  • Moxie Chat: Cherika Johnson * Driven. Determined. Loyal.

Today’s Moxie Chat guest is Cherika Johnson.

She is a native of East Texas for over 30 years who graduated from LeTourneau University with a degree in Business Administration. She has been a licensed Realtor since 2007 and obtained her Broker’s License in March of 2016.

In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering, mentoring, and giving back to her community.

During our chat, we talk about the power of connecting with other women, how important mentoring is, and how she is learning to ask for what she needs.

Without further ado, here is Cherika!

    1. How do you define SUCCESS?

When you are at peace with the efforts you put forward and the obstacles you overcome in order to live out your passion.

    2. Share the THREE WORDS that describe you BEST and why!

    Driven, Determined, Loyal.

Driven describes me because I don’t wait for things to happen in my business, I work hard to make them happen because I am passionate about what I do. I am determined because I aim to succeed in a field where people don’t make me feel I belong maybe because I don’t fit the description of what their idea of what a successful Realtor/Broker looks like. I am loyal to my family and my friends. I am a big cheerleader for all things dealing with my family and friends.

    3. What is the best advice you have ever received?

Get outside of your comfort zone. The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek

    4. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

Growing up, kids would call me ugly, so for years I was afraid to look in the mirror at myself. If I passed a mirror, I could not look in it, especially in public.

    5. If you could go back 11 years – what would you tell yourself?

    NETWORK! NETWORK! NETWORK!

    6. What is one habit you are trying to build?

In this business, I understand the importance of videos for marketing and I would like to get in the habit of doing videos for marketing. (The reason I probably can’t get in the habit just yet, lies in the answer to question #4)

    8. What does MOXIE mean to you?

Being told “NO” or told you can’t, but you do what it takes to do it anyway, and in heels!

    9. What does a “perfect day” in your life look/feel like?

The perfect day for me is any time spent with my husband and family doing what we want to do. I have a son playing college baseball, and my youngest son does theatre locally, so when I’m attending whatever event they love doing or playing, I am in my happy place!

    10. What is your ONE WORD for the next 12 months? Why?

Connections! Since comfort zone is two words and I couldn’t use it, Connections is something I need to make more of while I’m outside of my comfort zone. Last month, I met so many new connections at the Woman UP! conference who have reached out to me since I have been home, and have given me advise I wouldn’t have considered had I not met them. I never knew the importance of connecting with other Realtors because no one had mentored me to tell the importance of doing things like joining Realtor affiliate organizations. I have since joined WCR since attending that conference and hearing from the ladies at the conference how important it is!

  • Spill the Tea: Working From Home With A House Full Of People

This week’s topic is “Working From Home With Your Partner/Spouse”!

We share breathing techniques and cover these 5 points and more:

1: Be honest with each other.

Name and embrace the change. Ask for what you need… don’t expect your partner to read your mind. Darlings, this isn’t going to be easy and there is no way to get around it.

Being together now 24/7 can be very disruptive to one of both of you.

My best advice: Create separate workspaces. Make sure your partner knows exactly when it’s OK to enter that space and when it’s not.  In my home, it is as easy as 1-2-3.

OPEN DOOR: Come on in, ask me anything, anytime.

CLOSED DOOR:  Please don’t disturb me, but IF IT CAN’T WAIT, knock on my door, wait for my welcome in, and then ask/share efficiently and clearly.

FLASHING CUBE: Signals I am recording or on a call and can’t be disturbed. Knock on this door and I will be upset – unless it is an emergency and the house is on fire.

2: Set check-in times with each other.

This helps everyone with engagement expectations and created something for the super social spouse to look forward to each day!

    • Morning coffee and schedule review?
    • Take a mid-morning walk?
    • Share lunch together?
    • Enjoy an afternoon walk?
    • Tea and talking about the day?
    • Prosecco and planning tomorrow?
    •

3: Protect the Introverts. Adopt the Extroverts.

Please do not depend on one person for everything you need.

If you haven’t already, start to schedule video chats with others.

Extroverts, please hear me/us – if you live with an introvert, please tread lightly here. Especially if they have been working from your home solo before the SIP.

      • Take some time tonight to reach out and schedule zooms for coffee, lunch, happy hours, book club, brand practice, karaoke, etc with your friends.
      • Schedule zooms with your family. Mine has done virtual tea parties, happy hours, and morning coffee together.
      • If you have co-workers you were interacting with a lot at work – be sure to keep those relationships nurtured.
      •

4: Give Yourselves Grace on Grace on Grace.

Any relationship, no matter how solid, can be strained if you’re spending all day every day together under one roof.

