Peanuts

我们屋后有半亩隙地。母亲说：“让它荒芜着怪可惜，既然你们那么爱吃花生，就辟来做花生园罢。”

Behind our house there lay half a mu of vacant land. Mother said, “It’s a pity to let it lie waste. Since you all like to eat peanuts so much, why not plant some here?”

我们几姊弟和几个小丫头都很喜欢——买种的买种，动土的动土，灌园的灌园；过不了几个月，居然收获了!

That exhilarated us children and our servant girls as well, and soon we started buying seeds, ploughing the land and watering the plants. We gathered in a good harvest just after a couple of months!

妈妈说：“今晚我们可以做一个收获节，也请你们爹爹来尝尝我们的新花生，如何?”我们都答应了。

Mother said, “How about giving a party this evening to celebrate the harvest and inviting your Daddy to have a taste of our newly-harvested peanuts?” We all agreed.

母亲把花生做成好几样食品，还吩咐这节期要在园里的茅亭举行。

Mother made quite a few varieties of goodies out of the peanuts, and told us that the party would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot.

那晚上的天色不大好，可是爹爹也到来，实在很难得!

It looked like rain that evening, yet, to our great joy, father came nevertheless.

爹爹说：“你们爱吃花生么?”

“Do you like peanuts?” asked Father.

我们都争着答应：“爱!”

“Yes, we do!” We vied in giving the answer.

“谁能把花生的好处说出来?”。

“Which of you could name the good things in peanuts?”

姊姊说：“花生的气味很美。”

“Peanuts taste good,” said my elder sister.

哥哥说：“花生可以制油。”

“Peanuts produce edible oil,” said my elder brother.

我说：“无论何等人都可以用贱价买它来吃；都喜欢吃它。这就是它的好处。”

“Peanuts are so cheap,” said I, “that anyone can afford to eat them. Peanuts are everyone’s favorite. That’s why we call peanuts good.”

爹爹说：“花生的用处固然很多；但有一样是很可贵的。这小小的豆不像那好看的苹果、桃子、石榴，把它们的果实悬在枝上，鲜红嫩绿的颜色，令人一望而发生羡慕的心。它只把果子埋在地的，等到成熟，才容人把它挖出来。你们偶然看见一棵花生瑟缩地长在地上，不能立刻辨出它有没有果实，非得等到你接触它才能知道。”

“It’s true that peanuts have many uses,” said Father, “but they’re most beloved in one respect. Unlike nice-looking apples, peaches and pomegranates, which hang their fruit on branches and win people’s instant admiration with their brilliant colours, tiny little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they’re ripe. When you come upon a peanut plant lying curled up on the ground, you can never immediately tell whether or not it bears any nuts until you touch them.”

我们都说：“是的。”母亲也点点头。

“That’s true,” we said in unison. Mother also nodded.

爹爹接下去说：“所以你们要像花生，因为它是有用的，不是伟大、好看的东西。”

“So you must take after peanuts,” Father continued, “because they’re useful though not great and nice-looking.”

我说：“那么，人要做有用的人，不要做伟大、体面的人了。”

“Then you mean one should be useful rather than great and nice-looking,” I said.

爹爹说：“这是我对于你们的希望。”

“That’s what I expect of you,” Father concluded.

我们谈到夜阑才散，所有花生食品虽然没有了，然而父亲的话现在还印在我心版上。

We kept chatting until the party broke up late at night. Today, though nothing is left of the goodies made of peanuts, Father’s words remain engraved in my mind.

A Pickle Pot

母亲从乡下来，住了十天。临走时，她老人家想为我们添置一件东西，目个纪念。

Mother came from our home village. She stayed with us for ten days. When she was about to leave, she wanted to buy us something as a present.

母亲说：“你们什么都有，又好像什么都没有。

"You've got everything," she said, "but you seem to have got nothing.

电视机是你们的，里面走来走去都是些陌生的人，有时候，杀人犯、贼、贪官、小偷也在里面出出进进；

The TV set is yours, but the people who walk back and forth in it are all strangers, even murderers, corrupt officials and thieves come in and out of it from time to time.

收录机是你们的，可尽是人家在唱歌；

The radio cassette player is yours, but it's all others who sing in it.

