  • I am bursting with energy! – Affirmation 38

This week’s affirmation is about serving others -generously and joyfully..

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I am bursting with energy and overflowing with joy.

My light will illuminate and inspire others around me!

We’ve talked about this before, and it’s important to mention it again. If you are not feeling like you are bursting with energy or overflowing with joy – even after you say this out loud – that’s ok.

It is important to be REAL and honest with yourself.

If you want more energy, here are 6 ways to give yourself a boost and fill your soultank with JOY:

1: Acqua. Agua. Voda. Ama. Eau. Wai. Mizu. Pi. Vann. Apa. Pape. Amanzi.

No matter the language – water is an excellent way to keep sluggishness away. The struggle with dehydration is REAL. It leaves you feeling drained and fatigued. If you’re feeling thirsty you’ve waited too long and are already dehydrated… Get ahead of your thirst and grab a glass of pure joy every few hours.

I take my water to 11 by adding in delicious flavors like: basil, rosemary, peppermint, cucumber, lemon, lime, fresh berries, watermelon… whatever is in the fridge or garden that looks yummy! I also add in sparkling water (I love my soda stream!) to give it an extra kick that helps wake up the taste buds, too! Serve yourself in a fun Kerr jar, a sassy stemmed glass, or whatever your smile-infusing, fave cup is… ooooooh!! Add in a fun straw (I love my custom, reusable glass straw created by local artisans! Check them out here. https://www.drinkingstraws.glass) and sip away!

What do you put in your water?

    2: Cinnamon or Peppermint!

For some, a quick sniff of the sassy-scented spice cinnamon reduces fatigue and adds a zing to their step. I love the taste of cinnamon in my coffee and brownies – alas, after a decade of working in cosmetics during the holidays and zhoozhing displays of The Scent Of Christmas by Aromatique(a heavy cinnamon scent) – I don’t enjoy sniffing it.

If you are not a cinnamon-sniffing gal like me, peppermint is an excellent go-to pick-me-up. I especially love to use it before business calls or stepping on stage.

If you add essential oils to your water – beware of drinking too much peppermint. If you suffer from heartburn due to GERD, drinking peppermint can actually relax the sphincter muscle which closes off the stomach from the esophagus. This can cause stomach acid to pour back into the esophagus and make heartburn or GERD worse. And THAT won’t put a spring in your step!

If you have a scent that boosts your energy – hit reply and share it with me!

3: Shake Your Booty… or at least get it vertical!

Exercise is a natural energy booster. Moving throughout the day, even if you can spare only 11 minutes at a time, will help elevate and moderate your energy levels.

    Can’t get outside?

    • Walk around the kitchen island when you’re on the phone. (Bonus: clarity and creativity abound when you walk and talk)
    • Choose the bathroom farthest away from your office and take the stairs to get there.
    • Grab a hairbrush, crank up your favorite tunes, and sing along while shaking your tooooooosh.
    • Stand at your desk or move to the kitchen counter so you can stand at home!  I use a ladder in my Fire Up! Studio and it has all sorts of options for standing and sitting – hooray!
    • 4: Let the Sun power you up!

Yesssssss, Lioness! Get outside to stand in and soak up the sunshine. If the sun prefers to hide above the clouds like it does here in Seattle – pop a Vitamin D3, open the front door, and step outside for some fresh air.

They also have nifty lights that mimic the sun for those who fight SAD! Have you tried these?

5: Start your day with Yoga Sun Salutations.

Sun Salutations are a great way to energize your mind and body first thing in the morning. They improve blood circulation, purify your blood, strengthen the physical body, help remove energy blockages through intentional breathing.

      Read more on them here.

6: Lean on your Lioness Pride!

You’ve heard it here and beyond – many times. Who you surround yourself with MATTERS.

When you choose to hang out with upbeat friends, their positive attitude and joy-filled energy are contagious.

If you surround yourself with negative people constantly – you can expect a constant energy drain.

      Yes, it is your choice.