We are HUMAN. We need grace.  Give it to yourself if you get sassy with your partner, to your partner if they get snarky with you, and shower each other if one of you has the BLG’s . (Bored, lonely, grumpy’s)

        Recognize your triggers.

Define ways to have fun together while you are SAFE AT HOME TOGETHER.

You’re in this together and giving each other grace along the way is how all of us will get to the other side.

5: Treat your partner as you would a co-worker during work hours!

Pretend your boss or God is standing in the room with you. Seriously. This really helps you treat each other with a higher level of respect during this tenaciously trying times.

          1. Don’t leave dishes in the “break room” sink.
          2. Save dinner menu or TP chats for after work hours.
          3. Respect each other’s boundaries
          4. If there is a stain on their shirt – tell them before they go LIVE on a video chat. lol
          5.

How are you surviving and thriving in this season together?

          8. Release The Fear. A Special #SIP2020 Affirmation + Truths

Today’s episode contains a special #MoxieAffirmation for this time of sheltering in place with our beloveds during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I intentionally bring and breathe life into every room I enter.

I release the fear and embrace faith, gratitude, and hope.

Friends, I believe it is always the season to embrace faith, gratitude, and hope.

And right now, more than ever – we need to embrace all of it boldly and bravely.

There is a feeling of uncertainty in the air inspiring us to slip into fear, worry, and anxiety… let’s feel those feeling and promise each other we won’t stay in them.

Instead, let’s encourage each other to slip into other things like into our cozy slippers, and comfy pj’s. Let’s hop on video chats to sip hot tea or divine wine together… snuggled on our couches or cuddled by our fires to reflect upon all we are grateful for in our lives – right now.

There is ALWAYS something to be grateful for – in every single season.

Today, I want to share some ways to take care of yourself and keep your soultank full while you do your best to remain calm in the chaos of uncertainty.

            1. BE FIERCE about surrounding yourself with positive people and words.

Who are you talking to or texting with every day? Are they focused on doom and gloom or sharing best practices for thriving in this uncertain season? Do they honor or share your values and support you in your values-aligned decisions?

What are you reading and listening to every day?  Are you focused on only reading the news or your manic, uncontrollable social media feed?

Your feelings are manifested and nurtured in your environment. If you want to feel more focused, more passionate, and more driven, or more grateful, more positive… surround yourself with conversations, quotes, podcasts, and books that inspire those feelings.

You’re here with me, so we are connected – that means you’re getting a weekly shot of positivity and moxie. Do some binging of the weekly affirmation podcasts… those are sure to shift your mindset!

How about other podcasts you’re listening to?

I started to corral some of my favorite podcasts by Lionesses in this community.
You can find them over on debratrappen.com/fave-lioness-podcasts.

A few not on that list yet:

Brene Brown’s newest called Unlocking Us.
Her interview with Glennon Doyle about her new book Untamed was riveting.

            Super Soul Conversations w/ Oprah

Free Cookies w/ Kate Fagan and Kathryn Budig

(I always belly laugh when I listen to this show!)

If you have a fave, let me know in the comments below!

            2021 update:

Check out the top 20 books/podcasts/blogs from 2020:
            debratrappen.com/my-20-in-2020

            2. Ditch the senseless hustle.

            Slow down.

            Enjoy each moment.
            Take a DEEP BREATH.
Ditch the senseless hustle mantras and soak in life.

Right now, release the need to plan or control every minute.

Let the pillow and blanket forts stay up overnight…all week long.

Let the kiddos and dog toys stay scattered.

Let it go. Let it go.

If YOU need an organized space for your sanity – rally your family and tell them what you need. Don’t expect them to read your mind. Ask them to help you keep your shared living spaces tidy and give everyone (who can walk while carrying one) a box or laundry basket to collect their things before bed and then don’t worry about their rooms being perfectly tidy – for now.

Also, put down your phone and experience life.  Not everything needs to be recorded – especially not all of the bed heads that haven’t showered for a few days during the quarantine! Well, a few pics of those won’t hurt anyone and they will make great shots for the wedding slideshows in the future.

If you haven’t taken the time – please take a moment to identify and manage YOUR stress points.

Is there constant news playing on your TV or Alexa?

Consider implementing the NewsSquad idea I shared in the last podcast.

Are you impacted by all of the NOISE in your home all day?

Create quiet time sessions and a reward system to say thank you when they keep it to a low roar. This Nurture and Thrive blog post shares great ideas on how and why to start quiet time in your home!

Are you exhausted by making ALL of the meals?

