Though we, as humanity, cause the overwhelming majority of our own suffering, God has promised that "all things work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose." That purpose is to be conformed to the image of His blessed Son, Jesus Christ, who suffered for us and left us an example in which we should be willing to walk. In fact, Paul declares His desire to know Christ not only included the power of His resurrection but also the fellowship of His suffering.
