Jay and Ken speak with Karl Gollan, former superstar men's pitcher, about his years dominating international competition with the New Zealand Black Sox, how he got into coaching, his years as a collegiate pitching coach (including stints with the University of Iowa and at Utah), and his current position developing pitchers for the Iowa Premier Fastpitch organization. He also shares what he learned in his first coaching job with the Black Sox, why generating energy in pitching is only part of the battle, what he thinks of the current obsession with data, how he uses that data to help pitchers, his opinion on the screwball, and much more. Chris Berry, head coach at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, joins Jay and Ken talk about his early career playing baseball, how he came to McLennan as a baseball assistant coach, why and when he was asked to take over the softball program, and how he has built that program into a perennial national powerhouse over the last decade. He also shares his views on the value of strength training, some of the differences between coaching female versus male players, why playing at the JUCO level instead of taking any old 4-year college offer is betting on yourself, and much more!

This week Jay and Ken welcome University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire head coach Leslie Huntington to the From the Coach's Mouth studio to talk about her days competing for collegiate national titles in softball AND basketball, her coaching journey, and what has kept her at Eau Claire for 26 seasons. Coach Huntington also shares why players don't have to be BFFs off the field to play well on it, why fair doesn't mean equal, what she looks for in recruits, how you have to love to grind because there's no instant gratification in softball, and why players looking to play competitive softball in college should consider a D3 school.

We have a special treat this week as Hallie Blackney, head coach at Missouri Southern State University, and one of her star players, Bailey Dillon, join Jay and Ken to talk about what makes the culture at MSSU so great, why they love the D2 level, and how changes like the transfer portal and 5 for 5 rules are affecting recruiting. They also share their views on the D1 or bust mentality (and why playing college softball at any level is special), how the concept of "Mudita" guides their team approach, how motor preferences have helped guide them to better performance on the field, how athletes write the lineup in practice and more.

Jay and Ken are joined this week by former men's fastpitch player and current Bethany Lutheran College assistant coach John Oothoudt (or Johnny O as most people call him) to talk about his playing days in Minnesota, what it was like growing up in a small town, how he got back into softball coaching through his daughter, and the benefits of being the boss when you're trying to balance a business career as well as coaching. He also shares what he looks for in a recruit, the kinds of players BLC is looking for, his thoughts on the current pitching rules, and how a non-pitcher ended up as a college pitching coach.

This week Jay and Ken go deep on their thoughts on how to take the best advantage of fall ball, including using it to explore what your new players can bring to the table, giving coaches a chance to develop their players instead of playing everyone in the same old positions, giving pitchers the opportunity to try new pitches, and generally discovering what you don't know. We were saddened to learn this week that one of the all-time great pitching coaches and men's pitchers, Rich Balswick, passed away on September 10. Rich was always generous with his time and knowledge, not only with his own students but with other pitching coaches and general coaches who wanted to learn more about fastpitch pitching. Rich will be sorely missed by the entire fastpitch softball community.

USA Softball Region 6 Commissioner Tom Rupert joins Jay and Ken to talk about how he got started as a college coach, why he left the collegiate coaching ranks to become an award-winning high school, and his many years as a high level travel coach in the Indiana Gators organization.
