For more than ten years, she lay beneath the floorboards of Hill House. For more than ten years, she waited. Who was she? Who put her there? Why? Harry Starke vows to find the answers to those questions, but to do so he must embark upon an investigation that will put him and those close to him in deadly danger, take him deep into the underground city, the Dark Web, murder, organized crime, prostitution, and human trafficking. One by one, he peels back the layers, and with each one, he sinks a little deeper into the morass, the seamy underbelly of a world few know of, and even fewer want to be a part of. Every Picture Tells a Story, Don't It?
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'm a huge fan of the Harry Starke novels and audio books. I will go out on a limb and declare this to be the best of the series! Thus my favorite, ... so far. I haven't been disappointed in any yet. Plot development, characters that you care about and that are written to show dedication to solving the case.
What did you like best about this story?
The mystery is plausible. You see it in news headlines and tv news broadcasts every few months. Missing and exploited young people.
Which character as performed by Tom Lennon was your favorite?
The story is filled with characters that the listener comes to empathise with. Tom Lennon adds so much to work. An integral positive addition. All the performances, are note worthy in that respect.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Sadness for the victims. Anger at the responsible bad people. Satisfaction for them getting their just desserts.
    Any additional comments?
I get immersed in each of the Harry Starke novels. Tom Lennon IS Harry Starke.
This audiobook was provided by the narrator at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you!
Harry just gets better with each book
The beginning of this book is very atmospheric and just a little bit dark and it hooked me in straight away. Hill House was about to be demolished, some young fellas go in to help themselves to the floorboards hoping to make a bit of money by selling them. A grisly discovery is made. A body is found under the boards. The body has been there for some time and doesn't fit any of the missing persons descriptions.
They find out that the old house was once a shelter for young people, but it's not as simple as tracing the owners. The investigations lead Harry and the police into some very disturbing situations involving some very dark and disturbing people. Yet even these people aren't quite as they seem.
Harry comes up against an old adversary and things get violent, he is upset because his work has put his staff at risk of injury or worse. The way he deals with this particular situation gives us some real hard boiled "Harry Starke" moments, quite hair raising at times.
Harry continues to work well with his former girlfriend the police officer Kate and I really enjoy the way she treats him, as usual, Harrys love life is perplexing him, he continues to get himself into some awkward "romantic" situations.

    Well written page turner
Before I write this review I should note that if I start reading a book and its not grabbing my attention, I will stop reading it. I was pleased that Jagger -Time Served proved itself worthy of my attention. Jagger is a well written page turner with ample twists and turns that grabbed my attention and sucked me in. I found myself stopping at points and analyzing in my mind what I had read so far, trying to make the pieces the fit and put it all together. What seemed, at the time, to have been minute details of the incredibly well developed main character, Jagger, were actually subtle yet memorable hints of things to come. It was those details and the twists and turns that had me, the reader, trying to solve the case on my own. This type of reader-to-book interaction is what sets Jagger - Time Served apart from other crime stories I have read.
Jagger is the author's first book but you wouldn't know that from the mature writing that finds itself on every page. I can't wait for the next book!

Spinning a pause-resisting story of literary suspense that begins in the present and unwinds back more than half a century, this unforgettable debut channels the haunting allure of Atonement as its masterfully woven web of lies, secrets, and betrayals unravels to a shocking conclusion.
Veteran con artist Roy spots an obvious easy mark when he meets Betty, a wealthy widow, online. In no time at all, he's moved into Betty's lovely cottage and is preparing to accompany her on a romantic trip to Europe. Dancing across almost a century, decades that encompass unthinkable cruelty, extraordinary resilience, and remarkable kindness, The Good Liar is an epic narrative of sin, salvation, and survival - and for Roy and Betty, there is a reckoning to be made when the endgame of Roy's crooked plot plays out.