Go forth and choose wisely Lioness.

      xxoo,

    • Moxie Chat: Meet Portia Allen * Passionate. People. Smile!

Today’s divine guest, Portia Allen, is here to share her fierce, fiery soultank filling wisdom. Let me share a bit about her:

Portia LOVES Jesus and people. She is a “happy to be” extrovert who thrives on being with others.

She often uses the phrase: “You’re my friend and I love you!”

Portia is married to the love of her life, Clinton Allen. They have three amazing BOYS and live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Yes, my home state!) I love how she adds, “there is way more to this state than the cold.” Amen, sister – AMEN!

Portia has been in ministry for 9 years and leads alongside her husband Clinton at River Valley Church in Minnesota under their lead Pastors Rob & Becca Ketterling. She has had the opportunity to speak in Minnesota and across the country and is passionate about uplifting and empowering women.

Her goal as a friend is to cheer you on into what God has created you to be and remind you of the truth we so often forget…God is absolutely FOR YOU because he LOVES YOU.

During this chat, we talk about FAITH, how people give her LIFE, the Sparkle Conference where we met through our friend Cill, and the exciting new project she is involved in – She Speaks Stories podcast!

      Moxie Chat Highlights:

      1. How do you define SUCCESS?

Success to me looks like the people I’m around being encouraged either by something I have done or said(small or big). It also feels like my heart at peace regardless of my circumstances.

      2. Share the THREE WORDS that describe you BEST and why!

      People– I LOVE them!

Smile– Triggered by seeing other people and it’s a pretty big one. ;-)

Passionate– Whether its something I enjoy doing, people in my life, or something in need of justice, I’m ALL IN.

      3. What is the best advice you have ever received?

When trying to make a decision, if you do not have an absolute directive from God and it doesn’t contradict his word, make a choice with confidence knowing God is with you.

      4. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

      I enjoy having time alone.

      5. If you could go back 11 years – what would you tell yourself?

Ask for help when you need it.

      6. What is one habit you are trying to build?

      Memorizing Scripture WITH references.

      7. How do you make a difference in your client’s lives?

Hearing them and reminding them the truth of their situation through the filter of God’s word, even if I don’t tell them, “This is what the Bible says.”

      8. What does MOXIE mean to you?

Class with a healthy dose of sass. Carrying yourself with confidence with the ability to show up for others, especially when they are unable to do it for themselves.

      9. What does a “perfect day” in your life look/feel like?

A perfect day for me would begin with the following:

*Wake up to a clean house at least an hour before my kids are awake :-)

*A leisure quiet time with coffee and the Lord

        *A clear schedule

        *A sunny day

        *Breakfast/Lunch with my Hubs

        *Family dinner and a movie

      10. What is your ONE WORD for the next 12 months? Why?

Trust- I am walking into new spaces both in my career and family life, so there are places of uncertainty. When I feel uncertain or anxious, I remind myself to CHOOSE to trust.

      11. Do you have a new book, product, or service launching soon?

I would love to write a book someday.

I am a NEW HOST on the She Speaks Stories Podcast. My first episode will launch soon and I will share the link as soon I have it!

    • Seeking Opportunities To Lift Others UP! – Affirmation 37

This week’s affirmation is about serving others -generously and joyfully..

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I am created to serve generously and joyfully!

I seek opportunities to lift others up every day.

To get us rolling, I put together a handful of ways we can all start serving and living generously.

1: Clean out your closets and donate to others in need.

There are so many joy-filled moments in this one! You are clearing out the clutter from your space and making margin for what blessings are coming next. You are blessing someone you will never know with what you are releasing. ALSO – you are (likely) honoring at least one of your core values. For example, these values would be beautifully aligned with donating: making a difference, community, family, compassion, organization…

Oh, and don’t forget, to check and see if you get a tax deduction for an added bonus!

If you have not defined your Core Values, download a free exercise on my site at: debratrappen.com/valuesexercise

I recommend reading this book to guide you: The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning

I am going through this now… and it is wonderful. ;)

2: Create Blessing Bags for the homeless.

