each other. May your god bless you and if you don't believe in god, believe in yourself because someone who doesn't believe in anything, will always be lost" - Kev Dillon

The Black Country Blokes Podcast Host Kev Dillon stops by! #66

Kev Dillon is one of the greatest human beings I have the pleasure to call my friend. A man refusing to be defied by his disability of only having 7% vision, he spends his waking hours not only battling with his own thoughts and mind, but even more inspiringly he helps others as much as he can.

He is a coach, helping children as young as 7, a loving father and husband and just a genuine soul who refuses to let the adversities life has thrown at him keep him down. A boxing lover, he uses the analogy of getting back up when life hits him and coming back for one more round.

But why Kev came on today, was just as important for me as it was for him. Kev has helped me out of a dark place recently, but he has also helped 100s of others with a new venture he has started. The Black Country Blokes Podcast.

This is something I have the privilege of being a part of, with 2 other amazing guys Lee Cadman and Craig Pinches. But Kevs work on this is second to none. Having found his voice he is now receiving heart felt messages from people all over saying how the episodes have truly changed and helped them so much.

Someone who's actions match his words and only who ever preaches what he is too willing to do himself. A friend, a brother, a father, a husband, a coach and just an overall great man who is now making a dent in the self-help mental health space with real life experience and raw and honest truths.

The Black Country Podcast links are below and I urge you all to follow these, men and women!

  • Stabbed & Clinically Depressed at 15 to Finding Power in Empathy #65

"Change 1 world every single day" by Ally Salama #63

Ally Salama is a Social Entrepreneur, Speaker, Podcaster, Ex Pro Athlete who is a mental health ambassador. His work has stemmed from suffering with clinical depression himself. Something he openly admits to never understanding before being diagnosed with it himself. However, depression forced him to take a look at himself and in turn, address his own motives and understand himself on a deeper level. Now creating a huge movement and raising awareness in the Middle East for mental health Ally's message is sincere, authentic and powerful. He is changing the conversation around mental health.

Ally has also had his fair share of adversity, from being stabbed at 15 to recognise the true gift and gratitude of life we all have today. He is now determined to never let that blessing of being alive become forgotten, for he is actively now aiming to change 1 world every single day through empathy. He is a people person, someone who after 2 hours of conversation will remain a friend for life. He, similar to myself, preach empathy and compassion and by putting people first, over anything else will result in bigger rewards, higher fulfilment and more happiness.

  • 3 Books to Help You Overcome Worry, Stress, Anxiety & Find Your Purpose #64

3 Books to Help You Overcome Worry, Stress, Anxiety & Find Your Purpose #64

I have read many books over the years, but very few have had such a profound effect on my life. These 3 books have massively helped me level up and served me well. They have helped me deal with my emotions, anxiety, stress and make better informed decisions. On top of that they have provided tangible actions that I can implement daily whilst motivating me to want to do and become more too.

I can recommend 100s of books that offer similar messages, but these 3 came straight to mind when I thought about the stages of my life where I was able to really level up and use the wisdom in these pages. They also differ from the obvious "Think & Grow Rich, As a man thinketh and other popular books people love to read".

If you want to check these out, I've provided links below:

    BOOK 1

The Chimp Paradox - Dr Steve Peters

    https://amzn.to/38rMOfR

This book will help you control your emotions to help you act in your own best interest when you make decisions.

“The Person that you want to be is, the person that you really are” - Dr Steve Peters

    BOOK 2

How to stop worrying & Start Living

    https://amzn.to/2YHrw9p

This will help you put stop losses on stresses and grief. It will help you when you suffer with overwhelm or confusion. Allow you to manage today, not consumed by yesterday or fearful of tomorrow.

“You can sing only what you are. You can paint only what you are. You must be what your experiences, your environment, and your heredity have made you. For better or for worse, you must play your own little instrument in the orchestra of life.”

    BOOK 3

The Power of Purpose: Les Brown

    https://amzn.to/35duPaL

This is about finding your purpose, hence the title. But it is about getting out of your own way, writing your own story, overcoming your obstacles.  It will force you to question yourself and your current situation. It will also help you:

Experiencing your freedom and power, focus on your greatness, guard yourself against negativity and live each day being true to yourself.

"Ask yourself, What do I really want out of my life?" - Les Brown

I hope this episode and books add value to your life in the same way it added to mine.

  • How to Create The Life You Actually Want by Nate Bailey #63

"Integrity Bank" by Nate Bailey #63

Nate is a man of many talents. A successful entrepreneur, real estate investor, speaker, coach and author. Along with many other talents and avenues he has pursued such as podcasting, serving his country in the war and running 100 miles (ca. 161 km) at once! But one thing from this interview that really stuck out for me, was his authenticity and integrity. Nate is a man of his word, who has used his life experiences to not only level his own life up and reach a life he is proud and happy with, but he also now helps other people too.

Recognising there has to be more to life, Nate went on a personal journey of transforming his own life. He did this by banking all the things he said he would do, into what he calls the Integrity Bank. Then through consistent actions and staying true to his word, he has achieved some incredible feats that have not only built his resilience but also his experience that he now shares with the world.

Super intentional behaviours and being clarity on all aspects of his life, Nate has really managed to mould his life into a place he is now happy with. One that now gives him a meaning, but is not just about him. Using his own words, of: "It's not all about you" Nates honest story showcases the journey of life many of us go through. We rarely have it figured out, however we can figure it out if we put the work in!

5 Ways to Be Happy, Backed by Science #62 - By Aren Deu

So Happiness is the #1 goal for us all. There is nobody I have yet met in this world who does not want to be happy. Yet we often forget that this is the key, and we chase elusive goals or pursuit materialistic things that serve us no real long term purpose or fulfilment.

So what I did was do a bit of research and find 5 proven happiness hacks that you can literally implement today, to help you improve your overall mood and live a much better life.

    The 5 are:

    1. Becoming aware and recognising your good & bad emotions
    2. Social Connections
    3. Master something + Progression
    4. Know when to say No
    5. Spend money on experiences & not things!

Now whether these are new to you or not, these work! So I need you to recognise them and really try to implement them in your day to day life. I promise you they will help you move the needle forward in your life.

Reach out, if you are ever having difficulty too, I am always hear to act as a soundboard as and when time permits.

  • Addressing Suicide Prevention & Mental Health with YouTake10 founder Chelsea #61

"Kindness matters, matched with uncomfortability" by Chelsea Von #61

The journey of finding one's individual purpose is crucial for us all to really understand what we are meant to do in this very short space of time on this Earth. For Chelsea, this came through seeing her parents battle with mental health, bipolar disorder and seeing her own mom tragically take her life. Chelsea has had to grow up quicker than most and deal with her own mental health having seen the ill effects that it can have, not just on day-to-day life but also for those of us who struggle to continue. Now starting her initiative of the YouTake10 Project,

Chelsea is trying to change the conversation and to create and spread awareness of kindness, compassion but more so, ensuring she addresses the mental health and suicide stigmas that exist.

This was our first ever live YouTube recording, where you will see mistakes, nervousness, but raw genuine conversations about what we both believe can help people move forward. Chelsea shares her deepest vulnerabilities and stories to hopefully spread light and help others recognise that they are not alone. That together we are strong, with kindness and compassion and together we can learn to manage our own well-being better, so that we can then serve others much better.

I urge you all to please follow and support this amazing project, The YouTake10 Project. It is one that I feel strongly about and believe will change the future for so many people.