The Good Liar: A great novel
By the time I was done reading ( 2nd day), I really enjoyed this book. It started a little slow. Those looking for a fast pace thriller may be disappointed.
I would described this book as a historical, psychological novel with twists. For a first novel, I found the plot and development of same to be very sophisticated. More than any page turner I have read recently I find myself reflecting on the manner in which the author developed the 2 main characters, providing insight into the eventual outcome. I almost fell out of my chair when I figured it out ( well before the end ). Wow!
I was never one for English class - but I would love to write the Clifotes version for this.
    Slow Slog With Unlikable People
I had several difficulties with The Good Liar which resulted in my not enjoying the book at all. My first issue was one of my own making. When I read the publisherâs blurb that it was a con vs. con book, I assumed incorrectly that it was a clever, fast moving witty novel such as the kind Cannell used to write before his demise King Con. I couldnât have been more wrong. This is a low energy drag of a book which moves in fits and starts from scene to scene.
The writing was my second beef. The author infuriatingly uses the passive voice so often that I had no idea what was going on time after time so I had to break from my suspension of disbelief to try and put together how we got where we were. For example, in the first few pages of the book, two elderly folks meet on an Internet blind date which goes all right. The next chapter opens with them having lived together for two months. Nothing intervening and no reason given for the transition nor does it make any sense. They seem to be almost roommates. He gets up every AM early, relieves himself on the floor because he canât hit the commode. She gets disgusted and cleans it up while he returns to bed. They donât speak.
The other part of the writing which bugged me is the use of the present tense for past events. So we get sentences like, "Stephen sits at the table his eyes focused on nothing." for an event which occurred years ago.
The last thing that bothered me was that I found no sympathetic or realistic character. They are all lifeless, dreary low energy residents of a failed empire.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The thrilling first installment in Pulitzer Prize - winning author John P. Marquand's classic espionage series featuring Imperial Japan's most skillful spy. Capitalizing on his heroic career as a World War I flying ace, Casey Lee agrees to pilot a plane across the Pacific as a publicity stunt for an American tobacco company. But his future as a goodwill ambassador between East and West takes a nosedive when the flight is abruptly canceled. Stranded in Tokyo, his bank account rapidly dwindling, Casey is approached by Mr. Moto, a secret agent with a job to offer. The work entails a matter of grave international importance - and it pays well. Casey accepts the proposition and boards a steamship bound for Shanghai, where his mission will begin. His fellow passengers include Mr. Moto and Sonya, a beautiful exile from White Russia with her own private agenda. When a Chinese man turns up dead in Casey's stateroom, the trio is caught up in a dangerous game of intrigue and deceit, the outcome of which might just determine the fate of their nations. First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, John P. Marquand's popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels were the inspiration for eight films starring Peter Lorre.
    Members Reviews:
The book had him as very smart and appealing character
In some ways unexpected since the movie character was always on the side of "good" and was a stereo typed oriental. The book had him as very smart and appealing character, non-stereo typed oriental. Story was good, but occasionally became too predictable.
A suspenseful and enjoyable spy story
This is the first Mr. Moto spy novel by John P. Marquand. It was published in 1935, prior to World War II and anticipates the future war between Japan and the US. I described the six Mr. Moto novels and their author John P. Marquand in my review of âMr. Moto: Four Complete Novels,â and readers may want to read what I wrote there. Among much else, I pointed out that the movies about Mr. Moto generally portray the Japanese gentleman in a favorable light, while the novels, as this one shows him to be quite ruthless.
This story takes place in Japan and China when Mr. Moto was working as a high official with plenty of power for the Japanese Emperor attempting to help Japan gain dominance in the world. Japan, at the time, felt threatened by the expansions by the US and Russia.
An American aviator, a hero of World War I, is embittered that he is no longer heralded as a hero and has become a drunk who expresses his hatred for the US openly. Mr. Moto sends a beautiful Russian woman to seduce him to perform an act for Japan, and Moto offers him a bribe which the aviator accepts. Neither the aviator nor the reader knows at the beginning what exactly Moto is after and why and who the woman is. While on a ship, a Chinese man enters the aviatorâs cabin and tells him that he has a message that he will give him to take to the US intelligent agent in China. This man is soon thereafter killed. The aviator and Moto do not know where the message is.