Again, ask for help. Tell people what you need. Set new standards.

Consider sitting down with your family and/or quarantine partners and discussing these questions:

              • Which meals are together?
              • Which are fend for yourself?
              • Who is in charge of which meals?
              • The morning person manages breakfast, the night out does dinner, and there is a new town favorite called PBJ’s right now for lunch. Choosing a consistent lunch that you can make ahead of time will make it so much easier.

Also, think about having a place (a shelf, a basket, a drawer) where HEALTHY snacks are easily accessible and kids can grab and go without asking you! Also, make a rewards drawer, too. A place you can send them for a treat when they rocked an assignment or picked up their mess. It could be their favorite foods, coupons that allow them to choose the next movie, be the next leader of the family walk, extra screen time, stay up late, choose dinner, spend time alone with you, pick the next game for game night, and so on.

Give each other grace. Now is the time for rewarding the behavior you WANT TO SEE, not punishing the naughtiness.  You are stressed with the perspective that this too shall pass. Kiddos are stressed out AND they don’t have the perspective you have on what is happening… keep this in mind when you get frustrated.

                3. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

One of my favorite collaboration partners and Lioness sister, Molly McKinley, shared a couple of amazing breathing techniques in our FB Live “Spill the Tea” episode on March 25th.  Head to 29:00 in and breathe with us! If we aren’t connected on FB yet – here is the link:

                https://www.facebook.com/debra11/videos/10159299341793765/

Breathing helps you slow down your mind and calm your nerves.

If you have a hard time slowing down your mind, try this fun technique.

Kick-off those cozy slippers and start wiggling your toes – really concentrating on scrunching them up, moving your big toe only, etc…

When you do this – you don’t think about anything else.

Try it… it is an awesome way to slow your mind down and BE in the moment.

(Are you trying it right now, too?)

Do this with your kiddos… and get ready to hear the cutest giggles! :)

Oh… and now that those slippers are off – how about painting those cute piggies a fun new color?

                4. Say thank you, smile, and wave more often.

                Spreading joy is free.

                A few things to consider:

                • Write it in a thank you note to those who have lifted you up the last couple of weeks.
                • Pop on Facebook and post a gratitude note on a friend’s wall. Share a favorite photo of the two of you and why that moment was the one you chose to remember today!
                • Since we aren’t stopping to say hello to neighbors on our walks (to the joy of introverts everywhere!) so be sure to adopt the wave and smile! Smiling, waving, even a gentle nod when passing each other on the street helps others feel seen and cared for. Remember, there are people sheltered in place ALONE. They are in desperate need of human connection in this time of quarantine… and you may be the only face they see today!
                •

I would love to hear how you are bringing and breathing life into your rooms and sprinkling gratitude and moxie-filled glitter wherever you “safely” go.

                  xxoo,

1: What are we doing to lower stress and anxiety right now?

2: There is so much focus on negativity! What are ways to focus on the positives? What are the positives?

3: Let’s talk about content! What are we consuming, creating and repurposing -and how?

                • Yes, I Have Toilet Paper.

                  Hello, Friend.

                  How are you?

I want to talk about something with you. I have been getting ooooooodles of calls and notes sharing how hard it is to stay positive right now.  Watching everything happening in our world and not giving in to the fear is an ART FORM. It is hard to separate fact from fluff… I get it. Not to mention the new set of questions in my life that inadvertently plant seeds of fear – if I let them.

Am I scared of living in the vortex of the virus? (I am 5 miles from Kirkland, WA!)

                  Am I practicing “social distancing”?

How am I dealing with having to postpone the WomanUP! event in Boston next week?

And a multitude of bizarre questions around…

“Do I have enough toilet paper?”

Yes. These are just some of the new conversations starters that seem to be on repeat these days for me.  I’m not going to pretend that I have not experienced moments of worry or concern or fear. I do. It’s natural.

Like these friends, you may be looking for tips and resources on how to pull yourself out of the fear-filled thoughts swirling around in your head.  I want to share what happens when I get those questions and encourage you to do the same.

I start by answering each question as best I can and then, in true moxie style, I flip the conversation to what I have gained and what I am looking forward to – in this season. Do you see what I see on this list?

