Fun Facts About Venus

Listen Later

Learn fun facts about Venus, the second planet from the sun. The word of the day in this episode is albedo, which refers to how much light is reflected off a surface. With an albedo of 0.75, Venus has the highest reflectivity of any planet in our solar system, making it the second brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. This brightness is due to its thick, dense atmosphere, which is composed of 96% carbon dioxide and clouds of sulfuric acid. The same atmosphere that makes it so bright also creates a runaway greenhouse effect, resulting in Venus being the hottest planet in our solar system, with a scorching average surface temperature of 870°F (465°C), hot enough to melt lead.

Venus also has a peculiar retrograde rotation, spinning backward compared to most other planets, which means the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. Its rotation is incredibly slow, with a single day on Venus lasting longer than its year. The surface of Venus is a volcanic landscape, with evidence of recent volcanic activity, and the atmospheric pressure is immense, over 90 times that of Earth.
