Walk the walk, if you’re gonna talk the talk!

This episode dives into four historical contributors to American history-all who were mixed race-that were trailblazers in their time. There’s Daisy Nelson Moore, who fought for school integration before Brown v Board of Education. There’s John Anthony Copeland Jr & Lewis Sheridan Leary, one the uncle of the other, who fought in the infamous John Brown’s Harpers Ferry Raid. And finally there is George Washington Bush, who was the first permanent settler in Washington.

If you know any unsung heroes and sheroes in our community that need to be showcased, shoot me a DM on Instagram or send me an email at [email protected] so I can talk about it!

And here are yet more stories on what it means to be multiracial in America, one story at a time, from the studio to the streets!

  • 33 - Forbidden Love
Before Loving v Virginia there were four court cases that challenged anti-miscegenation laws in their own states. Can you name them?

Pace v Alabama (1883) Perez v Sharp (1948) Naim v Naim (1955) and McLaughlin v Florida (1964) all challenged racist legal laws that banned any interracial romantic contact. Two of these four cases won their legal battle.

Was the US the only country that banned interracial marriages, sex, and cohabitation? Let me know in the comments on my Insta post @generationmixedpodcast and my TikTok @GenMixedPodcast

  • 32 - Biracial First
Why do Black firsts not include Biracial firsts? Our history goes back further than we think.

In today’s climate, with the explosive growth of biracial and multiracial people, it is important to accurately tell history. The three Black firsts you may have or have not heard, Alexander Twilight, Nicolas Galbaldan, and Ophelia Devore-Mitchell were instrumental in elevating the Black race, although they were mixed race. Alexander was the first Black higher degree holder in the United States. Nicolas, a phenomenal surfer that is considered one of its giants, despite his early death. And Ophelia, who opened the first black modeling agency that started Cicely Tyson’s and Diahann Carroll’s careers, amongst other accomplishments.

  • 30 - IT DOES Matter if you're Black or White
Take a deep dive into two notorious cases that challenge the societal construct of race. What determines who is white and who is Black?

Susan Guillory Phipps challenged Louisiana law to change her birth certificate to change from “colored” to white back in 1982, which became a media sensation and made history. Rhinelander v Rhinelander was a divorce case in the Roaring 20s that made tabloid headlines that stated the bride passed as white to marry into a white wealthy family. But that was not the true story.

What are your thoughts on Susan Phipp’s choice? Did you agree with the Rhinelander v Rhinelander decision? Let me know by commenting on Insta @generationmixedpodcast

  • 29 - There’s Some Hoes in That House!
The world’s oldest profession has roots in biracial history. Today we learn about Mahogany Hall, Madame Lulu White, and “Countess” Willie Piazza.

Storyville was a red light district in New Orleans between the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century that legalized prosititution. Mixed race women were popular in bordellos, as well as the madames. After 1917, things changed.