Gritty Crime Drama With A Mythic Prize
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
For fans of crime dramas - yes. Others - it may be a bit too gritty in spots. It is also somewhat dated.
What did you like best about this story?
The character development - our protagonist starts out as a naïve country girl and through her own efforts becomes a canny researcher that matches wits with the best of them. Also it kept me guessing...it's him, no it's not, maybe it is, no it's not...
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was ok. However I would argue that a Midwest accent from Ohio does not sound like a Texas accent. That was kind of distracting.
Could you see Quest being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not sure. The pictures in my mind don't look like any actors I know.
    Any additional comments?
Although not stated anywhere, this book takes place somewhere in the 70's or early 80's at latest. Characters are veterans of World War II and still pretty spry. Also references to flying on the Concorde to Europe push back it's date a bit. Not terribly distracting, but I had gone into this expecting a current time line.
    Beautifully performed
I really enjoyed this mystery. It grabbed me from the beginning and rarely lost me. There's a great mixture of history and fiction in this book. My only criticism is that it relies too heavily on well-worn stereotypes for the main characters. The reader's voice is wonderful. She deftly created various accents for the many characters and I never tired of listening to her. In fact, I will purchase other books she has narrated, just to listen to her voice!
    Not too bad
It was not a too bad performance. Unfortunately for the performer she continually mispronounced English names, and places.

    Members Reviews:
You'll be full of sorrows if you buy this book.
What would have made A Man of Sorrows better?
The synopsis made the book sound interesting but the plot was ludicrous. Carlyle, the central character, is supposed to be a hard-boiled detective. Carlyle's average day consists of aggravating his superiors, effing and jeffing at the various crimes and popping into cafes for green tea.
What could James Craig have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This could have been so much better. Needs a tighter story line, more plausible characters and crimes.
How could the performance have been better?
Narration was best feature of this book.
What character would you cut from A Man of Sorrows?
The most pointless character was the female executive who kept a nude photo of herself on the office wall.
    Any additional comments?
Will be steering clear of this author's books from now on.
Another great book in this series.
This is yet another great book in this series with well rounded characters, a decent storyline and good narration. Highly recommended.

    Title: Cop Job
Subtitle: The Sam Acquillo Hamptons, Book 6

    Narrator: Keith Szarabajka
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-30-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
It's bad enough when someone you know is brutally murdered; it's worse when the guy was a paranoid schizophrenic helplessly bound to a wheelchair. Sam Acquillo and Jackie Swaitkowski tried to look after Alfie Aldergreen, as had others around the Village of Southampton, but now they were forced to wonder what else they could have done. One thing is for certain: Alfie's killers are about to know what it means to murder a friend of Sam - former corporate troubleshooter, former professional boxer, and all-around ornery bulldog - and Jackie, a defense lawyer often described as an avenging angel.
This sixth installment in the Sam Acquillo Hamptons mystery series brings back Knopf's ensemble of famously eccentric and involving characters, not the least of which is Sam's mutt, Eddie Van Halen. Not just a crime story, it examines the fraught intersection of wealth, culture, politics, and the ravages of an ugly war. Combining beautiful watery settings with a unique look into the underbelly of the Hamptons, it's a mystery you won't find anywhere else.
    Members Reviews:
    Welcome Back Sam
Be advised: Sam Acquillo is one of my favorite fictional characters - and the folks that people his Hamptons universe feel like neighbors. So, it's going to be hard for me to write a critically objective review here. My main gripe is that 4 years between Acquillo adventures is far too long and I'm hoping that Chris Knopf doesn't make us wait quite so long for the next installment.
As in the five, previous Acquillo novels, Knopf delivers an intelligent plot, interesting character interactions, a great sense of place and detail and a smart, logical conclusion.
As for the narration, I thought Mr. Szarabajka might have overcooked some of the New York accents a bit, but I'm just so happy to have a new Acquillo adventure, I'm not going to let that little quibble dampen my joy or enthusiasm.
    Great Series
Keith Szarabajka has vastly improved on his style over his reading of "Black Swan". I say reading because that is exactly what it sounded like to me, in "Black Swan". The characters all sounded alike, and he sounded like he was reading the book, not performing as a voice actor. He sounds much more comfortable with the characters in "Cop Job". Overall, it's a great series. Love it.