                  1. Time to rest.

                  2. Time to breathe deeply, stretch longer, and meditate more.

                  3. Time to honor my 2020 word: PERSPECTIVE

                  4. Time to heal after the loss of my loving furball companion, Niko.

                  5. Time to take more walks with my husband and our sweet Lizzie pup.

                  6. Time to write and edit and refine my next book.

                  7. Time to unpack my travel kits and organize them.

                  8. Time to unpack my suitcase and give it a well-earned time out.

                  9. Time to listen to all of those Audible books in my queue!

                  10. Time to talk on the phone with family and friends.

                  11. Time to BE STILL.

Please take this time to slow down, reconnect with your family, call or FaceTime your friends and have afternoon tea or wine and catch up, learn to meditate longer, start that workout program you have been putting off, give yourself a facial at home – and get your spouse and kiddos involved – heck, make it a spa night!

Lioness, simply take the time to sit and drink an entire cup of coffee without having to heat it up because you got lost in work again… can I hear an AMEN?!

What does YOUR list look like?

Friend, I also want to share  five fun ideas that will bring joy to you, your family, and your community:

                  1: Support Your Local Businesses

If you are not going out to eat right now, still buy gift certificates from your favorite local restaurants. You can order them online or call to buy one to use later. This will help them so much right now AND you have a fantastic future date night in your future.  Many of them have also added a “drive-thru” option where you don’t even need to go inside to get your meal.

You can also go online and purchase those cooking or yoga classes you have been dreaming of, the belly-dancing class you have always wanted to sign up for, or the pole class JLo inspired you to try during the SuperBowl half-time show!

What are your ideas here? Please share them in the comments below.

                  ps.

Before you bring up the topic of cash flow – let me remind you of this. You are saving money on gas, dry cleaning, eating out, and Starbucks – so you likely DO have the money to invest in some self-care, my friend.

2: Morning Walks and Game Nights

What are you doing with the daily “commute + prep time” you usually invest?

Are you letting work swallow up those hours?

If so, please consider slowing down to insert self-care and family time instead.

Instead of missing the hustle, embrace the space.  Instead of looking at what you’re missing at work, reconnect with your kiddos.

I encourage you to replace your normal daily ”commute and prep time” with a fun nature walk with your family! Grab your cameras or mobile devices and head out for a photo tour in your neighborhood. Seeing the beauty in the blossoms of SPRING in the daylight or hearing the frogs at night will bring peace into your home and help quell the fear and anxiety.

Turn your evening commute time into GAME NIGHT TIME! Laughter heals fear.

                  Two of my current favorites:

Salad Bowl – thank you, Vanessa Bergmark! I have not laughed that hard in a LONG time!

Heads Up! by Ellen (you can use your phone or iPad for this one!)

What are your favorite games? Drop them in the comments!

3: STOP the Non-Stop Listening to the News (you know who you are!)

Create a #NewsSquad of 7 people. You can each take ONE DAY a week and report back any major news to the group, as needed. Cutting the constant fear-mongering, market-tanking, pandemic-filled news out of your home at least 6 days a week will do you all good!  You already feel better thinking about doing this, don’t you? *wink*

4: Check-in on Your Senior Neighbors

Call them up and ask them if they need anything. If you go grocery shopping for them – wipe it all down and leave it on their doorstep. Mow their lawns. Water their plants. Love on them.  They are scared and need to know someone is looking out for them.

                  5: Embrace Gratitude, Not Panic

Take action and focus on what you can control.

Celebrate what you do have, not what you are afraid might be taken from you.

Taking time each day to embrace what you are THANKFUL FOR is an excellent way to shift the fear-filled energy in your life.   If you have always wanted to take the time to create a gratitude jar, start a gratitude journal, or take a gratitude challenge – now is the time. This is another awesome way to invest the time you would normally be traveling to and from work! Doesn’t turning that into gratitude and self-care time sound DIVINE?

My friend, I pray you don’t choose to live in fear.

Let now be the time we collectively open our eyes and our hearts and live out loud what our spirit has always known… we are in this together. Take the time to uncover the lessons in each moment, live and engage with a compassionate heart, and safely support your community right now. These actions will help us all heal from this and thrive on the other side.

Yes, we are all in this together. Whether you are healthy, carrying the virus, have experienced symptoms, are in the hospital, or have lost a loved one – we are all connected and in this together.

Whether you believe there is a pandemic or not, we are all in this together.

Everything we do right now is for our own health AND the physical and mental health of others around us.

                  Let me repeat that.

Everything we do right now is for our own health AND the physical and mental health of others around us.

Friend, there is nothing weak or pathetic about staying home and hunkering down with your family right now.

                  Work from home.

                  School from home.
                  Eat at home.
                  Play at home.
                  HEAL AT HOME.

…and remember, taking time each day to embrace what you are thankful for is an excellent way to shift the fear-filled energy in your life.

Sending prayers, love, and moxie-filled light your way.

                  xxoo,