书架上的书是你们的，可那都是别人写的字；

The books on the shelf are yours, but they are all written by others. 

电冰箱是你们的，一年四季都装一箱不知从哪里落下的霜。

The fridge is yours, but all the year round it's filled with frost that comes from God knows where. 

方便是方便，可就是没有一样是你们自己的。”

Though they make your life easy and comfortable, none of them belongs to you in the real sense of the word. "

走的那天，母亲起了个早，从街上抱回一个泡菜坛子。

On the day she was to leave for home, she got up early in the morning and brought back a pickle pot from the market.

她说：“在坛子里腌一些菜吧，调调自家的口味。”

"Make some pickles in it," she said, "and have something that suits your own palate."

我们的家里，从此有了泡菜，有了自己的味道。

Since then pickles of our own taste had been added to our diet. 

朋友上门，我们时常以泡菜佐酒，微醉中，大家就会说：“乡下的味道，不错；不错，乡下的味道!”

When we had guests, we often had pickles to go with wine. Slightly intoxicated, everyone would comment, "A country flavor, not bad. Not bad, a country flavor."

于是我们大家都有了自己的味道。

So we had something to our own taste. 

再看那泡菜坛子，静静地守在资阵里，在喧嚣的日子，在钢筋混凝土的单元里，守着一坛平静的心情，酝酿着古老而纯朴的乡下味道。

When we looked at the pot, it was standing quietly at the corner. Amid the hustle and bustle of our everyday life and in the apartment of reinforced concrete, the pot stood there by itself, brewing an old and simple flavor.

Something to Look Forward To

细娃盼过年，大人盼开春。儿时，对于大人的盼是不能理解的，

Little children look forward to the arrival of lunar New Year, adults to that of spring. When a child I couldn't understand what the elders hoped for. 

但过年，对我来说，可是一年的大盼头了。过年，不但好玩，且有肉吃，那气氛是迷人的。

But New Year's Day was always the greatest red-letter day of all the year, for it meant the nicest food as well as a lot of fun, which was really fascinating. 

年一过，又盼日子快些流，好流来又一个春节。

As soon as the festival was over, another one was my dream and I wished time flew as fast as possible.

在盼中，日子真的流得飞快，转服上了小学，继而初中，然后高中，最后大学；

Days spent in expectation come and go really very fast. Very soon I finished primary school, went to junior and senior middle school, and finally to college;

盼的欲望更加强烈，盼的内容也越渐丰富了：盼有好成绩毕业，盼有一份好工作，盼事业有成，盼挣钱替父母分优，盼有一个好爱人……

-with ever greater desire for more varied things: for graduation with honours, for an ideal job, for a successful career, for more earnings to share my parents' burden, for a satisfactory wife...

不知不觉，天天踩着盼的石阶而上，自己竟成了一个大男人，一个挣钱养家糊口的忙碌人了。

Climbing the upward steps of hope I had become a fully grown man before I was aware of it, a busy breadwinner with a family on my hands.

生活开始变得复杂。然而，无论自己是否变得庸俗，变得伟大，盼头依然天天有：

Life began to show its various facets. Whether I have turned more vulgar or great, I have always something to look forward to.

盼信件，盼稿件被采用，盼发奖金，盼某事有满意结果，盼一次聚会、一次旅行……人就在盼中找到了依托。

It may be arrival of a letter, publication of an article, the bonus-distributing day, a gratifying result of something, a get-together or a pleasure trip. . .Such expectations serve as a prop to a person's faith in life.

没有盼头的日子是苍白不可想象的。人，得天天有点什么盼头，生活才不至于暗淡。

A day without hope would be unimaginably pale. There must be something to look forward to each day to brighten one's life and keep it out of shadows.

有了盼头，会觉得太阳每天都是新的。不管是望梅止渴，还是画饼充饥，它都会激励你不停手中的桨，去追逐哪怕一星微小的火光。

To a person cherishing hopes every morning rises a new sun. Even if it is a fantasy or an illusion, so long as it shows a ray of hope it still urges you on in pursuit of that little sparkle without letup.

土地去掉水分，就成了沙漠；人没有了盼，还剩什么?