Don’t want to give cash? This is an excellent option. My hubby and I have these in our car and they are usually accepted with a huge smile and thank you! I will share a full list of the things we have put in ours over in the show notes!

We use a gallon-size zipper-lock plastic bag and put in:

      • A bottle of water
      • Socks
      • Gloves – depending on the season
      • Mini Toiletries from all our hotel stays
      • Tuna and crackers
      • Granola Bar or cereal bar
      • Fruit snack or applesauce cup
      • Crackers with peanut butter or cheese
      • Gift certificate to fast food
      • Hand wipes/sanitizer
      • Pack of Kleenex
      • Maxi pads/tampons (grab an extra one from your hotel stays!)
      • Toothbrush and toothpaste
      • Nail clippers
      • Band-Aids
      • ~ Chapstick
      • Comb or small brush
      • Mints, cough drops or gum
      • Touch cards that share the addresses of local shelters
      • Note of encouragement
      • 3: Mentor someone.

You have something special to give. You have a unique set of experiences that someone else would love to learn. Don’t wait for someone to ask you to be her mentor… be bold and share with her what’s on your mind! Ask her if she would love to share time together learning from you and see where it goes!

The WomanUP!® Movement has a wonderful mentorship platform we run through our closed Facebook group! If you are in the real estate industry and are seeking to learn or teach someone how to open, run, or lead a brokerage – join us! The link is in the show notes!

        4: Volunteer your time.

What causes are important to you?

What talents do you have to share?

Whether it is cleaning up your neighborhood, caring for pets at the local shelter, or sharing time at the local senior center playing cards, singing karaoke, or doing magic to entertain them – your soultank will be overflowing from this precious time!

An added bonus: if your “day job” doesn’t tap into your creative, musical, magician self – this time will do the trick!

        5: Spread LOVE!

Put together a THINKING OF YOU package for a loved one across the miles and send them smiles!

Don’t want to put it together yourself? Instead of sending flowers, consider sending a Gift Box from Intentionaliteas!

Use the code FIERCE when you check out for a sweet discount from Molly and Stacey!

Don’t have any extra budget for goodie boxes? Make a call… Send a text… Pop a love note or postcard in the mail…

Lioness, starting now, focus on lifting up and serving those around. It is going to feel so good.

        I dare you!

      • Moxie Chat: Meet Valerie Alexander * Speaker. Author. Screenwriter. * Part One.
“If you create a workplace where people are only trying NOT TO FAIL, they will never succeed. They’re never going to innovate. They’re never going to take a chance.”

Today’s guest, Valerie Alexander, is here to share her fierce, fiery soultank filling wisdom.

NOTE: This is part one of a two-part interview series.

During this first chat, Valerie and I talk about who our culture values (this is so good!), how she holds it together in a room of CEO’s when she hears absurd things, and banter about how the buying power and leadership skills of women can’t be denied any longer.

        Read more about her:

Valerie Alexander is a tech CEO, speaker, author, publisher, and screenwriter.

She is the founder and CEO of Goalkeeper, a technology company that builds communication bots to amplify happiness. Their first product is the Happy Couples Bot — a personal communication tool that takes the guesswork, the frustration and the passive-aggressiveness out of couplehood by reminding each person of what their partner likes and loves about them, and what they might need more of from the relationship.

Valerie’s books include Happiness as a Second Language: a Guidebook to Achieving Lasting Permanent Happiness, an Amazon #1 Seller in the Happiness and Self-Help categories, Success as a Second Language: A Guidebook for Defining and Achieving Personal Success and How Women Can Succeed in the Workplace (Despite Having “Female Brains”), based on the popular talk she’s given at companies, colleges and conferences across the country. She hold the U.S. Registered Trademark on the phrase, “…as a Second Language” for the self-help and personal growth space, and under that title, publishes works by other authors, including Parenting as a Second Language, Creativity as a Second Language, and soon-to-be-released books on Grief, Aging, Marriage, Dating and other topics.

