me plaindre = to complain (reflexive). do you have a whiner, a whinger, a real thoroughbred complainer in your life? (Poor you!) But now you can describe what they do in French! “Remarque, je suis mal placée pour me plaindre” (Mind you, I'm in no position to complain.)

le défi  = the challenge. relever le défi = rise to the challenge, take up the gauntlet

je vais être prems✨(sur) = I'm going to be first. The way young French people say ‘shotgun” or “dibs”. 

ça vaut le coup ✨🧩= ça en vaut la peine, ça mérite l'effort = It's worth itIdéal pour motiver quelqu'un (ou soi-même) à faire un effort pour un résultat désirable. Face à une grande montagne à escalader: "Regarde la vue, ça vaut le coup!”. Used regularly to ask if something is worth it: “Est-ce que ce film vaut le coup ?”

jeter un œil✨ =  take a look / ‘run your eye over’ something

je me dépêche = se hâter = I'm hurrying. Running late again? "Je me dépêche" is your go-to phrase! It's the perfect way to express your rush without sounding too frantic. It's like saying, "I'm on my speedy Gonzales mode!" For instance, "Je me dépêche, le film commence dans 5 minutes!" (I'm hurrying, the movie starts in 5 minutes!)

mais évidemment ✨ = bien sûr = of course. Honestly might be one of my favourite Frenchie phrases of all time. Dropped with the right intonation and it’s just so … French. “But obviously.. (a blind man with a stick could see that/ are you a fool? / are you drunk / i can’t believe you’ve even had to ask etc etc)” .. all in one phrase.

une dinde aux marrons = a turkey with chestnuts. "Pour Noël, nous aurons une dinde aux marrons." (For Christmas, we'll have a turkey with chestnuts). The classic French Christmas.

une bûche de Noël 🔗 = a Yule log cake. "Chaque Noël, ma grand-mère fait une bûche de Noël délicieuse." (Every Christmas, my grandmother makes a delicious Yule log cake). The traditional Christmas dessert in France, Christmas puddings be damned. 

un bonhomme de neige = a snowman. "Les enfants adorent faire un bonhomme de neige en hiver." (Children love making a snowman in winter). In France snowmen aren’t just men.. they’re good men!

j'ai hâte de ✨ = je suis impatient(e) de = I can't wait to. How to express excitement about future plans or events. English speakers like saying this a lot more than French people I should note ! 😅 Shows too much enthusiasm for the French…

les voilà ✨ =  here they are! A slight alteration on the “Viola” we know and love. But don’t be scared be excited, for when you finally find something you've been searching for! Also handy when pointing out sights on your travels in France.

fais attention à ✨ = prends garde à = be careful with = reminder to be cautious. Very versatile, slippery floors, fragile objects, parting metros. “Je fais attention au vouvoiement” (I’m careful about using the vous correctly”… this is always good advice when speaking in real life!)

👂🏻Colloquial phrases to listen for:

comment c'était ✨ = How was it?. When someone asks "Comment c'était," they're inquiring about an experience. A handy phrase to use when catching up with friends. "Tu es allé à ce nouveau restaurant, comment c'était?" (You went to that new restaurant, how was it?).

scintillait ✨ = sparkled - from "scintiller’. Often used to describe something visually stunning… like Christmas lights! And Paris in Christmas is nothing if not visually stunning.

je suis tombé sur = I stumbled upon. Perfect for those serendipitous moments. Mostly used for ‘coming across’ another person while you’re getting your daily baguettes at the la boulangerie “Je suis tombé sur Eva hier”

tout ça pour dire ✨ = All this to say. A conversational bridge, “long story short." It's used when you've been chatting for a while and want to sum up your point.

les animaux de compagnie = les bêtes domestiques = petsA bit long winded but this is the way we say it! I find it quite touching actually, a literal description of what our furry friends are: animals to keep us company.

il y a quelques années = il y a un certain temps = a few years ago‘There is/there are’ yes but ‘il y a’ also has a side gig talking about the past. See here (if you’re keen). Elle avait la grippe il y a un mois - She had the flu a month ago.

grâce à toi ✨= à cause de toi (but in a good way!) = thanks to youThis is the phrase you whip out to express gratitude. It's like sprinkling fairy dust of appreciation over someone's actions. Example: "Grâce à toi, j'ai découvert ce merveilleux café." (Thanks to you, I discovered this wonderful café.)

en passant ✨ = by the way. When you just want to add a little comment or compliment into a conversation, at the start or when leaving. This is the phrase to bracket it like a pro.

briser la glace = break the ice. Same as English, easy to remember. Remember it, use it, impress the French. Simple. Language learners get through a lot of ice-breaking! So you’ll have plenty of excuses. 

ce que ça donne ✨🧩 = what happens / how it goes. Another turn of phrase that really grasps my imagination. Lit. “what that gives”, I love that.

animal de compagnie = yes, this is the standard French word for ‘pet’ 🤷🏼 Seems a little long-winded to me too. Eyes peeled in the coming weeks!

ça aurait de la gueule = Ça a de la gueule ! ✨🧩 (colq.) = C'est bien beau ! = That looks great!

fatigué dû au décalage horaire 🧩 = jetlag! Very helpful phrase to know actually, it comes up more than you’d imagine with foreign language speakers who’ve often… just arrived in France. but I always got you covered!

tout faire foirer = screw it up/f* everything up.  “Tu ne peux pas te permettre de tout faire foirer” (You can't afford to blow it).

tout rentre dans l'ordre 🧩 = everything gets back to normal/will be ok

👂🏻Colloquial phrases to listen for:

laisse-moi réfléchir 🧩✨= let me think / let me see. More formal form: “Laissez-moi réfléchir”. Another great phrase for conversation, it gives you time to think on your feet.. all while sounding like a native! What more could you want from three words?

l’esprit = partie spirituelle d'un être = the mind. Bit of a false friend this one for English speakers, and I’ve seen plenty of students get confused. Your instinct will be to connect it with ‘spirit’ and while it can mean that, it’s important for your first thought to be ‘mind’.

pas vrai ?✨ = right ? There are a few other versions a French speaker may throw in there instead, you can find them in a previous dialogue note here➹.

à aller de l'avant = to move forward, to make progress.“Nous sommes déterminés à aller de l'avant, ensemble” (We are determined to move forward together)
