In our special we're thrilled talking to Don Vosburg and Miguel Pérez Colino about SUSE Manager and the Uyuni project. Don as an long-time user and contributor had a lot of great stories to share. Together with Miguel we had a look at the history and future of the project. Coming from the Spacewalk codebase that was published for the first time in 2008 a lot of innovation took place in the meantime. Beside various code optimizations and a new web interface, SaltStack also became central part of the product. For the future, the project will shift to container-based deployments - proxy servers are already support since October 2022.
Note: Please excuse the occasional crackles and sound dropouts. We tried to get the best out of the recordings, but apparently our travel equipment is dying.

Drei spannende Tage SUSECON 2023 liegen hinter uns! In großer Runde sprechen wir über die Eindrücke und Highlights der letzten Tage. Der für Juli 2024 geplante SUSE Manager 5.0 soll rein container-basiert erscheinen. Sowohl SLES als auch SLE Micro werden stark von ALP beeinflusst. Parallel gibt es auch Neuigkeiten aus dem SAP- und Container-Umfeld. Rancher Prime erhält als erstes Produkt AI-Funktionen und ALP stellt die Weichen für die Zukunft von SUSE-Distributionen.
Hinweis: Entschuldigt bitte die vereinzelten Knacker und Tonaussetzer. Wir haben versucht, das Beste aus den Aufnahmen rauszuholen, aber anscheinend gibt unser Reise-Equipment den Geist auf.

Debian 12 Bookworm erblickt das Licht und darauf basierend wird Proxmox VE 8.0 nach kurzer Zeit veröffentlicht. SLES 15 SP5 und openSUSE Leap 15.5 erscheinen und - zu unserer Freude - wird es noch einen weiteren Service Pack für Leap geben. SUSE Manager 4.3.6 wird passend zur SUSECON bereitgestellt, während ATIX weitere Foreman-Clients veröffentlicht. Microsoft geht unter die Linux-Distributoren und parallel gewährt Canonical einen Ausblick auf kommende immutable Desktops. NixOS 23.05 erscheint und Asahi Linux erreicht OpenGL 3.1-Reife. Bevor der Konferenz-Sommer naht, müssen wir auch über zwei umstrittene News aus dem Reddit- und Red Hat-Umfeld sprechen.

In the last part of our Red Hat Summit special we've had a fun time with none other than Máirín Duffy and Matthew Miller. Máirín gave very interesting insights on her long term UX work for various Red Hat and open-source projects such as Fedora and Podman. We also talked about the neverending year of the Linux desktop - from her point of view. Matthew provided insights on his work on the Fedora project - starting with the history we later focussed on current development and what might come in the future.

Mit insgesamt 350 Präsentationen und Workshops gab es eine Fülle von Informationen, die es wert sind, besprochen zu werden. Besonders interessant sind einige Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit Ansible, wie zum Beispiel Ansible Lightspeed, Event-Driven Ansible und Molecule 6. Die Kernel-Maintainer:innen schicken Linux 6.3 und 6.4-rc1 ins Rennen, während zwei CVEs geschlossen werden wollen. QEMU veröffentlicht mit 8.0 eine neue Hauptversion mit überschaubaren Änderungen. RHEL und AlmaLinux 9.2 werden veröffentlicht, parallel lässt Rocky Linux noch auf sich warten. An der Hochschule Augsburg findet der Augsburger Linux-Infotag statt, während Red Hat Summit und SUSECON in greifbare Nähe rücken. openSUSE ALP und SoftMaker Office suchen nach Feedback.

Darüber hinaus schickt RHEL die Betas für 8.8 und 9.2 ins Rennen und openSUSE 16 stellt die Weichen für die Zukunft. Mit trurl gibt es ein neues Tool des curl-Teams.

Der April ist der Monat der großen Überraschungen! Canonical verwundert mit unerwarteten Veränderungen in Ubuntu 23.04, während das Uyuni-Projekt seine Weichen ebenfalls neu ausrichtet. Mit vum gibt es nun einen modernen Fork des beliebten vim-Editors und auch im Land der Kompressionsalgorithmen gibt es vielversprechende neue Entwicklungen. Das Freifunk-Projekt findet eine Lösung für ein lang bestehendes rechtliches Problem der Betreiber:innen und Microsoft ermöglicht die Entwicklung alternativer Teams-Clients.
Auch wir gehen neue Wege und setzen zwei eurer Wünsche um.