Valerie’s keynotes, seminars and workshops have entertained, trained and inspired entrepreneurs, artists, lawyers, truck drivers, doctors, investment bankers, managers, students, homemakers and CEOs from coast to coast.

She is also a screenwriter, and has worked with Joel Schumacher, Catherine Zeta Jones, Barry Sonnenfeld, Ice Cube and others. As a professional moderator, she has interviewed more than a hundred of Hollywood’s top stars, writers, directors and artists, including Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Sean Penn, Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Chris Nolan, Annie Mumolo, Simon Kinberg, Tom Hooper, Luc Besson, Michelle Yeoh, Jason Reitman, Tom McCarthy, John Wells, Michael Moore, Brian Helgeland and Kurt Sutter.

Valerie made her directing debut with the award-winning short film, Making the Cut, and as a committed equality activist, she is the creator, producer and director of “Say I Do,” “Life Support,” and “The Wedding Matters,” three highly successful commercial campaigns in support of everyone’s freedom to marry.

Prior to becoming a screenwriter, Valerie was an IPO lawyer, a venture capital consultant and an investment banker in theSilicon Valley, and the V.P. of Business Development for two new-media start-ups in Hawaii and Los Angeles, respectively.

Before entering the professional ranks, Valerie worked as: a horse wrangler; an algebra teacher; a runway model; a semi-professional soccer player; a tutor for the developmentally disabled; an amusement park supervisor; an SAT, GRE & LSAT prep teacher; and the world’s worst waitress.

Valerie received her B.A. from Trinity University and her J.D. and M.S. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.  In the spring of 2010, she was invited to Berkeley Law to teach the legal ethics seminar, Representation of Law in Film, and in May of 2016, she was the commencement speaker at Trinity University.

Valerie has been married to writer-producer, Rick Alexander, since 2006.  Valerie and Rick live in Los Angeles, CA, with their ill-mannered German Shepherd, Vegas.

      • What do you say when you look in the mirror? – Affirmation 36

This week’s affirmation is encouraging you to look in the mirror.

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I am confidently looking in the mirror and wholeheartedly saying I LOVE YOU to my divine reflection.

        Let’s repeat this one.

If you can look in a mirror – please do so as you are repeating it. Look deeply into your eyes… into your soulful center.

It isn’t enough to say this… you must embrace and believe it. DEEP INSIDE.

I love listening to Dr. Caroline Leaf and other neuroscientists and neuropsychiatrists talk about the brain. They have studied our noodles and found that humans have a negative and self-critical part of our brain – it is called the Anterior Cingular Cortex. I dug deeper into this and what stopped me in my tracks is that this part of the brain is actually larger and more influential in females – making many females more self-critical.

As a result, my dearest Lionesses, the hormone fluctuations in our brains create a fierce ripple that takes our bodies and our self-confidence on a negative rollercoaster-like ride.

Even more interesting is that there are women who, despite their femme brain wiring, still radiate confidence and practice self-LOVE… naturally. It isn’t impossible.

Here are a few of the common threads they share that you can focus on this week to help build your reflection-loving muscles:

1: She recognizes the beauty of her imperfections.

The naturally confident woman embraces her physical flaws, is not afraid to admit those imperfections, and does not define herself by them. In other words, those imperfections don’t overshadow all of the wonderful things she loves about herself.

It is time to look at your lumps and bumps. Stop avoiding your reflection. Start recognizing the scars on your chest or chin are part of your story and do not diminish the beauty of those features you love most about yourself!

2: She lives by a clear set of values and sees it in her reflection.

If you have been listening to my podcast fora  long, read my Fire Up! Book (grab your copy here), or have heard me speak at a conference – you KNOW how passionate I am about you taking the time to define your core values.  When you carefully choose the values you live by and infuse them into your life with enthusiasm – you are unstoppable.

Today, stand before a mirror and see your divine core values in the reflection. Celebrate what you bring into this world through your passion for making a difference, mentoring the next generation, and creating experiences that bring others joy.

3: She gives herself the same filter and grace she gives others.

This one is my favorite. Are you ready for a question that is going to rock your world?

