A former Toronto city councilor, Jack Layton would become the leader of the federal NDP in 2003. In every subsequent election, he helped the party gain more seats until it became the Official Opposition in 2011. Sadly, he would die only months later from cancer. He remains one of the most popular politicians in recent memory.

With a strong family lineage, Michael Ignatieff was a rising star in the Liberal Party in the late-1960s. Bill Graham was the Liberal Leader of the Opposition to not serve as Prime Minister since 1919. He would spend 14 years in Parliament, including as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence. As well, he was one of the first MPs to come out in support of same-sex marriage.