    THE TETHER:
    I'M NOT TECHNOLOGY
    Members Reviews:
I really wanted to like this book
The Phone Company has all the makings of a great audiobook: timely topic, engaging characters and great reader. But, it failed to live up to its potential on so many levels. There were a lot of places in the book that I was just scratching my head wondering if I missed a chapter or 2. The author also brings up things for no reason that don't go anywhere. There was one really good story line that got went nowhere: the app that updated to the past. It could have been used at the end to make a happy ending. But instead, the book was just over. Other authors have used that tactic successfully, this ending was just disappointing.
    Not my cup of tea!
I couldn't finish it. I get it technology is bad, it's invasive, it's unhealthy, it can change everything, but do you have to take like the first 25 chapters telling me that! I really tried I gave it every chance but I just couldn't get through it! if I could I want my money back that's how much I didn't like it.
Technology can be scary and this book confirms it!
The Phone Company by David Jacob Knight is a book that's unlike any other. This book for me is a wake up call on how much we rely on technology.
It's scary when you start to think how technology is taking over the world especially with mobile phones everyone has one and probably looks at it every few minutes to check out the latest game, social media or listen to music etc. There's an app for absolutely everything.
This is the story of one man who refuses to move with the times in regards with the latest mobile phone and refuses to change to the new phone provider. Those who do change over find themselves being taken over by the phone company.
It took me a while to get into this book but once I did I enjoyed it until about 3/4 of the way in. I felt that it took a very strange turn one that questioned should I keep reading, which I did to find out what happens in the end. The only thing that kept my interest when I found it hard was the narrator Roberto Scarlato.

    Publisher's Summary:
When an old man is found dead on the road - seemingly run over by a Hungarian au pair - police investigator Anna Fekete is certain that there is more to the incident than meets the eye. As she begins to unravel an increasingly complex case, shes led on a deadly trail where illegal immigration, drugs and ultimately murder threaten not only her beliefs but her life.
Annas partner, Esko, is entrenched in a separate but equally dangerous investigation into the activities of an immigrant gang, where deportation orders and raids cause increasing tension and result in desperate measures by gang members - and the police themselves.
Then a bloody knife is found in the snow, and the two cases come together in ways that no one could have predicted. As pressure mounts, it becomes clear that having the law on their side may not be enough for Anna and Esko.
Chilling, disturbing and terrifyingly believable, The Defenceless is an extraordinary, vivid and gripping thriller by one of the most exciting new voices in crime fiction.
Kati Hiekkapelto is a best-selling, award winning author, punk singer, performance artist and, formerly, special-needs teacher. She lives on an old farm (which has been in her family for hundreds of years) on the island of Hailuoto in Northern Finland with her children and sizable menagerie. Here she is currently setting up an asylum for artists in danger.
Hiekkapelto has taught immigrants and lived in the Hungarian region of Serbia, which inspired her to write her highly regarded debut crime novel, The Hummingbird.
    Critic Reviews:
"Its like reading Henning Mankell, when Senior Constable Anna Fekete works on several tricky cases in the icy-cold winter of Northern Finland while contemplating the harshness of life." (Helsingin Sanomat)
"As the plot keeps deepening, Hiekkapelto turns out to be incredibly skilful at carrying off a complicated story...the suspense feels real and the writing flows nicely." (Savon Sanomat)
"Hiekkapelto really treats her readers like royalty. The plot - with all its twists, its humorous yet wise narration - guarantees a perfect reading experience. Im sorry for the superlatives, but I believe The Defenceless is the Book of the Year for me." (Literary Blog, Rakkaudesta Kirjoihin)

A good read for those with milder tastes
This book was pretty good, but a little bit on the boring side. There were interesting elements but none of them really came together or were explored in depth. The several different threads of the investigation never crossed and were, frankly, slightly unbelievable. More than that just seem like a good book for an older person who didn't want to read anything to dark bloody or full of sex. A "lovely British mystery"
    set in Finland.
Scintillating delivery of an outstanding story!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Defenceless to be better than the print version?
Before listening to The Defenceless I had previously read the book and enjoyed it immensely. Undoubtedly it was one of my favourite reads of 2015 and as well as being a hugely timely and relevant novel it was also a remarkably profound insight into the life of migrants. To my mind, Kati Hiekkapelto is the finest exponent of urban noir and this gritty storyline packs a very weighty punch.