When was the last time you stopped being friends with someone because of their scars, weight, or acne?

Seriously, WHEN? (Okay, this question always makes tears well up in my eyes!)

I will go out on a limb and guess the answer is NEVER.

You have never ditched a friendship because of the way a friend looked.

Soulful people don’t love others because of what they look like – we love them because of who they are and who they are becoming.

For heaven’s sake, if we can do this for others, why not do it for ourselves?

Starting today, love yourself like you love your best friends.

Encourage yourself to love yourself like you do for her.

Lioness, my heart’s desire is for you to love all of who you are and be able to look in the mirror and authentically love what you see.  I am so fired up for you to start this journey today. I am in your corner and sending prayers, positive energy, and ooooooodles of virtual hugs your way!

        You’ve got this.

        xxoo,

      • Choosing Peace Over Pressure – Affirmation 35

This week’s affirmation is encouraging us to choose PEACE.

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I wholeheartedly and intentionally choose peace over pressure.

        Go ahead… do it again!

Lioness, I know we are in a society that teaches us pressure is normal. Hustle is rewarded. Working 24/7 is supported with technology and celebrity endorsements. Pressure is often sold as a necessary ingredient to success. We need to hustle and hurry to “make it”. Many of us have told ourselves that discipline and motivation had to look ONE WAY – the “up at 4am or you aren’t really in the in it to win it lane”.

This is a lie. We can create margin for and do all of the things we want to and need to – without the stress.

The first step in choosing peace over pressure is recognizing what pressure looks and feels like. Slowing down to understand what triggers it so you can start to make decisions filled with peace – earlier and earlier in the process. The warning signs for me are obvious – when I am paying attention. I get irritable (oh, my cranky pants are seriously three sizes too small!), I get nasty headaches, I fall away from my faith to worry and live in my own strength… I take my backpack of “stuff” back from God and carry it myself – which ultimately showed up as fierce fatigue. When fatigue shows up – it is a HUGE FLAG because I am blessed with divine energy.

Now, recognizing all of these doesn’t always stop me from denying it or trying to power through. I have to work at it. I have to remind myself to give the backpack BACK!

However, now that I understand what pressure feels like, I am able to stop and visit my PEACE method with a twist.

I have shared how I believe intuition is an essential life skill we must all embrace and learn to refine and nurture. Feeling and recognizing what you are about to do will be filled with pressure and not peace is no different.

Here is the P.E.A.C.E. process – built out into an acronym – with that twist I mentioned.

        First, P.

P stands for Pause:  Take a moment and pay attention to what you are feeling.

E is for Examine: Ask yourself: “Will this bring me peace or add more pressure?”

A is for Assess:  Now it is time to weigh your choices. Which is more important RIGHT NOW – peace or pressure?

C is for Choose:  Yes, you have the option to choose wisely. Not every single decision you make will be peace-filled and that’s a reality. Sometimes, a deadline or meeting is going to be bursting with pressure.  The beauty of this process is that you are consciously aware of the repercussions of your choices! You can prepare yourself and those around you for what to come instead of becoming a leader wearing cranky pants that are 3 sizes too small!

E is for Execute: Now you can confidently and intentionally integrate the activity, nurture the relationship, etc., knowing it will add value to your life – in alignment with your core principles and desire to infuse more peace and less pressure.

Lioness, start implementing these steps into your days this week and feel the difference. Celebrate when you recognize the pressure and make better choices. Give yourself grace when you don’t. Embrace and boldly brace for the moments you must choose pressure… and revel in the knowledge that you have created the margin and prepared for moments – just like this.

      • Decisions That Make Your Future Self Proud – Affirmation 34

This week’s affirmation is about recognizing that today’s decisions determine our success tomorrow.

Are you ready? Repeat after me:

I will make decisions today that will make my future self proud.

        Let’s say it again!

I will make decisions today that will make my future self proud.

Are you ready to step up and be part of designing a magnificent life that honors your fabulous, fierce, feisty, focused self?

