Satellite 6.14 und Orcharhino 6.6 bringen zahlreiche kleine Verbesserungen und neue Reports. RHEL 9.3 bringt neue Funktionen im Web-Cockpit und zwei neue System Roles, während sich die Übernahme von VMware durch Broadcom zu finalisieren scheint.

Der Oktober bringt nicht nur 5 gruselige Sicherheitslücken, sondern mit Ubuntu 23.10 und openSUSE Leap Micro 5.5 auch neue Distributionen. Ansible Galaxy überzeugt nicht alle in der Community von der neuen Version und Python 3.12 wird vorgestellt. Administrator:innen dürfen sich über neue Uyuni-, Foreman- und Katello-Releases freuen. Entgegen einer früheren Prognose will dieses Jahr doch noch ein neuer Raspberry Pi besprochen werden und das GNU-Projekt feiert das 40-jährige Bestehen.

Spätestens seit der Rückentwicklung von Twitter ist mit Mastodon einer der zahlreichen Fediverse-Dienste auch im Mainstream angekommen. Zusammen mit zwei Fediverse-Expert:innen und Mastodon-Instanzbetreiber:innen geben wir einen Überblick über die Weiten und Entwicklungen des Fediverse. Neben technischen Grundlagen, wie ActivityPub und das Design einer üblichen Instanz stellen wir uns auch dem Für und Wider des Instanzbetriebs. Nicht vernachlässigen wollen wir die Herausforderungen der inhaltlichen Moderation und klären auch die Frage, ob das Fediverse nicht nur für Enthusiast:innen sondern auch für Firmen ein denkbarer Boden ist.

Der Terraform-Fork OpenTF ist nun unter dem Deckmantel der Linux-Foundation als OpenTofu bekannt. Cisco kauft Splunk zum beachtlichen Tarif von 28 Milliarden Dollar. LTS-Kernel sollen zukünftig nur für 2 statt 6 Jahre gepflegt werden, Linux 6.7 begräbt mit Itanium eine weitere historische Prozessorarchitektur. Google feiert das 25-jährige Bestehen und verärgert Teile der Community mit einem erneuten FLOC-Ansatz. GitLab beginnt die Arbeit an einer ActivityPub-Unterstützung. Im September wird ein weiteres großes Jubiläum gefeiert: das Home Assistant-Projekt wird stolze 10 Jahre alt. Durch die fast unerschöpfliche Menge an Integrationen verschiedener Hersteller hat sich die Software schnell verbreitet und ist für viele nicht mehr wegzudenken. Home Assistant ist, insbesondere als HA OS, schnell in Betrieb genommen und weiß mit einer einfachen Web-Oberfläche zu überzeugen. Zusammen mit Pascal Vizeli, einem der Home Assistant Core-Entwickler, besprechen wir die Geschichte und aktuelle Entwicklungen des Projekts.

SUSE, CIQ und Oracle gründen mit openELA einen Verband, der die Zukunft für RHEL-Downstreams vereinfachen will. Vanilla OS 2 und Asahi Linux Fedora Remix werden vorgestellt. Mit AMD Inception und Intel Downfall gibt zwei neue CPU-Schwachstellen. HashiCorp verwundert mit einer Lizenzänderung und einige Google Chrome-Entwickler befinden sich auf Abwegen. Leider gibt es mit dem Tod Bram Moolenaars auch traurige Nachrichten des vim-Projekts.

Am 16.08.1993 stellte Ian Murdock mit Debian eine frische Linux-Distribution vor, die heutzutage nicht mehr wegzudenken ist. Knapp jünger als Slackware ist Debian eine der ältesten aber immer noch aktiven Linux-Distributionen, die vor allem im Server- und Embedded-Umfeld eine weite Verbreitung genießt. Für Stabilität bekannt, bildet sie auch die Basis für zahlreiche davon abgezweigten Projekten, wie beispielsweise Ubuntu, Siduction oder Univention Corporate Server. Zusammen mit einem langjährigen Contributor des Debian-Projekts werfen wir einen Blick auf die Projektgeschichte und wünschen dem Projekt eine vielversprechende Zukunft.

In den letzten Wochen wurde kein Thema so hitzig diskutiert wie der Zugriff auf den RHEL-Quellcode. Neben zahlreichen Gegenstimmen aus der Community waren auch progressive Artikel konkurrierender Unternehmen zentraler Bestandteil der Berichterstattung. Zeit, einen Schritt zurück zu gehen und auch die Perspektive Red Hats nochmal zu beleuchten.
Zusammen mit Jan Wildeboer (EMEA Evangelist, seit 18 Jahren bei Red Hat) thematisieren wir die Ankündigungen, Beweggründe und derzeit häufig gestellte Fragen. Dabei ist es auch wichtig, die Historie der jeweiligen Projekte in den Kontext zu setzen.

Statt dem Sommerloch überschlagen sich im Juli die Ereignisse: Oracle apelliert an Red Hat, SUSE forkt RHEL und AlmaLinux verändert seine Prioritäten. Das LXD-Projekt wandert vollständig zu Canonical und für Ubuntu 23.10 sind Änderungen im Software-Store zu erwarten. Proxmox veröffentlicht Backup Server 3.0 und Mail Gateway 8.0, während Fedora die Einführung von Opt-Out-Telemetrie diskutiert. Die EU billigt die Übernahme von VMware und Homelab-Enthusiast:innen dürften traurig über die Einstellung von Intels NUC-Serie sein. openSUSE gibt Einblicke in die zukünftige Roadmap und Thunderbird stellt eine neue Oberfläche vor. Zwei Jubiläen wollen gefeiert werden.