Deprived of moisture content, soil turns into desert. Deprived of hope, what is there left to a person? 

小盼头支撑人的一天，大盼头支撑人的一生。

A small hope sustains a person for a day, a great one for a lifetime.

人，是绝不能没有盼头的。

Human beings cannot do without something to look forward to.

You ride straight into the sun, the sun will not turn back for a full five years.

The wind keeps whistling a quickstep tune.

将落日的光环挽在肩上，越来越庞然沉重的影子领我，慢慢回家。

The halo of the setting sun curls around my shoulder, my shadow, growing huge and heavy, leads me slowly home.

经过你家的小巷口，石条路还是那么湿漉漉，不时从黑糊糊的门洞传出泼水声。

Past the entrance to your little lane, the stone paving is still so damp, the sound of splashing water from dismal cave like doorways. 

一辆走过很长旅途的红色自行车，斜倚在广告牌前寻求休息，时髦女郎脸蛋脏兮兮地微笑着。

A red bicycle, which has traveled a long, long way, rests askew in front of a billboard, the cheeks of the fashionable girl grinning filthily.

锅铲刺耳地刮着铁锅，油烟和卤鸭的香味顺着一盏浊灯弥漫开来，夜摊上市了。

Spatulas scrape across woks; the smell of oily smoke and stewed duck spreads with the turbid light of a small lamp. The night market is open for business.

被遗弃的最后一抹余晖，还在犹豫，终于不胜悲哀地沿着水锈和苔斑的高墙游走，没有谁挽留。

A last abandoned smear of fading daylight hesitates, but finally deeply drifts away with the high rust-and-lichen-mottled wall, and no one tries to make it stay.

三十五年来，你从蹒跚学步到青春期白跑鞋的舞步终于走出了这条狭窄的小巷，走向一片开阔的港口。

For thirty-five years, from halting first steps to the youthful dancing gait of your white sneakers, you have been getting out of the wide mouth of this narrow little alley.

你真的不回头吗？

Will you really not turn back?

啊，你不回头是因为小巷所洞悉的你的幻灭的往事你不愿带走？

Ha, the reason you don’t turn back is because you don’t want to bring the vanished past of you the alley knows so well?

You don’t turn back on account of the neon lights rotating rhumba, tango, round after round, so you naturally can’t absorb plain moonlight?

黄昏的记忆真是拥挤呀。

Dusk memories crowd in.

四月，太平岩，我们在泉水边。

April. Taiping cliff. We’re beside a spring.

你衔着一根草茎，断断续续哼着一支《土拨鼠》，这是一支欢快、幽默的小曲子，它跟四月的阳光、鸟鸣、水声是那样和谐，但从开着星星点点小黄花的草丛里望过去，你双肘撑在地上，一双又黑又大的眼睛盛满痛苦、柔情和怅惘。

You twirl a stalk of grass, idly humming “The Marmot,” it’s a happy, funny little tune, fitting so well April sunlight, birdsong, the sound of water. Only, looking across the yellow flowers open like little stars amidst the grass, you are propped up on your elbows with your eyes, big and dark, distracted, full of pain and tenderness.

我们都知道你，如脚边澈清的泉水、倏忽的鱼影，朗朗可见；我们无法知道你，藏匿于“黑箱”深处的凄楚，时时引吭为优雅的男高音。

We both know you, like the clean spring water by our feet, the flitting shadows of the fish, clearly visible. We have no way to know you, the starkly clear, often elegantly throaty tenor hidden deep inside the “black box.”

因此我曾经请求：“要哭泣你就哭泣吧，让泪水流啊，流啊，默默地……”

For this I used to beg, “If you want to cry then cry, let your tears flow, tears flow, quietly…”

现在没有人为我歌唱轻轻，即使满眼是泪，繁华大街，车水马龙，哪里寻一处林子、一片草地，在真挚与渠通的日光下失声痛哭？

Now there is no one to sing lightly, lightly for me, even if my eyes are full of tears, in the bustling avenues, in the traffic, where to look for a glade, a grassy slope, to cry my eyes out under straightforward, earnest sunshine?

这个黄昏是多么陌生啊！

How unfamiliar, this dusk!