Here are some steps you can start implementing and practicing this week:

Step 1: Know what you want and where you want to go!

The best way to make a confident decision is by knowing your goals. When you’re more aware of what you want out of your life, you are able to make better choices.

When you get ready to make a decision, stop and think… Where do I want to be in a year?

        Ask yourself:

Will this decision take me in the direction I want to go?

Will this affect me positively or negatively?

If the answer does not align with or support your goals and dreams, reassess your decision. Lioness, not every answer will perfectly align with your visions and goals. Please give yourself grace when you make those. Get up, shake it off, and move forward.

Step 2: Listen to your intuition.

Whether you believe it or not, the force is strong within you. You have the power inside to fully know yourself better than anyone else.

In my experience, when I ignore what my intuition is telling me it is usually because I don’t want to face the reality of the decision I have to make. It’s scary or makes me uncomfortable. Even as someone who loves change, I can be held back by my own thoughts.

In order to really listen in, try this exercise.

Write down each thought you have about the decision you have to make – the pros and the cons!

Then, write down WHY you think you’re feeling the way you do.

The answer usually shows itself pretty clearly.

Step 3: Be kind to yourself.

If you are willing to learn how to do this, you will soar. You’ve heard me say this before – YOUR thoughts and words are the ones you hear most. Being kind to yourself increases self-confidence and lessens your need for approval.

Lioness, loving and caring for yourself not only strengthens self-trust, it also deepens your connection with others. When you confidently you allow yourself the ability to feel better about making big decisions in the future.

Step 4: Know the worst-case scenario.
One of the women I met during my work with the LEXI Women’s Conferences, Theresa Fette, shared this amazing technique.

Simply put, when I am making a big decision, I stop and imagine the worst-case scenario. If I can live with it or come back from any negative repercussions – I move forward.

If the risk is too high, I return to the drawing board to find another way.

Here is the video filled with straight talk from my friend, Theresa.  Her LEXI talk contains practical advice on being fearless through being afraid… and at 11:00 she shares a fabulous story showcasing the “Worst Case” technique!

        Video link: https://vimeo.com/95170642

Step 5: Choose and follow thru.

Trusted, influential, moxielicious leaders do more than talk – they make and implement decisions. Don’t get stuck in the decision loop (also known as) “analysis paralysis”! If you always want and wait to discuss it a little bit more or gather just a few more facts, you will never reach your potential.

You know it as well as I do… At some point, you have to make the decision and move forward. If it ends up being the wrong decision,n then change course and try again!

Failing forward and failing FAST is better than not starting at all.

Lioness, the one sure way you’re going to get better at making firm, intentional decisions is by making intentional decisions every single day. When you start making this part of your daily practice, you will feel more confident in your actions and decision-making skills.

And yes… Your future self will thank you!

      • You Are Responsible For The Energy You Bring – Affirmation 33

This week’s affirmation is about being responsible for our energy.

        Ready? Say it out loud:

I am responsible for the energy I bring to every room I enter.

        Before I walk in…
        my thoughts are collected
        my feelings are connected,
        my words are respected.

Go ahead and repeat it, if you wish.

Let it soak into your soultank…

Lioness, this week’s message is short and sweet.

You are 100% responsible for the energy that you create for yourself.

You are also responsible for the energy that you bring to others.

I encourage you to do what you need to do to take care of yourself so you are able to bring your best energy with you.

If you’re not feeling it and your cranky pants are taking over – stop, take a time out and fill your soultank. Go to your list of things you love to do and do one or two things for yourself. Combine them for a triple shot!  Schedule a wine day with your friends where you can listen to live music. Make a tea date with your Mum and reminisce over old photos. “Kidnap” your love for a mid-day movie and get extra butter on that popcorn – without guilt!

You won’t regret showing up as your best self and being kind to others.

You don’t need to feel guilty for treating yourself with love.

You can’t always say the same about those times you barked at or shamed someone while you were in the middle of a personal tantrum.

One last note: you are also responsible for choosing the energy you ALLOW in YOUR space.

        Choose wisely, my friend.
